My grandmother passed away (去世) at the age of 90. My mother and I went to her home and looked     1    . It was the house where so many     2     lived… feeding birds in the backyard, sitting on the grass, playing cards and drinking lemonade. In the weeks and months     3     she died, it was so hard to be in the house without her. She’d lived a very     4     life and hadn’t left much behind. We weren’t looking for money or     5     valuable.

In the living room, I saw grandma’s rocking chair. For as long as I could     6    , she’d sit in that chair, knitting (编织) things and watching TV. I thought for a(n)     7     about taking it home with me. But it was far too     8     for my living room. Then my mom came in and     9     at the same chair. “Ah, it’s Mom’s rocking chair. You know, when I was a newborn, your grandmother would nurse me and put me to     10     while rocking (摇晃 ) in that chair. And when you were born, I     11     the same with you,” she said.

I had no     12     about the chair’s history. For years, it stayed in our family and helped my mother and my grandmother as they faced the     13     of being a new mother. My husband and I had been talking about having a child of     14     own…

“I     15     I’ll take the chair home with me, if you don’t mind.” I said to my mother. “Not at all,” she replied, with a knowing look in her eye.

It was a cold, dark, November morning several years ago. My alarm clock had just gone off but I was having     16     getting out of bed. My dad had died a few weeks before and I found myself just going through a range of feelings. I felt     17     and hopeless. I didn’t feel ready to go on without him.

He had worked so hard all of his life to provide for us. He got     18     easily and would sometimes shout at me and my brothers, but he also had a kind and gentle     19     that he would share with us. I always knew that he loved us. Still, he had been raised in an old-fashioned way and     20     us in that way too. I couldn’t remember, for example, ever being hugged by him after I reached a certain age.

When my dad got old, I often visited     21     in the afternoons and just talked with him about life. But we still hardly touched and     22     hugged. At last, his own     23     began to quickly fail and within a few months brain cancer (癌症) had taken him from us. I remember thinking what I haven’t had was just one     24     hug from him.

I sighed (叹气) and got out of my bed. I turned on the lights. I saw my son, Jay, walking down the hall to meet me.     25    , he opened his arms and gave me a huge, heartfelt hug.     26     he gave me a hug, I heard my dad’s voice deep inside of me say, “Joey, this hug is from me!” At the same time, I cried and smiled. At that moment, in the place where heart, mind, and spirit all     27    , I felt the love from Dad. And I knew that I couldn’t     28     my life. I still had a lot of things left to do and a lot of love left to     29    .

Life here can seem very long but in truth it is very     30    . Never miss an opportunity to love. And always keep your heart and your arms open for a hug!
