Young girls learn how to negotiate in a classroom at Carnegie Mellon University.
Learning to make deals
On a hot day in August, several 12- and 13-year-old girls sat in a classroom in Carnegie Mellon University (CMU) ( 卡耐基梅隆大学 ), Pennsylvania ( 宾夕法尼亚州 ), US. They were taking a class called “ Speak Up ”.
This class was a part of the program for Research and Outreach on Gender Equity in Society ( 社会性别平等的研究和推广 ).
The program teaches young girls negotiation( 谈判 ) skills in order to shorten the salary gap ( 薪资差距 ) ) between men and women.
According to a study in the Harvard Business Review ( 哈佛商业评论 ), women are paid 10 to 20 percent less than men to do the same job in the US.
If a woman doesn’t fight to better negotiate her salary, she will lose over $650,000 ( 4,650,000 yuan ) over 45 years.
In the “Speak Up” class, the teacher used role-playing to show students how to negotiate. Volunteers were asked to play a teenage girl who asks her mom for a new cellphone. The teacher then told the students to think about what they could do in return. Olivia Battle, 12, said she would work harder in school, do more housework and save up her pocket money. She talked her “ mother ” into buying her a new cellphone.
Negotiation plays an important role in our lives. Katterin White, an assistant director (主任助理) at CMU, said she has used negotiation at work. She also asked for more money from her university when she was still studying, which made her courses more affordable (付得起的).

Day Three
Building a new capital
In English-language news, when you read about “ relations (关系) between Beijing and Washington ”, it actually means “ relations between China and the US ”. That’s how important capital cities are – they stand for the country.
The capital city has many roles. It is home to the central govermnent( 政府 ). Importaut leaders ( 领导人 ) of the country live and work there. It is also a center for cultural and economic ( 经济的) activities. People go to the capital to communicate and travel.
Because of these roles, capital cities usually have large populations. However, this can be a big problem.
In August, Indonesia said that it will build a new capital on the island of Borneo. One of the reasons for this is that Jakarta, the current ( 现在的 ) capital, is overpopulated ( 人口过多的 ). In Jakarta, the traffic is heavy. The areas people live in are crowded. The environment is poor.
What’s worse, the city is sinking into the sea, as people are using too much groundwater.
Last century, Rio de Janeiro, the then capital of Brazil, was overpopulated as well. In 1960, the country moved its capital to Brasilia to solve this problem. People believed that if they moved the capital to a less-developed ( 欠发达的 ) city, Brazil would have more balanced development ( 发展 ). This turned out to be right.
