It was about one kilometre to go on the road ___11___ I had to turn off, so I started cycling faster and faster.

Every block, I was gaining on him just a little bit. In a few minutes, I was only about 100 metres behind him. I got so ___12___ that I really picked up speed, trying my best to push myself. Maybe you have ___13___ I was cycling in an Olympic triathlon (三项全能运动).

Planting the right seeds at the right time will not take as lots of efforts as we think. And some easy garden vegetables do grow themselves with little care. Here are four vegetables that are perfect for a backyard garden.

There is really only one important rule for planting green beans—don’t plant them too early. They won’t survive a frost (霜) which can cause the seeds to become bad. They may also stop producing in the middle of the summer, but if you water them, they will continue to produce once the temperatures start to drop in early fall. The more beans you pick, the more the plant will grow. Brussels sprouts (抱子甘蓝)—this sweet vegetable can be grown in nearly any home garden with rich sunlight. They have a long growing season compared with other vegetables. Their taste improves if they are covered with frost. However, they only bear a few days of cold weather, so be sure to harvest them quickly.
Broccoli (西兰花) is a cool-weather plant that grows best in spring and fall. If grown in winter to avoid heavy frost, broccoli can also be grown indoors and moved to the garden when temperatures rise. When you grow broccoli, be sure to watch out for pests (害虫). If you start seeing pests, just pick them off by hand. Peas are a great choice for new gardeners. All you need is a container that is at least 10 inches deep and something for the plants to climb. They prefer lower temperatures, and once the heat of summer hits, pea plants will stop producing. If garden space is limited, you can pull them up and replace peas in summer with another crop that likes heat.

22. What can you do if you want to harvest more green beans?

A. Plant the seeds in earliest spring.

B. Avoid watering them in summer.

C. Collect them as often as possible.

D. Keep them warm through autumn.

23. Which of the following descriptions about Brussels sprouts is true?

A. They can produce all year round.

B. They can’t survive a long cold winter.

C. They can grow well in any garden.

D. They taste better if covered with snow.

24. What do broccoli and peas have in common (共有的) according to the passage?

A. They enjoy cool weather.

B. They take up a lot of space.

C. They can deal with frost.

D. They stop growing in summer.

Stories are a powerful way to communicate. We all learn through stories. I’ve raised a three-step formula (公式) anyone can use to create powerful stories that will help you make your point. First, identify your truth. Second, think of the decisive experience that had led you to this “truth”. Third, shape those experiences into a story that you can tell at the drop of a hat. Here’s an example of how I have used this formula.

Years ago, I had an assignment to conduct a team-building session. The client (客户) was my friend. I arrived at his office 5:00 p.m. the day before our session. He asked me if I had an agenda (议程) for tomorrow’s meeting. I told him that, first we’ll do A, then B, followed by C. We’ll finish up with D. Still he asked if I had an agenda.

At first, I thought he hadn’t been listening to what I just said, so I repeated myself, “First we’ll do A, then B, followed by C. We’ll finish up with D.” He said, “I know. That’s what you just said. Do you have an agenda?”

At that point it dawned on me that he was looking for a printed agenda. I said, “No, but we really don’t need one. I’ve done many meetings like this. It will go fine.” He said, “I’m not comfortable winging it (临时发挥).” So we created an agenda using PowerPoint. The next day, the meeting went off smoothly. We followed the agenda I had in my head and he had on the PowerPoint slide. Everyone agreed it was one of the best meetings of this type they had ever attended.

It became clear to me that if I want to influence not just this client, but anyone, I need to adapt (适应) my communication style to theirs. From that day on, I modify my communication style to meet the needs of the other person.

I am 24, and during my short amount of years, I’ve had a few different jobs. I truly believe there is something to be learned at every new job you try.

With Christmas on the way, I needed work badly as I was on a poor student budge. So when I noticed that one of my favorite stationery shops was seeking Christmas Casuals, I did not hesitate to put in my resume (简历). Although I was rejected after the first interview round, I managed to get the job after one of the girls dropped out.

But my first few shifts really didn’t go well. Christmas is a busy time and things move very fast. My manager told me that I could ask her questions anytime I felt confused. There were four other Christmas Casuals, and it didn’t take me long to figure out that only one of us would still work there by the end of the season. I found it difficult to keep up with all of the new products coming in and could tell that my sales pitch (推销辞令) didn’t come across as smooth as some of my co-workers. Then, I was laid off right before the busy period. My manager said that it was because I was asking too many questions. However, I really appreciate this experience because it not only made me realize that my skills and abilities would not be suited to every different jobs, it also encouraged me to keep learning so that my abilities could be suited to more jobs.

You’ll need to create a password (密码) to do just about everything on the Web, such as checking your email, logging in WeChat and so on. And while it’s simpler to use a short, easy-to-remember password, this can also cause serious risks (风险) to your online safety. To protect yourself and your information, you’ll want to use passwords that are long, and difficult for someone else to guess, while still keeping them easy for you to remember.

A strong password is one that’s easy for you to remember but difficult for others to guess. Let’s take a look at some of the most important things to think when setting (设置) a password. First, never use personal information such as your name, user’s name, or email address. This type of information is often publicly available (可获得的), use a longer password. Your passwords should be at least six characters (符号) long or even longer. Then don’t use the same password for each account (账户). If someone discovers your password for one account, all of your other accounts will be in danger.

You can try to use numbers, symbols, and both capital (大写) and small letters (字母). You have to avoid using words that can be found in the dictionary. Like “swimming”, it would be a weak password. So random (随机的) passwords are the strongest.

Instead of writing your passwords on paper like books or notebooks where someone might find them, you can use a password manager (a kind of App) to keep them safely online. Password managers can remember and enter your password on different websites. That means you won’t have to remember longer passwords. So it is a good and safe way to keep your passwords.

32. The underlined word “this” refers to ________.

A. checking your email

B. banking online

C. logging in WeChat

D. using a short and easy password

33. According to the passage, “ _________ ” is the strongest password.

A. 20080618                   B. Swimming                  C. Sywi2008!                  D. Betty!

34. The last paragraph is mainly about ________.

A. when to keep your passwords

B. how to set safe passwords

C. when to remember passwords

D. how to keep passwords safely

35. The purpose of this passage is mainly to ________.

A. encourage people to check emails

B. help people set and keep safe passwords

C. stop people from using their personal information

D. tell people the differences between easy and strong passwords

2. B
