①Have you ever visited any traditional Chinese gardens? They look more like natural sights than some Western gardens. They have a long history. In the past, there were two main types of gardens: imperial (皇家的)gardens and private (私人的) gardens. Imperial gardens were for the use of the emperor and his family. Private gardens were built by important officials or wealthy businessmen. Both types of gardens were mainly built for hunting and resting.

②The Summer Palace in Beijing is China’s most famous imperial garden. It covers an area of about 3,000,000 m2. Kunming Lake takes up almost three-fourths of the garden’s total area. There are over 3,000 ancient buildings and a large number of plants in the garden. You can also see more than 40,000 valuable works from each ancient period. With such a rich collection, the garden is known as the “Imperial Garden Museum”.

③As for private gardens, the most famous one is the Humble Administrator’s Garden (拙政园) in Suzhou. It has an area of only 52,000 m2. It is quite small compared with imperial gardens, but it’s beautiful. When you are standing in any corner of the garden, it all looks like a lifelike picture. And the whole garden looks different in different seasons.

④The traditional Chinese gardens have been designed to look naturally formed. Mountains and waters, trees and flowers, houses and towers are well-organized. They don’t look crowded together at all. In fact, Chinese gardens are in some ways much like traditional Chinese landscape paintings. The two have influenced and developed alongside one another. Have you ever tried Chinese chess, which is also called Xianggi in China? It is a famous two-player game with a long history of more than 2,000 years. The game is not only fun but also shows Chinese ways of thinking, each player has l6 pieces in either red or black, just like two armies fighting each other.

The chessboard (棋盘) of Chinese chess is special. It has nine lines across and ten lines up and down, with a river in the middle. The river stops some pieces, like the elephant, which cannot cross it. To play Chinese chess well, you don’t have to communicate (交流) too much with each other. Instead, you need to think carefully before each move because every piece has its own way of moving.

The horse moves in an “L” shape, but if any other piece is in its way, it can’t move forward. The chariot (车) moves straight, and the cannon (炮) can jump over one piece to take another. The soldiers (兵) can only move one step each time and can walk to the left or the right after crossing the river. The guards (士) protect the King inside the palace. To win the game, you have to carefully plan your moves, protect your pieces and try to catch the other’s pieces. If the King is caught, the game is over. The key is to catch the other player’s King, the most important piece.

Today, Chinese chess is famous not only in China but also in many other countries. Many people enjoy playing it because it helps them think better and solve (解决) problems. You can find people playing Chinese chess in parks or online. It is a game that is both fun and meaningful for all ages.

参考答案

1. D

【详解】句意:——约翰,你觉得我们的数学老师怎么样?——我很喜欢他的课。他经常让我们分享关于问题的不同看法。

考查动词辨析。support支持;choose选择;design设计;share分享。根据“He often asks us to ... different ideas about questions.”
