Now people are trying to make the world a better place for birds to live in. People in China start the Bird Loving Week. Students from all parts of the country have been doing something to care for birds.
Meng Yiru, a 16-year-old student from Nanyang Model High School in Shanghai, asked people to protect birds: Never put birds in cages. Go to visit them in the wild if you really love them. “I’ll never forget the little sparrow (麻雀) I kept in a cage,” said Meng. “It stopped eating after I caught it and soon died.” Meng and her classmates put many of their ideas in their 300-word report to ask people to take better care of birds.
China is the home of more than 1,000 kinds of birds because the country is large and has almost every weather type to suit them.
But not everyone knows how to take good care of them. Some cut down trees and destroy the birds’ homes. This has made the number of the birds go down quickly. A study shows that one out of eight birds, more than 1,200 kinds, in the world could die out. This includes 95 percent of albatrosses (信天翁) and 60 percent of cranes (鹤). Some birds you see every day, like pigeons and parrots, are also in danger!
To help them, people have set up 7,500 reserves which are suitable and safe for the birds. In China, there are big reserves like the ones near the Dongting Lake in Hunan and the Poyang Lake in Jiangxi. Is there anything that you can do for birds? Take care of their homes. Feed them with something delicious. Well, think it over and begin to do it now!

A new study (研究) shows that hippos (河马) can tell the difference between their friends’ voices and those of strangers. And they have a special way of reacting (回应) when they don’t like what they hear.
Hippos are one of the largest animals on Earth. However scientists know little about them because they are difficult to study. First, they spend most of the day in water, coming out onto land at night to eat grass. Second, getting too close to them can be very dangerous because they can move quickly through water and run very fast.
To learn more about them, French and Portuguese scientists decided to study their calls. The scientists recorded calls from seven hippo groups. They then used a loudspeaker to play the recordings to each group— first to hippos in the same group; then to a neighboring group on the same lake; and finally to a group of strangers from another lake. No matter which group of calls the scientists played, the hippos reacted by making their own calls coming near the loudspeaker and sometimes spraying out poo (喷粪便). However, they reacted (反应) the most strongly and sprayed out the most poo if the call came from a total stranger.
Scientists think this finding could be useful when they have to move hippos to a new place to protect them. Playing recordings of the hippos’ calls can help them get used to each other before they become neighbors.

Derrick Downey was relaxing on his balcony in Los Angeles when a squirrel suddenly appeared. They stared at each other for a few seconds, and then the man asked the squirrel, “Do you want something to eat?” “It seemed like he did, so I told him, ‘Stay here. I’ll be right back,’”Downey recalled (回忆).
Downey found some peanuts in his kitchen and hurried back to the balcony. The squirrel was still there, so Downey thought he was listening to him. When he held out his hand with the peanuts, the animal pulled his hand closer and started eating. Downey had been feeling down, and this special meeting cheered him up.
Since that day in 2020, the squirrel has continued to come to Downey’s balcony for treats. Sometimes, he brings his friend there. Downey named the pair Richard and Maxine. He shared a video of himself feeding and talking to the squirrels. The video went viral (走红) quickly. Some called him the best “squirrel dad”. Some compared him to Snow White. “You’re like a Disney princess,” they wrote.
Downey was excited that his social media followers liked the animals as much as he did, so he started posting daily videos of Richard and Maxine. In a recent one, he tried to teach Maxine a lesson. “You’re not always going to have the best of days,” he said. “When life is down, don’t put too much pressure on yourself.”
Downey has also built a house for the squirrels. He encourages his followers to join him in decorating it. He has received paintings, tiny furniture, houseplants and even a working mini-TV. The man said he didn’t expect to attract so many people with his squirrel videos. He has always loved animals, and he was just following his heart. As time went on, the squirrel house on Downey’s balcony became a wonderland. The followers continued to send different things to decorate the house.
The story of Downey and the squirrels also began to spread beyond social media. Local schools started using it as an example in their environmental education classes, teaching students about the importance of animal protection and kindness towards all living beings. Downey was invited to speak at some of these schools. Bitwalking is an invention by a small company in London. To make people walk more, this new app on the mobile phone is paying people, which is based on (在……基础上) their daily walking steps.
With this app, walkers can earn one “Bitwalking dollar” for about 1000 steps (about 8 kilometers). Three bitwalking dollars can be earned by one person per day at most. The money people earned can be spent on online shopping sites (地点) or exchanged for cash (现金).

By walking around with the Bitwalking app, they could earn three times more.
