新素材 新故宫 The Palace Museum is one of the must-see places in Beijing and has millions of cultural relics(遗产) inside its walls. However, the museum can only show a small part of its relics to the public. Experts(专家) can’t fix as many cultural relics as they want. And more importantly, the museum can’t work well if the number of visitors goes over 80,000 every day. Why? Because there is not enough room inside the museum!
For nearly ten years, the Palace Museum has planned on its new building—a second home for the cultural relics, a second office for the experts, and a second museum for people to visit. Thirty kilometres away from the Palace Museum, the new museum will include places for the display, restoration and storage(展览、修复和贮存) of the cultural relics. And there is even a garden. Experts can better work on the protection and restoration of the cultural relics. And more visitors will be able to see the relics and learn more about our culture and history.
Although the new museum looks like a traditional Chinese building and has similar colours to the Palace Museum, it is modern and environmentally friendly. For example, it can save a lot of energy: The walls on the south side can let in a lot of air during the summer and keep it cool; during the winter, the walls on the north side can keep the cold air out and help the building stay warm.
The construction(施工) of the new Palace Museum started in December 2022, and it may be open to the public in 2025. The Palace Museum will be 100 years old then. The new museum will surely be a great birthday gift for it.

People can travel without much money by staying in other people’s houses. Sometimes the travellers may sleep for a few nights on other people’s sofa s for free. This way of travelling is called sofa surfing.
There is a sofa surfing organization that connects(联系) travellers all around the world. Members of it can find a place to stay when they travel or share their homes and hometowns with travellers from other places. In this way strangers can help strangers to make the world a better place.
The organization has millions of members all over the world and it has changed the way of travelling forever. Jamie from Australia has travelled in this way all over the world. “When I travelled before, I used to find a cheap hotel to save money, but now I stay in really nice houses and apartments. The best thing isn’t the free living place but the people you meet. A sofa surfing host, the owner of the house, will usually cook you a meal which helps break the ice. Then they’ ll often introduce you to their friends and take you to the places they enjoy. Sofa surfing allows you to experience a country and its culture.”

The idea of travelling the world for free has even been made into a TV show. Alex and Zsolt from the US set out with no money at all. They depended on social networking websites to ask for help. They said, “Wherever we went, we were always provided with food. All over the world, food is a common bond(纽带).” They travelled sixteen different countries and the results were turned into the TV show Around the World for Free.

文化意识跨文化交流 Pace Melody from France has lived in China for 13 years. As the daughter-in-law of a family from Hunan, Melody often visits her husband’s hometown in Yiyang, Hunan. It was there that she fell in love with the Chinese countryside for its friendly villagers, local food, and beautiful scenery.
With sweet air and fresh vegetables, the village life in Hunan brought Melody a deep sense of comfort and happiness. She is thankful to be welcomed by her Hunan family members, who are very close to her. “My mother-in-law often tells me that I am like her daughter,” she said.

Melody is amazed by how quickly the villages in China are developing. Before, there were no highways near their village, but now there are good roads and buses that come often. The southern part of Dongping town has changed a lot. It used to be a remote(偏远的) and mountainous area, but now it’s a busy place with lots of people.
