Every time we get on a plane, we’re asked to either turn off our phones or change them to flight mode—it’s for “security reasons”.
But according to The Conversation website, having to turn our 36 off on a plane is “a service issue, not a safety one”.
When we speak on our phones in the air, they can cause interference (干扰) to the aircraft’s radios. Pilot can hear this interference in their headphones. “It’s the same 37 you’ll be familiar ( 熟 悉 的 ) with, if you put your mobile too close to a speaker,” the Mirror noted. “It is not safety critical, but is annoying (烦人的) for sure.” Though speaking on a phone during a flight isn’t 38 , from the viewpoint of service, it isn’t still a good idea.
When we make or receive a call on the ground, we connect to a call tower that 39 all calls within an 80-kilometer radius (半径). As we move from place to place we are “handed on” to different cell towers.
As US scientist Sven Bilen 40 , for this system to work, there are “built-in” expectations ( 期 待 ): They shouldn’t be too many “handoffs”; people shouldn’t be traveling faster than car speeds and phone users should be close to the 41 .
If we were to make phone calls while we flew, however, none of these expectations would be met. And even 42 , our cellphones would stop working.
But now things are beginning to change. If we 43 can’t speak during a flight, we can use other phone functions. For example, Airbus A330 of Emirates Airlines (阿联酋航空) has inflight wifi to make passengers send and receive short messages in the air. In the future, as Bilen points out, it may be 44 for air travelers to make and receive calls freely.
The breakthrough could be “pico cells”, which are small cell towers on the phone itself. There would no longer be connections 45 between phones and the ground and therefore there would be no danger of disruption (破坏) to phone service.
One day, perhaps, we will be chatting in the air as much as we chat on the ground.

The oil paper umbrella is a traditional Chinese handicraft (手工艺品). It has a history of over 1, 000 years in China. In early Tang Dynasty, it was brought to Japan and Korea, so it was called the “Tang Umbrella”. Later oil paper umbrellas were brought to some other countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, and each had its own style. However, as steel-ribbed (钢骨的) umbrellas came out in the last century, the hand-made oil paper umbrellas became less used in daily life. They were turned into handicrafts for decorating things.
Yuhang in Hangzhou is famous for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made of paper, bamboo, a coating (涂层) of Tung oil. They need to take more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pasting (粘贴) paper and choosing painting designs. It takes at least a week to make per umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas were added to Intangible Cultural Heritage List (非物质文化遗产名录) of China.
A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I want to bring the art to life.” Liu said. He made the umbrellas better to meet the needs of young people. As the traditional paper was easy to break, he started to use a kind of thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed for 1, 000 times without breaking. He used a kind of lighter bamboo to make the umbrellas weigh less.
Now Liu hopes the art can be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students. He also takes part in activities in different places to show the art to more people.

As prices and building costs keep rising, the “do-it-yourself” trend (趋势) in the U. S. continues to grow.
“We needed furniture for our living room,” says John Ross, “and we just didn’t have enough money to buy it. So we decided to try making a few tables and chairs.” John got married(已婚的) six months ago, and like many young people these days, they are struggling(努力) to make a home at a time when the cost of living is very high. The Rosses took a 2-week course for $280 at a night school. Now they build all their furniture and make repairs around the house.
Jim Hatfield has three boys and his wife died. He has a full-time job at home as well as in a shoemaking factory. Last month, he received a car repair bill for $420. “I was very worried about it. Now I’ve finished a car repair course; I should be able to fix the car by myself.”
John and Jim are not unusual people. Most families in the country are doing everything they can to save money, so they can fight the high cost of living. Success does not belong to a select group of individuals (个人). Success belongs to those who are willing to go after it and try their best to do what they have to do. Here are some useful practical ways for you if you want to be a success.
Desire. Desire is the strong wish to achieve a goal. Without desire, you have nothing. Before you can run with desire, your goal must be plain, clear, and it must also be exciting.
Show up. Seventy percent of success in life is showing up. You can’t have a best seller, if you have never written a book. You can’t get your dream job, if you’re afraid to turn in an application. Showing up doesn’t guarantee (保证) success, but if you don’t show up, you won’t succeed.
Fail. Unless you’re willing to have a try, fail unhappily, and have another try, success won’t happen.
To have success, you have to do things the right way, but often the only way to do something right is to first fail at it. As Thomas J. Watson said, a simple formula (公式) for success is to double your rate of failure (失败). So welcome failure, become a student of failure, learn from failure, and soon you will succeed.
Work harder. Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day. Success is not about doing what the common person can’t do. It’s about doing what the common person is unwilling to do. And on a deeper level, it’s about creating habits that the common person is unwilling to create. It’s the habit of doing things with excellence that causes success.
Enjoy the journey. Success is a journey, not a destination (终点). Success is not a certain car or a certain house or a certain happy marriage. Success is the enjoyment of the journey. You have to enjoy the journey.
Someone once said, “Unless you change how you are, you will always have what you’ve got.” You have to change, you will change, you will succeed.
57.Which of the following is NOT mentioned (提及) in achieving success?
A.Good education. B.Working hard. C.Strong desire. D.Enjoying failure
58.What does the writer really mean by saying “Everyone runs, but everyone is not willing to run for an hour every day.”?
A.It’s not easy for people to develop their health.
B.Keeping working harder is necessary when you go after success.
C.You are sure to meet with some difficulty in your life.
D.Most people don’t want to spend too much time running.
59.What does the writer mostly want to tell us in the fourth paragraph?
A.Failure is the mother of success. B.Many hands make light work.
C.Every dog has its day. D.Actions speak louder than words.
60.The best title of the passage might be ________.
A.The Importance of Success B.The Meaning of Success

Thinking about visiting Antarctica? If you are, then there are some things that you should know about before you go. Penguin highways, biosecurity and whale alerts are just the beginning! So here are things that you need to know before visiting the seventh continent.
When it comes to visiting Antarctica, there is pretty much no chance of avoiding such an expensive expedition (远征). Cruises (航行) booked at the last minute can go for as little as $4,000 and luxury cruises can go for as much as $ 50,000.
When people have asked about how cold it is in Antarctica, they are always told that it very rarely gets below freezing, and on the non-windy days, you could easily get around the ship in no more than a T-shirt. Cold wind is much more of a factor than the temperature itself, so as long as your clothing is windproof, the cold really shouldn’t give you any trouble at all. More importantly, you need to respect the penguin highways. Yes, a penguin highway is exactly what it sounds like! The penguins follow the same paths up and down hills, resulting in discernible ( 可识别的) tracks in the snow that have been affectionately ( 亲切地 ) named “penguin highways”. These highways are the penguins favorite way of getting around, so it is important not to walk on or over them, and not to get too close.
A whale alert is exactly what you’d expect it to be. When whales are found by the ship, the captain will announce it over the loudspeaker to give anyone who wants to see the wildlife half a chance. Whale alerts can come at any hour of the day or night, so make sure you always have a battery and memory card in your camera.
Important 76 For Visiting Antarctica | |
High 77 | When it comes to visiting Antarctica, it’s 78 to avoid spending lots of money. Cruises booked can go for $4000 and luxury cruises will cost you as much as $50,000. |
The temperature | The temperature in Antarctica is very rarely low.
You could easily get around the ship in no more than a T-shirt when it 79 windy. As long as your clothing is windproof, the cold really shouldn’t 80 you at all. |
Penguin highways | What is more 81 is that you need to respect the penguin highways.
The penguins usually follow the 82 paths named “Penguin highways”. You’d better keep 83 from those highways. |
Whale alerts | You will hear the announcement over the loudspeaker when any whale is found by the ship.
Whale alerts can come 84 . 85 your camera well is a must. |
