In the film Forrest Gump, there’s a famous saying: “Life is like a box of chocolate. You never know what you’re going to get.” It’s the same with blind boxes. The history of blind boxes can be back to lucky bags sold in Japan from the late 1860s. It becomes big business in China these days. The market for blind boxes could grow to 25 billion(十亿) yuan in 2025 from about 3 billion yuan in 2019. During the Double 11 shopping day, Pop Mart, a popular blind box company in China, sold 55,000 Labubu dolls in just 9 seconds.
Why do people like these blind boxes? First, they have beautiful and cute looks inside the boxes. Second, they’re like miniature(微型的) cartoon characters. It’s possible to put them almost anywhere in your home. But another, perhaps more important reason is that the “surprise factor(因素)” makes them fun to buy. Sometimes, it’s a toy that you want. But sometimes, it’s not the one you want. Each of these small, closed boxes has one of many toys in it. The buyer doesn’t know what they can get until they open the box. “The most interesting thing about blind boxes is the gap(差距) between what you expect and what you get,” said Wen Xi, a blind box lover from Beijing.
Some people surely get much fun from the boxes, but others worry that children might spend too much money on these toys.
If you really want something special from a blind box, you might not get it in the first box. So you buy another box, hoping that you’ll get the toy you want this time. Then you buy another, and another. Pretty soon, you’ve spent all your money. I think we have to be careful about it. Part of growing up is learning self-control(自控), after all.

Many Chinese primary and middle school students can’t do housework today and do not take such work seriously. So some are unable to cook or wash their own clothes when they enter college. The Ministry of Education (教育部) starts new curriculum standard (新课程标准) for housework education for students from Grade 1 to Grade 9, making it an important course that students must take at least once a week. The new standard asks students in Grade 1—2 to learn to sweep the floor, Grade 3—4 to learn to plant vegetables, and Grade 5—6 to have the skills of cooking two to three dishes. Students in middle school will learn to repair machines instead of paying someone to do it. This new standard is popular among many people.
Wang: We all know housework education is important. However, some students are unable to do the easiest housework, as their parents think they should spend more time on study. Some of them grow to be unwilling to do any kind of housework. Housework education should make students become more interested in labor (劳动), help them try different kinds of housework, and most importantly, correct the way they think about labor. The housework course will become an important way to make their personalities better.
Li: In order for students to grow up in an all-round way, primary and middle schools should add the housework course to their curriculum and help students learn and love housework. It is important to make the housework class interesting so that the students will really get some skills for daily life. For this reason, schools have to invite more professional (专业的) teachers to give classes instead of putting this new stress (压力) on parents and other teachers who are already busy with their daily work.
Zhang: Some people think students don’t have to waste time learning housework. If you want to have meals, you can order food through the Internet. And for machine repairs, you can ask for professional help. However, people with the skills of housework can go through daily life much more easily.
It is the first step in helping young students have a healthy idea of labor and be able to take care of themselves in daily life.
Most of us never thought about making an educational toy (益智玩具) by ourselves. If we need an educational toy, we will go to the nearest store to buy it. But things are not so easy in the third world countries. Some families even have no food to put on the table, so it is impossible for them to buy educational toys.
Then how to get these kids interested in science? The Indian engineer Arvind Gupta thought about this question for a long time. While still an engineering student at college, he helped to teach the children who were too poor to go to school. He found a good job at India’s Tata Motors after he finished school, and then he spent the next five years designing cars.
But he didn’t want to do that for the rest of his life. He took a year’s course and became a member of the Hoshangabad Science Teaching Project. Mr Gupta found the whole project so helpful, so he decided to leave his high-paying job and started designing educational toys to help the poor children.
When the Internet became a popular learning tool, Mr Gupta started a website (网站) called Toys from Waste, and now it includes more than 260 videos. About 50,000 children and teachers visit the website every day to learn from the videos. Some young children have even won very important science competitions.

In China, we call those born (出生) after 2000 the “post-00s”generation (00后). In English, young people born between the mid-1990s and 2010 have another name-Generation Z or Gen Z.
Thanks to social media (社交媒体), more people know about small problems, and only a small number of young people care about them. So, some people describe this generation as thinking little about others. However, Gen Z is, in fact, more grounded (踏实的) than people think.
A study by Bank of America showed that over half of young people aged between 18 and 23 didn’t plan to buy a house in 5 years. “They are not just thinking about it,”said a work at Bank of America. “They are doing something about it.” To make their dream come true, Gen Z would choose to save for a down payment (首付), not to go shopping or take a vacation.
This is not only in the United States. In Europe and Japan, Gen Z thinks a lot before buying things. They like to buy things they need more. That’s because they saw the things their parents went through during the 2008 financial crisis (金融危机).
Social problems are also a center of worries for Gen Z. They think they are able to play a big role in making the world better. In India, young people choose a new leader who is able to help with most of their problems. “I went to the villages and saw how girls there lived. Keeping women safe is the most important for me.” said Monika Donal, 20, an Indian student.

Every day, most of us are drawing our own pictures of who we are online. We put pictures and words on Sina Weibo and Wechat; we have music to listen to and films to watch; we write how we feel in apps like Douban and Zhihu…..
The Internet keeps our likes and dislikes, our faces, and even the way we think and act online. These are our digital legacy(数字遗产) to our friends and family. They can remember us after we die. And they can even say something about what we are like.
How might we use so much personal information one day? The UK TV program Black Mirror gave one answer. In that show, a man, Ash, died in a car accident(车祸). His girlfriend Martha learned about a robot, and it could bring him “back to life”. The robot’s face, actions, language and other living ways are all from the real Ash’s digital legacy. Soon, Martha found that she could hardly tell the difference between the real Ash and the robot one. This idea might seem a little scary to some people. But you might agree that this kind of robot could be possible in the future. No one wants to let their loved ones go after they died.
Some may take back or even delete(删除)your information if you don’t use them for a long time. For example, you will lose your Taobao account(账户)if you don’t use any of Alibaba’s services for six months. Others may not do this. Users can choose 10 people they trust to get their digital legacy from Google. Google will send them the digital legacy, like the users’e-mails, photos and so on. These people can also choose to delete all their Google informartion or keep it in their own way.
One of the most well-known directors(导演)of our time is Stephen Spielberg. He was born in Cincinnati on 18 December, 1946. His father was an electric engineer and his mother was a performing pianist. His sister, Anne Spielberg, became a screen writer who wrote the stories for many famous films. Stephen had always wanted to be a director ever since he was a young boy. When he was just 13 years old, he made a 40-minute film. It won a local competition. Three years later, he made a film called Firelight, which made one hundred dollars’ profit(收益)at the cinema in his hometown. Many of the ideas from this film were later used for one of his most famous films called Close Encounters of the Third Kind. When he was 18 years old, he wanted to go to a film school so that he could improve his skills and become an even better director. But he was unsuccessful in getting a place at this school, so he went to a university in California to study English. Even though he had failed to(没有)get into the school he wanted to go to, he didn’t let this stop him following his dream of becoming a great director. Stephen Spielberg has directed many films since his first major film in 1976. He now owns many different businesses, most of which are involved in the film industry.

Most of us don’t realize we are special. That’s because some people in our lives look down
upon us and make us feel worthless. You don’t save lives every day, you are not famous. That doesn’t mean that you’re not special. Being special means many things, like being a volunteer, helping your friends, listening to someone who feels alone or working all day long to support families. Here are some signs that will show you how special you are.
You think there is always more to learn
You’re modest and you’re interested in what happens around the world. Also, you’re curious and you always feel you should learn new things or improve some of your skills.
You’re kind to others
When you meet new people or when you are dealing with someone you already know, like your friends or workmates, you would like to smile and be kind, just because there is no reason to treat others as if they were less important. Being kind makes you special and unique.
You understand others’ feelings
When someone talk about his personal life and experiences with you, sharing secrets or feelings with you, you perfectly understand the way they feel. When someone tells you “I’m fine”, you know there might be something more going on according to their voice or their experiences, and you try to listen to them, letting them talk about how they feel.
You like to travel
You’re curious about other countries and other ways of life. You give yourself the gift of learning from other cultures because you know how much this can make your richer. You like to have a communication with people who have different experiences of life and you’re happy to share your culture with them as well.

All of us have friends, and we often classify(分类) them as ordinary(普通的) friends, good friends, best friends and bad friends. How do we make friends with others? What kind of people should we choose to be our true friends? Let’s have a look .
Have good qualities
We should choose someone with a good quality as our friend. As the saying goes, “One takes the behavior(行为) of one’s company(陪伴).” For example, if we stay close to those dishonest people, we will also become dishonest.
Often make progress(进步)
If people always would like to make progress, they won’t stop. So if we make friends with those people, we will also try to learn from them.
Be able to help you
We are not able to finish everything by ourselves. We may need someone to help us with our study or other things in our daily life.
For most of us, one or two true friends are enough. They will always stay with you whether(是否) you are happy or not.
Remember not to make friends with those people—when you are successful, they will run to you, but when you are in trouble, they will leave you.

Courage (勇气) is the ability to be brave in different kinds of situations in our life. Here and there, now and then, everyone needs courage to do something well. Courage may make you confident of your success. If you have courage, you will not show fear in face of anything difficult or dangerous.
How can we build up our courage?
Believe that you will be successful. Take chances and know that you have your own talents. Besides, your family and friends are always there for you.
Exercise your courage. It is like a muscle (肌肉). The more we use it, the stronger our courage will be.
Know that giving up is not a choice. It’s much easier to give up, and it takes courage to say or do what you think is right, even when other people think you are wrong.
Fight to control your fear. Courageous people may still be afraid, but the difference is that they can control their fear. They don’t let it hold them back but use it as a reminder of what they can lose if they don’t go on.
Get courage by reading inspiring (令人鼓舞的) stories of brave people. Abraham Lincoln is one of the people who you may think of.
A game of catch is not difficult at all. Two people throw a ball back and forth (来回地掷球). It seems a little boring. The two people are close enough to talk, but too far to touch.
In fact, playing catch is part of baseball practice. It’s a popular game. Because baseball is an American sport, and a big part of being American, playing catch is kind of an all-American dad activity. Outside cities, most people have backyards – not large enough to play baseball in, but just big enough for a game of catch. Those without yards can play in streets.
But any American kid will tell you it’s much more than a game. Playing catch is a time to be with your father. It’s a time when there’s nothing to worry about except catching a ball. When they play it, words move together with the ball itself, back and forth, easy and relaxing(放松). Kids and dads spend time together.
The game can be good memories(记忆) of dads. Why? Dads are usually very busy. This is a time when a kid has all of his or her dad’s attention(注意力). There is no work, no phone and no other people around to take your dad away from you. For the time that it takes to play a game of catch, your dad is all yours.

Television have been necessary in most houses for a long time. Children are very fond of watching TV. Some parents are happy about that because it keeps children from playing with and breaking things.
Watching TV can help your children learn about lots of things such as music, arts and many other things. They will learn about what is good and what is bad. TV also offers children new information all over the world.
However, it’s not right to say that watching TV doesn’t have any bad effect (影响) on children. You can’t let them watch TV as much as they want. Watching TV takes a lot of time. Children need to feel the world by themselves not just from TV. Besides, children are growing and they need to move around and get lots of exercise. Sitting quietly and watching TV too much will make children become weaker.
Most children like to eat snacks while watching TV. That will make them put on weight. To make it worse, there may be too many ads and bad things on TV. These things of course are bad for children.
As parents you should control (控制) the time spent on TV. You have to choose the right channels (频道) for them and shouldn’t let the TV be on all day. Turn it off right after their programmes (节目) are over. Ask them to do activities after school. Never put a TV in the bedroom, especially in your children’s room!

Today, people in the world have busy lives, and they often feel unhappy under so much pressure. In fact, keeping happy is important and necessary for everyone. Most people want to be happy, but few know how to be happy. Money and success can bring pleasure, however, it won’t last long. Actually, happiness depends on(依靠) ourselves.
Here are some ways to help you be happy.
The first secret is to enjoy the simple life. We often spend too much time thinking about the future, for example, going to a famous university or getting a good job after graduation(毕业). You should enjoy the simple pleasures in life, such as reading a good book, listening to your favorite music and spending time on good friends.
The second secret is to be active. Many people enjoy dancing or playing sports. You can forget all your problems and think only about the activity you are doing.
The third secret is to help others. It is a good way to keep happy. You always feel happy when you do something nice for someone. You can do housework for your parents, help a friend or a classmate, or go shopping to buy food for an old neighbor.
In a word, learning to be happy is good for your health.

Oct. 16 is World Food Day. The UN started the day in 1979. It reminds (提醒) people not to waste food and fight hunger.
A number of people in the world still don’t have enough food to eat. The food shortage (短缺) is a big problem all over the world. Now, there are more than 1000 million hungry people in the world according to the UN. Many children go to sleep hungry, and 15 million of them die of hunger each year.
There are several reasons for food shortage. First, there are more natural disasters. Also, a growing population (人口) makes feeding everyone more difficult.
Another big reason is food waste. Most people don’t realize how much food they throw away every day. The average (平均的) person throws away 50kg of food every year. According to the UN, more than one third of all food goes to waste each year.
Over 1,300 billion kilograms of food is wasted each year. The food wasted in Europe can feed 200 million people, while in Latin America 300 million a year.
So think twice before you throw away food. You’d better order as much food as you can eat at a restaurant. If you can’t eat all, take the rest home. Some food may not taste great, but your body needs it. Keep an eye on what food you have at home. Don’t buy too much. Don’t cook too much.
When you throw away food, you are not just wasting the food itself. Resources (资源), such as energy, time and water, are also wasted while growing and cooking. So everyone should know that it is important to save food. Saving food is saving ourselves.

In 2003, China sent its first astronaut, Yang Liwei, into space. Since then, 13 Chinese astronauts have “reached for the stars”. Zhai Zhigang, Wang Yaping and Ye Guangfu are three of them. They carried out the latest (最近的) Shenzhou XIII mission (任务). Have you ever dreamed of becoming an astronaut like them? How did they get there?
Health is important
To be an astronaut, you need to be very healthy. Good eyesight (视力), a strong heart and lungs (肺) are important. You’d better not have other small problems. For example, you can’t have scars (伤疤) either. They may split (裂开) in space, as Pang Zhihao, a space scientist, told the Beijing Morning Post. A decayed tooth could get worse in space and bring trouble to astronauts.
Become stronger with hard training
In China, you must be a great pilot before you can be an astronaut. You must fly more than 600 hours without accidents. It’s very difficult. For example, you need to build your muscles (肌肉) as strong as professional (职业的) athletes by running, swimming and doing pull-ups (引体向上). You will also wear a 200-kilogram suit and do tasks underwater for six or seven hours and you can’t eat or go to the toilet. This is like doing tasks during a spacewalk.
Learn science
Knowledge (知识) is important as well. Astronauts take 60 courses to get ready for a mission, including math, English, spacecraft design (设计), physics and many more. So they will know what to do when emergencies (紧急情况) happen during the mission. They can also do scientific experiments (实验) in space.

Four types of friends you need in your life
Do you know that people will die early if they have no friends during their lifetime? The survey shows if people want to live longer and more happily, you need to have some friends who can share your sadness and happiness or can be helpful when you are in trouble.
The following friends are just what you need to keep the doctor away.
A Loyal Best Friend
Everyone needs a friend who will support you in different situations. This kind of friend knows all of your deepest and darkest secrets, but still loves you all the same.
A Friendly Neighbor
These days, a lot of people don’t know their own neighbors. It’s a shame, because some neighbors can be the most helpful people. If you forget to lock the front door when you are on holiday, you can call your neighbors to lock it for you. So it’s wonderful to have nice and helpful neighbors.
A Workmate
You’ll find it much easier to chat with someone than eating lunch alone every day. Your workmate doesn’t have to be your best friend. If you two get along with each other, you can always start going out with them outside of the office.
A Friend from a Different Culture
If everyone has a friend from a different culture, the world would be much better. Remember that don’t make friends with someone just because they are from a different culture. Instead, keep your mind open, and if you meet someone from other countries, try to learn about their customs, values, and traditions.
If you have such kinds of friends, you will surely live longer and more happily.
请根据短文内容,完成信息记录表,每空一词。
As a saying goes, “If you have a good friend, your happiness is doubled and your sadness is halved.” Friends are always a helping hand (安慰的) shoulder, a patient ear to listen to you. Man is a social animal by nature. We all need friends. So it is necessary (必要的) for you to know how to make friends.
The first step is to open yourself up. If you want to make good friends, you should be able to share what you think and how you feel with other people first. When you are in a conversation (交谈), you’d better express (表达), the person doing all the talking may think the other person has no interest in what he is saying.
One of the most important keys to building a strong friendship with other people is to listen to them—really listen. When your friends tell you something that happened to them or complain about a situation, they are usually not looking for agreement but just want to be heard. So don’t try to change their mind or work out their problems, just let them know that you are listening to them.
Respecting (尊重) your friends is also important to keep your relationships healthy and strong. Looking at your friends while they are talking to you is one way to show your respect, as they will feel that what they are saying is important to you.
Unconditional (无条件的) support and encouragement (鼓励) is one of the things which friends have. True friendship means offering a shoulder when they need it, and laughing with them when they are happy. Only in this way, the tree of friendship can last for along time.
