What is peer pressure (压力)? People who are the same age as you, like your classmates, are called peers. When they try to influence (影响) you to act, or to make you do something, it’s called peer pressure. Everyone has to deal with (处理) it, even the older people.

The influence of peer pressure

Peers can have a good influence on each other when they are encouraged to do something positive or pushed to grow in a beneficial way. You might admire (羡慕) a friend who is always good at sports and try to be more like him or her. Maybe you want to make others excited about your new favorite book, and now everyone’s reading it.

On the other hand, sometimes peers influence (影响) each other in bad ways. Negative peer pressure involves (包含) pressure to do something dangerous or damaging to themselves or others. For example, a few kids in school might try to get you to cut class with them when you should study at school or a kid in the neighborhood might want you to shoplift (在商店行窃) with him.

Why do people give in (屈服) to peer pressure?

Some kids give in to peer pressure because they want to be liked, or because they worry that other kids may laugh at them if they don’t go along with the group. Others may go along because they want to try something new. The idea that “everyone has to do it ” may influence some kids to leave their common sense (常识) behind.

How to walk away from peer pressure

Choose your friends wisely. If you choose friends who don’t smoke cigarettes, or lie (说谎), then maybe you won’t do these things either.

Even if you have peer pressure while you’re alone, there are still things you can do. You can be away from peers who pressure you to do something wrong. You can say “no” to them and walk away.

At last, if you go on to have peer pressure and you’re finding it difficult to deal with, talk to someone you depend on.

The Chinese shadow puppet play is an old art. It is usually played by five people. One moves the puppets, one sings and the other three people play music.

It’s said that it appeared in China over 2,000 years ago during the Han Dynasty (朝代). After the wife of the Emperor (皇帝) Han Wudi died of illness, the emperor was very sad. One day, a man called Li Shaoweng saw children playing with dolls and the shadows of the dolls were dancing on the wall. So he came up with an idea to help Han Wudi. He went back home and made a puppet of the emperor’s wife. He put sticks on the puppet’s hands and feet to make it easy to move.

When night came, he put up a cloth, lit (点燃) a candle (蜡烛) and invited the emperor to sit before the cloth. Li Shaoweng moved the puppet behind the cloth. The emperor felt like he was seeing his wife again and was very happy. After that the shadow puppet play became the emperor’s favorite hobby. It’s true that you can learn new words when you read or listen, but you should also study new words seriously. Here are a few things I do.

Make flashcards. I find this is really the best way to learn new words. Make some small cards and write the words on one side and either the words in your language or the meaning in easy English on the other side and test yourself. To make this work, you have to review as often as possible.

Make sentences with the new words. This is great if you can ask someone to check them. It is also great to make up crazy sentences. In that way you won’t forget them! I also collect example sentences of the words I’m trying to learn. If I see the word from a book, I write down the sentence.

Make up a mnemonic (助记符号). A mnemonic is a way to remember something, like a short story.

For example, if I want to remember the Japanese word “yukkuri” (which means “slowly”), I could think about the English words “you” and “curry”, and maybe imagine someone eating a plate of curry very, very slowly!

Put signs with English words on things in your house. For example, I put the word “kitchen” on the kitchen door. The problem is that it works for a while and then you get used to the words and forget to read them!

It’s tiring to run such a school. Zhang is now in poor health after all these years of hard work. She has to take many different pills(药) every day. Physical exercise is good for our mind, body and spirit. Today, exercise through online videos is becoming very popular. Since the Internet is widely used, it’s very easy for us to do so. That means we can exercise anytime anywhere.

One of my friends, Lin Fei, followed short videos to do exercise every day. “With these videos, I feel like exercising with a lot of people, and it’s enjoyable.” she said. Another friend of mine, Michael, told me that exercise videos are more time-saving than gyms(健身房). “With exercise videos, I don’t need to go to the gym. I don’t need to pay for the gyms, either. ”

With their examples, I decided to give it a try. When I told my plan to my elder sister Linda, a P.E. teacher, she was a little worried about exercise videos.

“Without being with someone in person, you will be lazy to exercise for a long time. Even worse, you may get hurt when you do wrong exercise” my sister said to me. “Well, if you really want to have a try, choose right videos. That’s very important. And then ask your friends for advice. You should try different ways to exercise to be healthy. ”

The meaning of life is what we choose it to be. To Jiang Bing, a man from Weinan, Shaanxi Province, life just means living and helping others. Suffering (受苦) from ALS (渐冻症) for more than 30 years, Jiang has never lost his love for life. What’s more, he taught more than 200 children for free for over twenty years.

At the age of 16, Jiang Bing fell to the ground on the way to school and was unable to stand up again. One doctor told him that he had a disease(疾病) that was hard to cure (治愈) and suggested giving up searching for treatment. Surprisingly, Jiang had no fear or despair (绝望) at that time. He kept studying every morning and cherished (珍视) every moment, spending one day like it was a month.

Though Jiang couldn’t enter a university himself because of the disease, he succeeded in teaching his younger sister and helping her get into a university in 1994. Not until then did the people living in the community realize that the special man could teach their children.

So they asked him for help. The next year, Jiang started helping children with their studies. Apart from the school subjects, he also taught them art and clay sculpture (泥塑). He once taught 24 children in one single class, all for free.

Today many of the children that he taught graduated from university. Zhao Feiyu, a student who once received Jiang’s help, runs an art training school now. “He taught us wisely and carefully, and took no money, ” he said, “He is my teacher and friend.”

Sometimes the world may feel like an unhappy place. However, you can make a difference. If you make even a person smile today, you can help make this world a better place. Here is a list of ideas to help you.

Send a handwritten letter. In this age where everything is sent by email, it is a shock to receive a letter through the post. Writing a few words on paper to a friend is an easy way to make one smile. Even a postcard with a couple of sentences could really make someone’s day—all for the price of a stamp!

Volunteer. Volunteering is one of the nicest things you can do. It requires(需要)some time and research to find the perfect project before volunteering. There are so many chances, so you are sure to find one that is right for you. And it doesn’t necessarily have to take up all your time—it could be once a week or a couple of times a year.

Make something for a special person. Whether you’re creative or not, taking time to make something for someone else shows how much you appreciate(感激)them. Even if you think you are not creative, the receiver will feel lucky to get such a special gift that you put your time into. Some ideas could include a card, painting, drawing, song, poem or cake!

Tell someone “I love you”. It can be anyone—a family member or a friend. You don’t even have to say “I love you”. Perhaps you can tell a friend that you appreciate all they are to you, or remind your mum that you love her. Sometimes, in our busy lives, we forget to take a moment to tell people what they mean to us.

Nowadays, a lot of students are interested in rope jumping (跳绳). It’s an easy way to learn rope jumping. You can jump alone or with your classmates. If you jump alone, you will need a short rope and it will be just long enough for your height (身高).

When you start to jump, you must turn the rope slowly and high enough to let you jump freely and safely. Rope jumping is not only great fun, but also a great exercise. Nowadays, students usually spend a lot of time on their study, and they don’t have enough time to do sports. The best way to solve the problem is to get them to jump and play, and rope jumping does this very well.

In our school, each student has a rope. They can jump in P. E classes or after class. It is very interesting to see how long they can jump. In rope jumping timing means turning the rope slowly enough for you to jump over at the right time without striking (撞击) your feet.

If you like unusual places, you should visit the Hebrides Islands(岛). Not many people live on these islands in the northwest of Scotland. The land is not good for farming. It’s only good for keeping sheep. The winters are long, cold, and wet. It’s hard to make a living on the Hebrides, but for a visitor, these islands can be very special.

They’re not for everyone, however. Even in summer it is cool and windy. The water is too cold for swimming. There are no forests, and there are only a few trees and green fields. Instead of fields, there are just rocks(岩石)and small plants. The hills, too, are just piles of rocks. Sometimes the view(风景)looks like pictures of the moon.

But there is beauty in this place. From the beach you can often see all the way to the rocky hills. From the hills you can see far out to other islands and the open ocean(海洋). The colors, too, are special. Blue is everywhere. It’s in the sky and in the ocean. It is in the tiny flowers that grow on the hills. In the spring there is also green in the hills. In the summer and fall the hills are more purple. Often the air is soft and gray with clouds and rain.

On these islands you can forget about the rest of the world. The evenings are quiet. The restaurants close early, and there isn’t any nightlife. Visitors stay at a guest house or a Bed and Breakfast. This is the best way to learn about life on the islands. The islanders are often friendly, and they like to talk.

If you want to meet islanders, you can also try the pubs(酒吧)or even the shops. People are in no hurry here. They like to chat about the weather or the fishing. There are also some tourist shops, but not many. They sell the usual tourist things. They also sell some beautiful clothes made of wool from the islands.

For more than seventy years, psychologists(心理学家)and teachers have studied the link(联系)between the place where students choose to sit in class and what they are like as people and learners.

At the back

People often think that students who sit at the back are lazy(懒惰的). But some researchers say it is not. In fact, shy students often choose the back row because they probably won’t speak much. In big classrooms, it can be hard to see the board and hear what the teacher is saying. This could be the reason why students who sit here often get lower grades on tests and exams.

At the side

Students who choose to sit on the sides of the classroom are usually gentle(文静的)and thoughtful. They are usually interested in class. They like watching and listening but they don’t like joining in. These students are usually also very good at taking notes. These people usually get good grades in school and are interested in learning.

In the middle

Do you sit in the middle of the classroom? Then you probably like your teacher. You probably also have a good relationship with your classmates. Caring, outgoing, and cheerful students usually choose to sit in the middle. They are usually serious(认真的)about learning and feel disappointed(失望的)with low grades on tests and exams.

At the front

Students at the front usually want to discuss things with the teacher and are often very interested in the subject. They want to be in the best place to see and hear everything the teacher does and says. But it can be difficult to see and hear what other students do and say in class.

Now, think about where you sit and how you fit.

Agatha Christie (阿加莎·克里斯蒂) is one of the most popular writers of all time. About four billion copies of her books have been sold. And they have been translated into 103 languages. She is often called the queen of the “whodunit”. A whodunit is a story that starts with a crime (犯罪), usually murder (凶杀).Then the main character of the story tries to discover who did it (or who-done-it). Readers love Agatha Christie’s stories because there are lots of clues and puzzles for them to think about as they read. Her two most famous characters are the Belgian detective Hercule Poirot and the elderly amateur (业余的) detective Miss Marple. Christie always wrote about places that she knew, like Torquay, the English town where she was born in 1890.

Agatha Christie died in 1976 but her books continue to be popular today. For one week every year, lovers of her stories can go to the Agatha Christie Festival in Torquay. People dress up in clothes from the 1920s and 1930s, like characters in her stories. Jazz bands play at tea parties and there are dinners on old trains and at old country houses. “Murder” is everywhere, and visitors have a lot of fun trying to discover who the “killer” is—or whodunit.

Getting Creative with crime

An experiment carried out at Newcastle University aimed at reducing the number of bike thefts has produced some unusual results. The most efficient way of stopping people from stealing bikes seems almost too simple to be true. If you want to persuade thieves not to act, make them feel they’re being watched!

Posters showing a large pair of eyes were put up near three bike racks at the university, while other bike racks had no posters. The researchers explained that the number of thefts decreased by 62 per cent compared to the previous year at racks with posters. However, at the other racks, thefts actually increased by 63 per cent. Experts claim that clearly visible images of eyes make people feel they’re being watched. They say that we all care what other people think about us and that’s why we behave better when we think someone is looking. Now officials have agreed to carry out similar projects at train stations all over the country.

The “giant eyes” poster isn’t the only unusual method being used to try and fight crime on UK streets. In the East Midlands city of Leicester, police are inviting people to make large woolly balls and hang them up in trees around the area. They hope that these colourful additions to neighbourhoods will help create a safer place to live. The thinking behind the idea is that if you create a pleasant environment, people are more likely to behave better. “We live in a world where our every move is being watched by CCTV cameras”, one of the organisers told us. “The cameras are there to deter (威慑) possible criminals, but they come at a price, and many people don’t like being watched 24 hours a day. We believe there’s another way. We want to encourage people to take more pride in where they live.”

However, not all residents are happy—many refuse to believe it will make any difference. They’re demanding that the police do more to reduce trouble in the area. One local resident told us, I recommend that the police stop wasting their time on mad plans like this and do some real policing. We need to see more policemen walking around our streets, especially at night.

Once, there lived a wise man. His son, however, had no goal in life and wasn’t happy.

As the years passed, the man was more and more worried. One day, he handed his son a map and said, “I want you to go and find a treasure.”

The son set out eagerly. He travelled really far, across forests and mountains. Finally, he reached the place and began to dig. He dug and dug, but nothing was found. Tired and sad, he decided to go back home.

On his way back, he noticed dancing birds and beautiful flowers. He met happy farmers in the fields. He found everything nice!

He got home, and his father asked, “How was your journey to the place? Did you enjoy it?”

“Of course not! I was worried that someone else would find the treasure before I did. But I really enjoyed the journey back home and forgot the pain of not finding the treasure. ” The son continued to tell his father what he noticed on his way back.

“Nice things are always there,” the father smiled. “My son, I want you to have a goal. If you don’t have a goal, you won’t set out. “Fall” and “Auturmn”

What season is it in October? If you ask people from UK, they will tell you it’s “autumn”. But if you go to US, you will find that people use “autumn” or “fall”.

According to Dictionary.com, both words have been around for a long time, but neither of them was first to describe this season. During this season, crops would become ripe(成熟) and farmers would have a big harvest. So in Old English, this season was simply called “harvest”.

Then, in the 1600s, more people left their farms and moved to cities. With fewer people farming, the word “harvest” became less useful. English speakers needed a different name for the season. They knew leaves fell from trees during the season, so people started calling it “the fall of the leaf”, or “fall” for short.

But at the end of the 1600s, autumn, from the French word “autompne” and the Latin “autumnus”, came to English. “Fall” as the word for this season disappeared slowly.

At the same time, people in UK were making their first trip to North America. They brought the words “fall” and “autumn” with them. That’s why today Americans have two names for one season.

A new report from a university says 80% of the world’s teens don’t get enough exercise every day. The report was based on(基于)a research done with about 2 million students aged 11 to 17 around the world. According to the report, activity standards(水平)are different in different countries and they are also different between boys and girls.

Why don’t teens go out for exercise? One main reason is that they always have technology products in their hands or around them. They spend too much time on smartphones, computers and TVs in their free time. Many teens find it very hard to pull themselves away from these devices(设备). The report says that young people need to do less in the digital world but more in the real world. It advises kids to get at least an hour of exercise every day. This could include running, biking, playing sports, or many other outdoor activities.

More and more research shows that exercise not only helps the body, but also helps the brain. Besides, doing sports helps kids to make friends. Mark, a sports fan, started to play football when he was six years old. He used to be shy and weak, but now he has become taller and stronger. From this autumn, middle schools begin to have labor education(劳动教育). Every week, students have at least one class to learn about cooking, keeping animals, growing plants and more. Chinese people didn’t think much about this in the past. According to a 2019 report, Chinese kids only spend 12 minutes doing labor activities like cleaning the room each day, while US kids spend 1.2 hours each day. How do young people feel about the new subject? Let’s take a look.

Wu Ruoxuan, 12, Tianjin

I like labor classes best because they make me feel happier! I am usually tired after a long day at school. However, after cooking or fixing something during the labor class, I feel much more relaxed and ready to face more difficulty!

Zhang Siyi, 12, Beijing

Our school has a long history of letting students grow plants and feel the joy of labor. This year, we planted sunflowers, tomatoes, potatoes, rice, cucumbers, and cabbages on the rooftop of the teaching building. It’s not easy! They have different needs. For example, cabbages need more water, and we need to clear away the grass for the sunflowers. Labor classes teach me important skills that we can use in daily lives.

According to the new standard(标准) for labor education, middle school students need to learn the following skills.

Organize their rooms and classrooms.

Cook three or four dishes.

Fix some home appliances(电器).

Take part in local labor activities such as planting and fishing.

Don’t be worried if you don’t have these skills. Start learning now!

For me, my father always stands by my side. He is the “VIP” (very important person) in my life. Now I want to share some stories between us.

When I was a kid, my father was often busy with his work. I spent a lot of time with my grandmother at that time, I was really a naughty (淘气的) girl. I didn’t know why my father couldn’t just stay at home and play with me like other children’s fathers. All I remembered about my father’s love was some candies.

As time went by, I studied in a boarding school (寄宿学校) and one day I told my father on the phone that I missed my mother’s dishes very much. To my surprise, when I was going to bed, one of my classmates told me that someone was calling me. I ran out and saw that my father was outside with a lunch-box (饭盒) in his hand. He went over and gave me that lunch-box. He was very tired from the long trip. Without saying anything, he went away in the dark. Back to the room, I cried.

By sharing the stories, I just want to tell you that your parents are loving you in their special way.
