What is the Chinese “yao”?
In many people’s minds, monsters, also called yao in China, usually look horrible and do bad things. But in the Chinese cartoon series Yao—Chinese Folktales(《中国奇谭》), they are different. The cartoon has been on Bilibili since January 1.
In the stories, yao is lovely, fun and mysterious(神秘的). They have their own lives just like humans. A little pig monster works hard in a monster company. A fox scholar(书生) creates a dreamy day for a man.
The cartoon has won many people’s hearts. It shows a different side of Chinese yao culture.”Mostly yao in China’s old stories is warm, kind and friendly,” said Zhang Yun, who wrote a book about China’s 1,080 kinds of yao.
People are afraid of yao because of their fear of the unknown world. For example, kids sometimes are afraid of things under the bed or behind the curtain. “Yao is humans’ imagination of unknown things,” said Chen Liaoyu, general director(总导演) of the cartoon. In one of the cartoon’s stories, a little child thinks a catfish(鲶鱼) is horrible. But later he sees people sell the fish like other foods. The fear is gone.

Last year, I signed up for(报名) a four-month program for teenagers in Mountain High School. I went there because hikes, art, and fields of corn sounded fun to me.
When I set out in August, I hugged my parents and said goodbye. “See you in December!” I said.
My parents were worried. It was because they knew me so well. They knew that I had trouble reaching out. They knew that I was shy and I made friends slowly.
My dad looked worriedly at me and my mom’s voice shook as she said, “You’re going to be just fine, baby girl.”
The first two weeks were difficult. I made half-hearted small talk at meals, and I cried in the shower. For me, being around people all the time was more tiring than a five-mile race. I was out of my comfort zone(舒适区), and I couldn’t go back.
One day during the third week, I spent two hours collecting corn with Dorey, one of my classmates. My feelings matched the darkening sky. I wanted to be alone. After a while, she asked, “Where are you from again?” Half an hour passed. “How many brothers or sisters do you have?” she asked.
Finally, my classmate said the three magic words in the English language: I LOVE READING. Soon I found myself talking about books I enjoyed reading. I started to relax. A few bricks(砖) fell down from my wall of shyness.
A few more fell. I started to reach out. The bricks fell and fell and fell. By the end of the program, I was different. I ran through the dining hall, I jumped on the chairs, I sang, and I made friends.
That is the wonderful thing about leaving your comfort zone: once you are out of it, it doesn’t take long to find the new normal. When I arrived, people tired me. When I left, I couldn’t stand leaving them.

A. Honest. B. Warm. C. Proud. D. Clever.
49.When did the writer start to relax?

50.What did the writer learn from the program?
A. The joy of leaving a comfort zone. B. The advantages of reading books.

A local man called Tao Zhenguo enjoys volunteering with his grandson, who was born during Beijing’s first Olympics 14 years ago.
As Tao Zhenguo prepared to work as a volunteer for the Beijing Olympics in 2008, he became a grandfather. His daughter gave birth to a baby boy, Guo Xiaoyu, just days before the opening ceremony in August. Tao was so happy about his new-born grandson, but he didn’t have much time to spend with Guo that month. He was very busy with his volunteer work.
Fourteen years later, the 77-year-old Tao is even happier because Guo has also become an Olympic volunteer. “He is indeed an Olympic boy now,” Tao says. Both the grandfather and grandson are volunteering at the Beijing 2022 Winter Olympics. They are helping with garbage sorting(分类), traffic guidance(指导) and information inquiries(查询) at the Olympic Village.
Guo says he learned a lot from his grandfather. He listened to Tao’s volunteer experience when he was a little child, and began to do community work with the help of his grandpa. But Guo is not just learning. He’s now also teaching his grandfather English.
Tao doesn’t speak English, but he is clear that “as an Olympic volunteer, I have to learn it to at least be able to communicate a bit with foreign guests”. “It’s never too late to learn,” Tao says. “I don’t expect(期待) to become an English-language master, but I hope that I can at least say ‘Welcome to Beijing’ when I meet with foreign players and guests.”
