Owls live in almost every country in the world. Most owls don’t sleep at night. When they fly, you can’t hear them. They are very quiet. Owls are good at hunting(捕猎). They eat a lot of things such as mice, snakes, small birds and even fish. Owls have very good hearing. That helps them to hunt well in dark places. Their eyes are special. Both of their eyes face front. They can see very far away. There are facial disks(面盘)around their eyes. These facial disks can help with their hearing. Owls can turn their heads 270°. That helps them see what’s going on all around them.

Maybe because owls look a little different and have special life habits. There are a lot of stories about them. Some cultures believe that owls are very clever and some cultures think owls may bring bad luck to people. In fact, owls are really good friends of people. They eat lots of mice every year. That helps save a lot of food for people. But the number of owls in the world is becoming smaller and smaller because of people’s activities. Now owls are protected by law(法律)in many places of the world. For example, in some places, people can’t keep an owl as a pet at home.

Animals are natural resources that people have wasted all through our history.

Animals have been killed for their fur and feathers, for food, for sport, and simply because they were in the way. Thousands of kinds of animals have disappeared from the world forever. Hundreds more are on the danger list today. About 170 kinds in the United States alone are considered in danger.

Why should people care? Because we need animals. And because once they are gone, there will never be any more. Animals are more than just beautiful and interesting. They are more than just a source of food. Every animal has its place in the balance of nature (生态平衡). Destroying one kind of animal can create many problems. For example, when farmers killed large numbers of hawks (老鹰), the farmers stores of corn and grain were destroyed by rats and mice. Why? Because hawks eat rats and mice. With no hawks to keep down their numbers, the rats and mice multiplied (繁殖) quickly.

Luckily, some people are working to help save the animals. Some groups raise money to let people know about the problem. And they try to get the governments to pass laws protecting animals in danger. Quite a few countries have passed laws. These laws forbid (禁止) the killing of any animals or plants on the danger list. Slowly, the number of some animals in danger is growing.

32.Animals are important to us mainly because ________.

A.they give us a source of food

B.they are beautiful and lovely

C.they keep the balance of nature

D.they give us a lot of pleasure

33.What has happened to the animals on the earth?

A.Hundreds of kinds of animals have disappeared forever.

B.Many kinds of animals have died out.

C.about 170 kinds of animals have disappeared forever.

D.All kinds of animals are in danger.

34.Which of the following is NOT true?

A.People care much about animals because they need them.

B.Once a certain kind of animals is gone forever, there will never be any more.

C.Killing all rats and mice may cause some problems.

D.People must not kill any animals.

35.What can we infer from the fact that quite a few countries have passed laws protecting animals in danger?

A.Every person will know the importance of protecting wild animals.

B.Animals in danger will not be killed any more.

C.The number of some animals in danger will increase.

D.Animals in danger will be kept away from people.

D

I first saw the baby panda when she was only ten days old. We called her Xi Wang. This means “hope”.

When Xi Wang was born, she weighed just 100 grams and looked like a white mouse. At four months old, she weighed about eight kilograms and started to go outside for the first time. Eight months later, she was not a small baby any more and weighed over 35 kilograms.

In the beginning, Xi Wang drank her mother’s milk. When she was six 10 months old, she began to eat bamboo. When she was 20 months old, she learnt to look after herself.

Sadly, giant pandas face serious problems in the wild. For example, it is very difficult for pandas to have babies, and many baby pandas die when they are very young. Also, giant pandas live mainly on a special kind of bamboo. However, the bamboo forests are becoming smaller and smaller. As a result, pandas may not have a place to live or food to eat.

Giant pandas are now in danger. We should take action right away. Here are some ideas.

◎ help pandas have more babies

◎ build more panda reserves

◎ make laws to protect pandas

There are now only about 1,600 pandas in the wild. If we do nothing soon there may be none left! However, we do believe that where there is Xi Wang, there is hope.

36.Who is Xi Wang?

A.A panda.          B.A mouse                 C.A baby.                  D.A girl.

37.We can infer (推测) that Xi Wang ________ when she was 9 months old.

A.learnt to look after herself

B.went outside for the first time

C.looked like a white mouse

D.drank her mother’s milk

38.How many kinds of problems are mentioned (被提及) in paragraph four (第四段)?

A.One.                B.Two.                      C.Three.                    D.Four.

39.The underlined words “none left” means the pandas will ________.

A.die out             B.fall ill                    C.be in danger            D.grow up

40.The writer’s main purpose (目的) on the passage is to tell us ________.

A.pandas feed on bamboo

B.pandas are very clever

C.pandas face many problems

D.we should do something to protect pandas
