专题07 阅读理解说明文

主题01 人与社会——科学技术

Passage1

Nobody wants to buy an expensive telescope and then aimlessly scan the stars trying to find an object. Help is needed. Thankfully, there is an app for that.

Celestron is a leader in the world of telescopes and its StarSense Explorer app and dock (底座) have been designed to run on the StarSense Explorer telescopes. The free StarSense Explorer app (compatible with iOS and Android) uses information based on your exact location and time to tell you which stars or planets can be seen in the night sky (cloud-dependent, of course).

Mount the phone into the StarSense Explorer dock attached to the telescope and choose your observation target (目标). A bracket (支架) will hold the phone over a mirror on the dock so that star patterns can reflect off the mirror and into the phone’s camera. StarSense Explorer processes (处理) the information and your telescope will find your target.

As well as locating your target StarSense Explorer holds detailed information about your chosen object. Listen to an audio presentation while you observe, or read the available data. The StarSense Explorer app will even give you observing tips on how to get the best view.

StarSense Explorer is the only astronomy app to use plate solving technology to find its target and it claims a typical pointing accuracy (目标指示精度) of as little as 0.25°. Used by professional observatories, and even orbiting satellites, plate solving is the process of extracting (提取) star pattern data in images and matching the star pattern within the image to its inside database (数据库) to work out a telescope’s pointing position. StarSense Explorer uses the smartphone’s camera as its “eye” and the phone’s processing power as its “brain”.

Plate solving would normally require specialised technology, such as sensitive imaging camera, lens and astronomical software, all at great cost. The StarSense Explorer app is free and compatible with StarSense Explorer telescopes, starting from £189.99.

If you’re ready to take a deeper dive into astronomy, Celestron’s StarSense Explorer technology will make a fine companion. You can discover more about StarSense Explorer technology at wwwcelestroncom

Catch up with Celestron at the New Science Live show between 12-14 October to learn more about StarSense Explorer. You will find the research team at stand i34.

Drones are a kind of machine that can fly. They’re becoming more and more popular and are widely used in many areas. People use a computer to control this flying machine. Drones can do many things for us, like carrying things, taking pictures, and following animals that are in danger. Some people say this special machine will change our life as much as the computer does.

In Brazil, farmers use drones to watch their crops. Brazil has quite a few large farms. On these farms, people find it difficult to look after all the crops. Drones can help farmers to find out if the crops are ill. They also help farmers use fewer farm chemicals. This can help the environment and save much money.

Drones can also help to find lost people. If people are lost, who are far from home, police can use drones to find them. A 92-year-old man in Virginia was lost and had to spend a night in the woods. Luckily, the drone found him in 20 minutes. He was finally saved by the police.

Drones can even serve people coffee. US company IBM has made this kind of drone. It can carry coffee to those in need. The drone can know when to bring a cup of coffee by studying a person’s habits. one piece of colored paper

five ribbons (丝带)

strong tape

a string

②As readers, especially those reading in a second language, we need to deal with the text as if we were detectives (侦探), the first thing to do when meeting a new and difficult word is to judge the situation, to look at everything that is known and see if it helps us to understand what it means.
