专题06阅读理解之记叙文20

One day, Zhou Yu ordered Zhuge Liang to make 100,000 arrows in ten days. Zhou Yu thought it was impossible, but Zhuge Liang said, “Give me three days.” Then he asked Lu Su to lend him 20 boats, and the soldiers put some scarecrows in line on the boats. He asked Lu Su not to tell Zhou Yu what was happening.

When Lu Su came again to see Zhuge Liang, he found nothing unusual. Nothing happened on the second day, either. In the small hours of the third day, Zhuge Liang invited Lu Su for a boat ride. The 20 boats were tied together with strong ropes. Zhuge’s boats went towards the camp of Cao Cao. The river was covered with thick mist (雾) all over. People could not see each other on the river. When Zhuge’s boats got close to the Cao camp before dawn (黎明), Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to shout and beat drums heavily. But Zhuge and Lu Su only sat inside one boat drinking wine to enjoy themselves.

As soon as the Cao camp heard the shouting and drum beating, they thought it was a surprise attack (攻击) by the Zhou Yu camp. Since they could see nobody on the river, they had to order 3,000 soldiers to shoot arrows to stop the attack. The front of the scarecrows was quickly full of arrows. After a while, Zhuge Liang had his boats turned around to get the other side of the scarecrows to face the Cao camp. When both sides were full of arrows, the day broke. Zhuge Liang ordered his soldiers to return. The soldiers shouted in excitement, “Thank you, Cao Cao, for your arrows.” After they got back to their camp, they collected more than 100,000 arrows in total from the scarecrows.

One morning, as Mary was skipping(蹦跳)slowly along the long path, she heard the sound of music. She was very curious and went to find out.

A boy was sitting under a tree. He was playing music. He had blue eyes and red cheeks. A squirrel and two rabbits were watching him and listening to the music. When he saw Mary, he said, “I’m Dickon. I know who you are. You are Miss Mary.”

He took out a package.

“Here are the garden tools. I bought some packets of seeds, too.”

“If you like,” Dickon said, “I can plant them for you. Where’s your garden?”

“Can you keep a secret?” she said.

“I keep secrets all the time,” Dickon laughed.

I stole a garden,” Mary said quickly. “Nobody wants it. Perhaps everything is dead in it already. I don’t know.”

She began to cry.

“Where is it? asked Dickon.”

“Come with me,” she said.

She took him along the path to the wall with the ivy(常春藤)on it. Then she unlocked the door and they went in together.

“Here it is,” she said. “It’s a secret garden.”

Dickon’s blue eyes opened wide in surprise as he looked at the garden.

“It’s very pretty,” he whispered. “It’s like being in a dream. In the spring there are going to be lots of birds’ nests here.”

“Are the roses alive or dead?” Mary asked him.

He went up to an old tree and pointed at the branch(树枝). It was dry and grey but there was a small green bit on it.

“This bit’s alive,” he explained. “But there’s a lot of old wood that is dead. We must cut it off. There are going to be lots of roses here this summer.”

They went from bush to bush and from tree to tree. He was very strong and clever with his knife. He knew how to cut off the dry and dead wood.

“There’s a lot of work to do here,” he said.

“Can you come again and help me?” Mary asked him. “Please, Dickon!”

“Yes, every day if you like,” he answered.

“Please, please don’t tell anyone about the secret garden, Dickon,” she said.

“Of course not,” answered Dickon. “It’s our secret.”

Whether it be a person, an animal, or even an insect, a mother’s instincts (本能) are never wrong. This idea rings true for a mother cat who acted fast and sought out help when her kittens were in trouble. This mother cat’s quick thinking may have just saved her babies.

In the urban district of Izmir in western Turkey, a cat walked into a regular hospital holding a kitten in her mouth. As the mother cat moved through the hospital, people were surprised to see such a sight, but let her pass. The mother cat asked for help, crying for a long time. She was familiar to the hospital staff, who had been leaving her food and water outside, but they didn’t realize that she had given birth to kittens.

The mother cat was worried about her young because they weren’t able to open their eyes. After the doctors looked at the kittens, they noticed that they were suffering from eye infections. One of the doctors recalls, “We contacted vets and gave medicine as described. When the kittens opened their eyes a short time later, we were excited.” Later, they were sent to an animal hospital for further care. The cats are now up for adoption and will hopefully find loving forever homes.

When it comes to mother cats and kittens, kittens completely depend on mothers for the first few months of their lives. Because they are blind and almost deaf until about two or three weeks old, the mother cat must protect them from any possible danger. Without the mother cat’s help, the kittens may not survive.

As shown by the mother cat in Turkey, a mother’s love and protection knows no bounds. Whether the mom is a human or a cat, mothers will always look out for their babies and make sure they are safe and healthy.

12.What’s the best title of the story?

A.A cat has nine lives                              B.Any help means a lot

C.Mother cat is so brave                          D.Mother’s love is boundless

The moment that Jiang Mengnan received the Touching China Person of the Year Award for 2021, she said she most wanted to express her thanks to her parents. Born in 1992 in Hunan Province, Jiang’s world has been silent since she was 6 months old when medicine damaged her hearing. So, Jiang’s parents, both middle school teachers, taught her to learn to speak and understand lip reading.

Jiang put her hands on the throats of her parents when they talked and felt the vibration (震动) of the vocal cords to learn to speak. When reading Pinyin, she carefully looked at the lips of other people’s pronunciations (发音) to know the formation of each syllable. Mastering a single word can take at least 1,000 tries for Jiang, and different people’s mouth movements added difficulty to her social communication when it came to lip reading.

Through lip reading and self-study, she was able to keep up with learning and was accepted by Jilin University School of Pharmacy (药剂学) with a high score of 615 on the college entrance examination. In 2018, she was accepted as a PhD at Tsinghua University’s School of Life Sciences. Jiang’s story is one of victory over difficulties. CAN YOU COOK?

This teenager can—and his mum’s very happy with him.

Tom is like any other teenager. He goes to school, does his homework, meets his friends and enjoys doing sports.

But between 5: 30 and 6: 30 from Monday to Friday, Tom does something different. He cooks dinner for all the family: mum, dad, younger brother Joe and older sister Emma.

“I think it’s important for teenagers to learn how to cook. Maths and English are important, of course, but they need other skills too to help them in today’s world. First I taught Tom how to cook easy meals like pizza or egg and chips. Then he started using recipes in my cookery books. Yesterday he made vegetable soup. It was very good!” Tom’s mum said.

“I love cooking and I think I’m really good at it. None of my friends can cook. I don’t know why. It isn’t difficult and it’s great fun!” Tom said.

In the past, Tom didn’t help out at home and his mum wasn’t very happy with him. Today, things are different and she is very happy.
