Reshi completed a 12-page children’s book, Alice and Sparkle, with the help of a chatbot called ChatGPT. A chatbot is a computer program that uses artificial intelligence (AI) to imitate human thinking and writing. The book’s text was produced using it, and Reshi created illustrations (插图) using another AI program, Midjourney, which uses special computation (计算) rules to translate words into images.
When Reshi posted the book online, it became very popular with children. Some people praised Reshi for being clever. However, not everyone was happy. Some artists criticized the book. They said the pictures were of poor quality, and more importantly, the way the pictures were made was a big problem.
Midjourney works by searching through millions of images on the internet. It uses algorithms to find patterns in these images and make new ones. The problem is, Midjourney takes images from artists’ work without asking for permission.
Some companies have already started using AI instead of human workers. For example, an AI robot told jokes at a comedy club instead of a person. The San Francisco Ballet also used AI-created images for advertising a ballet show called The Nutcracker.
Many artists and writers are worried about their jobs. They fear that if AI can create art and writing for less money, people may not pay them for their work.
Josephine, a journalist who makes money from writing, says, “I love writing, but it’s troubling to see people looking for cheaper choices instead of supporting real human writers.”
There is a real concern about protecting the work of artists and writers who could have their creations used by AI programs. The technology industry that develops these tools should involve artists in the process of making them.

From voluntarily collecting historical materials related to the Great Wall in his Shanxi hometown in Province to becoming an official cultural heritage protector, Yuan Xuerui has spent over twenty years safeguarding the ancient wonder.
China’s Great Wall is one of the great wonders of the world and also a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Built from 3 BC to the 1800s on the north of the country, the Great Wall has a total length of more than 20,000 kilometers.
Yuan, 55, was born in Qingxibao at the foot of the ancient wall in Shanxi’s Daixian county, which is part of the city of Xinzhou. His love for the ancient wall motivated (激励) him to protect it, and when not engaged (从事) in farm work, he spent most of his time walking along the wall to collect bricks that had fallen off due to the long time and prepare for repairs. “What others think as a difficult and dull task of cultural heritage protection often brings me unexpected discoveries,” Yuan said.
He officially became a cultural heritage worker in 2018, and since then his duties have expanded from collecting bricks to organizing ancient documents related to the wall to better tell stories about it. As a heritage worker, Yuan has come to understand the meaning of the Great Wall. “Each brick has endured (忍受) the test of time over hundreds of years—in some cases more than a thousand—carrying rich historical memories,” he said.
This summer, Yuan organized a campaign to call for people to collect bricks for the future repair of the wall. Many bricks were taken away from the Great Wall by local villagers to build their houses in the 1960s and 1970s. “As villagers’ awareness of the need to protect the wall has grown, nowadays, when locals find fallen bricks along the Great Wall, they will pick them up,” he said. “If they see garbage, they will also pick it up and throw it into bins.”

I remember once asking the famous painter Elizabeth Murray what she thought of her early works. She told me that a few didn’t quite meet her own mark for what she wanted them to be. One of the works, in fact, so didn’t meet her mark, that she had set it out in the rubbish in her studio, and her neighbor had taken it because she saw its value. At that moment, my view of success and creativity changed. I realized that success is a moment, but what we are always celebrating is creativity and mastery.
I started to understand this when I watched an archer. She first hit a seven ring, and then a nine, and then two tens, and then the next arrow didn’t even hit the target. And I saw that gave her more tenacity (韧性), and she went after it again and again. For three hours this went on. So, success is hitting that ten ring, but mastery is knowing that it means nothing if you can’t do it again and again. Mastery is not just the same as excellence, though. It’s not the same as success, which I see as an event, a moment in time, and a title the world awards you. Mastery is not a commitment (投入) to a goal but to a continuous search. What gets us to push forward more is to value a near win.
Part of the reason that the near win is inbuilt to mastery is because the greater our proficiency (精通), the more clearly we might see that we don’t know all that we thought we did. It’s called the “Dunning-Kruger effect”. The Paris Review got it out of James Baldwin when they asked him, “What do you think increases with knowledge?” and he said, “You learn how little you know.”
Success motivates us, but a near win can push us in an ongoing quest (探索). One of the most vivid examples of this comes when we look at the difference between Olympic silver medalists and bronze medalists after a competition. Thomas Gilovich and his team from Cornell studied this difference and found that the frustration silver medalists feel compared to bronze medalists, who are typically a bit happier to have just not received fourth place and not medaled at all, gives silver medalists a focus on follow-up competition.
The reason the near win driving us forward is because it changes our view of the landscape and puts our goals, which we tend to put at a distance, closer to where we stand. And this is what a near win does. It gets us to focus on what, right now, we plan to do to address that mountain in our sights.
We become, and continue to be, successful, strong and healthy not when we’ve done it all, but when we still have more to do. We build out of the unfinished idea, even if that idea is our former self. This is the dynamic of mastery. Coming close to what you thought you wanted can help you achieve more than you ever dreamed you could. Completion is a goal, but we hope it is never the end.
37.Why does the writer use the example in Paragraph 1?
A.To introduce a change in the opinion. B.To prove the value of creativity in art.
C.To show the result of a wrong judgement. D.To stress the importance of a good neighbor.
38.What do you know about success and mastery from the passage?
A.Most successes are driven by Dunning-Kruger effect.
B.Making every effort to win is what mastery underlines.
C.Success means going after excellence over and over again.
D.Knowing how little we know sets us on the path to mastery.
39.Which of the following most probably shows the effect of a near win?
A.A writer penned a novel and became famous overnight.
B.A boxer, who lost in a close match, trained harder than before.
C.A scientist changed the research area after careful planning.
D.A teacher, who kept encouraging students, received an honor.
40.What is the writer’s main purpose in writing this passage?
A.To explain the true meaning of mastery. B.To inspire people to continue reaching higher.
C.To present the benefits of having the right goal. D.To compare different ways to deal with a near win.
