Passage1
Don Powell was pulling a mountain of envelopes from the letterbox outside his home in Orchard Lake Village, Michigan, when he noticed something strange: a tiny doll couple were sitting inside. A small note read, “________.” It was signed from Mary and Shelley.
He and his wife Nancy had a unique letterbox installed about four years ago. It has many windows on the top and sides to let the light in. The inside is roomy, measuring 66 centimetres long, 38 centimetres wide and 25 centimetres high. It even has lights so that it is bright at night.
“We could understand why dolls would want to move into such a nice mailbox, but we had no idea where they came from,” Don says. “I asked the neighbours whether anybody had left dolls in their mailboxes, and everyone told me no. So I thought, ‘This must just be a joke, and whoever left them here will come back to get them.’”
A few days passed. Don and Nancy discovered the small couple had got a table, a bed and a pair of roller skates.
“I also have a sense of humour, so I left a note of my own, saying that what the home really needed was a refrigerator full of food,” he says.
The fridge was never delivered. But over the next several months, more things mysteriously showed up: a cooker, a dishwasher and a painting, to name a few.
More than a year later, Mary and Shelley were still living rent-free in the letterbox, to the delight of neighbours who now follow Don’s updates on Orchard Lake Village’s Nextdoor page. Don first posted about the tiny couple on August 21, 2022, hoping that might help solve the mystery.
“A homeless couple has lived inside our mailbox. I have included photos of what it all looks like, so you don’t think I’m making any of this up,” he wrote on Nextdoor.
The Powells’ next-door neighbour, Terry Falahee, says he believes that Don did not move the dolls into the letterbox himself. It’s just somebody out there who is having some fun, giving us all a little community humour.
Every month or two, particularly around holidays, the Powells find something new inside the box for Mary and Shelley. For Halloween 2022, the couple was given a pumpkin lantern, and at Christmas, a decorated tree was left with tiny presents.
“It’s getting a little crowded, especially because their cousin Shirley has also moved in, along with a service dog named Maggie,” Don says.
Don recently added a miniature letterbox since the family is getting more and more tiny letters from the community.

It was a cold winter afternoon before Christmas. My parents and I sat on the bench in Washington, Union Station, waiting for the train. There were many people inside the waiting hall. A boy sat nearby. His worn jacket, pale face, dirty hands all seemed to tell me that he was homeless. “He must be cold and hungry. Maybe I should help him,” I said to myself.
Just at that moment, a well-dressed young couple (夫妇) walked towards him. “Excuse me,” the man said. “My wife and I bought two meal boxes but one was enough for us. We hate to waste good food. Can you help us out and put this to use?” He gave the boy a meal box.
The boy thanked them and opened the box with joy and care. Suddenly he stopped. In the direction (方向) to which he looked, I saw an old man in rags (衣衫褴褛的)—in a worn sweater, worn trousers and open shoes, entering the hall.
Putting the meal box aside, the boy stood up and helped the old man to his seat. He took off his jacket and covered it over the old man’s shoulders, saying, “A gentleman brought me this warm meal but I just finished eating. I hate to waste good food. Can you help me out?” He put the still-warm meal box in the old man’s hands without waiting for an answer.
“Sure, son, but if only you offer that sandwich to me. It’s too much for a man at my age.” We were all touched (受感动的). Dad went away and soon returned with cups of hot chocolate and a big pizza. Mum and Dad went up to those in rags, “Excuse me.”

Passage4
.Tom ran back towards the house and grabbed the hose (输水软管). It was next to the back door. He quickly turned on the tap.
“I must reach the shed,” Tom shouted as he pulled the hose in the direction of the shed.
But at that moment the shed caught fire. There was smoke everywhere, and the fire was getting bigger. Tom felt sick. Just then a fire engine came racing up the road and a team of firemen ran into the garden. The firemen managed to put out the fire very quickly and carry Tom to safety. Mrs Bonnet’s emergency call to the fire station saved Tom. But Tom only knew this on the following day because he fainted with all the smoke.
Tom woke up in hospital. His mum and dad were next to him. He felt strange.
“What happened?” he asked.
“You were very lucky, Tom.” answered his father. He was very upset.
“How are you, Tom? Are you feeling OK?” asked his mum, she had tears in her eyes.
“I feel sick,” he said.
“This must stop, now! ” said his father angrily.
Once again the police didn’t have a person who saw what happened but this time there was some evidence (证据). The firemen found a lighter on the ground and a bottle of alcohol (酒精) tied to Tom’s bike.
Now all they had to do was to find the owners.
Tom got out of hospital the next day. He decided to teach the bullies (霸凌者) a lesson. He told Tara and Ziggy about his plan, then they told Tom’s parents. This time they created a real network: Tom, Tara and Ziggy’s parents, the school leaders, the police and, of course, the Anti-bully Squad (反霸凌小队). They all wanted to stop the bullies for good.
