This year, many kids’ movies have come out. With so many great ones to choose from, we’ve picked three of them for you. Let’s take a look together!

Orion and the Dark

《奥利安与黑暗》

Release Date: Feb 2, 2024

Orion has a great many fears—but he’s especially afraid of the dark. So you can imagine his surprise when an embodiment (化身) of the dark shows up to take him on an adventure to show him there’s nothing to be afraid of. The Netflix movie is based on a book by Emma Yarlett, but the script (剧本) was written by someone who knows a thing or two about writing movies about anxieties (焦虑): Charlie Kaufman, the writer behind Being John Malkovich.

Robot Dreams

《机器人之梦》

Release Date: May 31, 2024

This film, based on the comic by Sara Varon, received an Oscar nomination (提名) for Best Animated Feature. (It lost to The Boy and the Heron.) It’s about an anthropomorphic (拟人化的) dog who, to help with feeling lonely, orders a robot to be his friend. The lack (缺少) of words and overall sadness give the impression that it’s not exactly aimed at (以……为目标) kids, but the older ones might get into it.

Mufasa: The Lion King

《木法沙:狮子王》

Release Date: Dec 20, 2024

Barry Jenkins, the Oscar-nominated director of Moonlight, directs a prequel (前传) to The Lion King about Mufasa (voiced by Aaron Pierre) and his relationship with Scar (Kelvin Harrison, Jr). Don’t expect 2D animation similar to the original, though: This one will be done in a realistic-looking CGI (电脑成像技术) style, similar to the 2019 remake of The Lion King, and Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner even reprise (重新出演) their roles as Timon and Pumbaa.

11.Which movie won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature this year?

A.Orion and the Dark                          B.Robot Dreams

C.The Boy and the Heron                     D.Mufasa: The Lion King

12.What is the main theme of Robot Dreams?

A.A dog’s adventures.                           B.Dealing with loneliness.

Does life sometimes seem to be full of problems? How many times do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem,” or “I can’t get into the school team”? Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to to an amazing word yet (还、仍).

With this word, you can change everything. “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.”, “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible.

I once read about a school. After finding the old Pass/Fail system wasn’t helping students grow, the school tried a new way to mark students’ tests. Now students don’t see a big red F for Fail on their test paper if they don’t pass it. They see a “Not yet”. In this way, students feel that they are on a journey to become a better self. The test is not the end.

This kind of thinking is part of what we call “a growth mindset (成长思维)”. People with a growth mindset don’t keep their eyes on what they can’t do. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep trying till they do. They are not afraid of trouble and believe they can change for the better.

While other people have “a fixed mindset (固定思维)”. These people often keep their eyes on what they fail to do. They are always worried about not getting things right the first time and are ready to give up when things seem to go wrong. They don’t think they are able to change.

But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can learn to have a growth mindset. Remember that it all starts with questioning the things you believe about yourself. Stop believing that you can’t. Believe that you just can’t yet. Once you start doing this, you’ll find how powerful the small word is.

14.How does the writer lead to the topic? _______

A.By telling stories.

B.By giving facts.

C.By asking questions.

D.By showing results.

15.What can we learn from the passage? _______

A.Students can have a growth mindset by practising questioning.

B.People with a growth mindset may say “It isn’t good enough.”

C.Students feel they become a better self when going on a journey.

D.People with a fixed mindset may say “Mistakes help me learn better.”

16.The following sentence should be put in ______.

“Clear, it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.”

A.①            B.②                             C.③                          D.④

17.The writer writes this passage to _______.

A.advise thinking in a hopeful way

B.advise changing others’ mindsets

C.introduce how to use the word “yet”

D.introduce what different mindsets are like

The shopkeeper there, seeing that Andrew only bought newspapers, showed no respect (尊重) and was always angry with him. Every time Andrew went to buy newspapers, the shopkeeper either threw the newspaper or was rough when giving the change. He didn’t even look the old man straight in the eye.

One of Andrew’s friends was very angry with the shopkeeper. So he asked, “Andrew, since the shopkeeper treats you like that, why don’t you go to other places to buy newspapers?”

Andrew smiled at his friend and replied slowly, “If I get angry with him and go to another place to buy newspapers, I’ll have to take a detour (绕路). This will not only waste my time but also bring some trouble. Anyway, it’s his problem that he has bad manners. Why should I let the things he does change my mood (心情)?”

One day, a new shopkeeper came to the store. This new shopkeeper always greeted Andrew with a smile, and kindly gave him his newspapers. Andrew happily talked with the new shopkeeper together each time.

Don’t Let Anxiety Hold You Back from Living Your Dreams

Anxiety is the state of feeling nervous, worried or fearful. When you’re anxious, you may feel something bad is going to happen.

When you think of starting a new project or going into a group situation with people you don’t know, do you feel butterflies in your stomach? Do you come up with lots of reasons not to do fun but risky things like joining a hiking club or a volunteer organization? If these happen, it shows that you are probably anxious, and your anxiety will stop you from going after your dreams. Actually, anxiety feeds on avoidance and makes you less confident, while getting started and taking action help your anxiety go down. But where do you begin?

These suggestions below will let you be the master of your anxiety, rather than letting it master you.

◆ Don’t wait for your anxiety to go down

Your anxiety won’t go down on its own. However, when you take action towards your goals instead of considering what anxiety you have, you will build self-efficacy (自我效能) little by little—you begin to see yourself as someone who can take action and be successful even when you’re feeling anxious.

◆ Set a realistic goal that makes sense for you

We all have different personalities and preferences. We don’t all want to be lawyers, have hundreds of friends, or run marathons. Whatever you want, just figure out what is the simplest thing you can do to get started. Set your goal specifically, for example, “walk for 20 minutes three times next week”. You can’t climb a mountain all at once and you’re more likely to achieve your goal with inside motivation (动机) than when you’re just trying to please others.

◆ Trust the process (过程)

Faith (信仰) is the first step to take action. Even if you don’t have faith to begin with, faith will come if you just take that first step. The more you take action, the more likely you are to have some successes and begin to trust the process, I often start writing a blog post not knowing exactly what I’m going to write. Now I’ve understood that if I share messages with my readers sincerely, then the content will appear naturally and anxiety will reduce slowly.
