I noticed a dad and his son at the park. His son wasn’t able to communicate, but he seemed satisfied with sitting in the sand. The dad explained to me that his son could only make some sounds. The boy had been in speech therapy for years. After so much time in therapy, the boy was able to maintain(保持)eye contact for a few seconds and the father was delighted by the achievement! He told me how expensive the therapies for his son’s specific needs were and what a pleasure it was to see all of the years of hard work pay off. The father and son connected, and those few seconds of eye contact meant the world to that dad!

As we talked about therapy, the dad shared with me that his goal for his boy was to someday be able to go for ice cream together. He said his father used to take him out for ice cream and he hoped he could do the same with his child. Suddenly, the son stopped putting his fingers in the sand, looked at his father and said, “Hi. ” Seconds later, the boy went back into his own world. The dad wanted to say something, but he couldn’t. His love for this boy was so great that the words would not come. But what did come were tears. Those tears showed how proud he was of his son. A father loves his child more than words will ever be able to express.

Although they were strangers to me, I am honored(荣幸的)to have shared in this precious celebration of achievement in that boy’s young life. I hope someday they will be able to go for ice cream and have a beautiful father and son outing. This event touched me deeply and made me consider my relationship with my own father. I hope that as they communicate further, more and more memories will be created for them to share. I believe the feelings held by all great fathers—their hard work, their love, their pride, and their tears of love—are all the same.

29.What do we know about the boy?

A.His eyes were hurt.                           B.He loved going to the park.

C.He couldn’t make any sound.             D.He made progress through therapy.

30.How did the father feel after his son say “hi” to him?

A.Sad.              B.Proud.                 C.Worried.              D.Impatient.

31.What does the passage mainly talk about?

A.A father’s unconditional love is touching.

B.Not all of the parents care about their children’s achievements.

C.Good relationship will be formed between father and son.

D.Disabled children will be given more attention.

32.Which of the following would be the best title for the passage?

A.Experiencing Speech Therapy!

B.Maintaining Eye Contact with Father.

C.Feeling a Father’s Love!

D.Having a Beautiful Father and Son Outing.

C

Adopting Animals (领养动物)

Would you like to adopt an animal? Although this sounds very unusual, some children have done just this. The Natural Zoo has given people the chance to adopt animals by paying for all of its food for one year. One of the animals that needed parents was a young tiger named Brocky. The people at the zoo said that it would cost about $900 a year for the food for Brocky.

Not many boys and girls have $900 to spend. That is why several hundred children and grown-ups each have sent a little money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food. Some children sent in only a quarter because that was all the money they had. Other children sent in more money than that.

Since so many people sent money to the zoo to help pay for Brocky’s food, he now will be able to eat as much as he wants. Brocky surely must be a happy tiger to know that he has so many adopted parents. Many children must also be happy to know that they have helped to feed him. It really will be thrilling for those children to go to the Natural Zoo to visit their adopted tiger Brocky.

33.Brocky is _______.

A.an animal zoo                                     B.an adopted child

C.a tiger without children’s love               D.a tiger in need of adoption

34.Children will be _______ if they go to the zoo to visit the tiger Brocky.

A.frightened        B.excited and happy   C.nervous                  D.surprised

35.With so many people’s money, Brocky now can _______.

A.play with many toys                            B.live without being hungry

C.eat meat every day                               D.have an air-conditioned room to live in

36.We can infer(推断)from the passage that _______.

A.zoos are too poor to feed the animals     B.there are too many animals in the zoo

C.many people are kind to animals           D.children love animals better than adults do

D

Living in a foreign culture can be exciting, but it can also be confusing(令人迷惑的). A group of Americans who taught English in other countries recently discussed their experiences. They decided that miscommunications were always possible, even over something as simple as “yes” and “no”.

On her first day in Micronesia, an island in the Pacific, Lisa thought people weren’t paying any attention to her. The day was hot. She went into a store and asked, “Do you have cold drinks?” The woman there didn’t say anything. Lisa repeated the question. Still the woman said nothing. She later learned that the woman had answered her: She had raised her eyebrows(眉毛), which in Micronesia means “yes”.

Jan remembered an experience she had in Bulgaria, a country in Europe. She went to a restaurant that was known for its cabbage. She asked the waiter, “Do you have cabbage today?” He nodded his head. Jan waited, but the cabbage never came. In that country, a nod means “no”.

Tom had a similar problem when he arrived in India. After explaining something in class, he asked his students if they understood. They answered with many different nods and shakes of the head. He thought some people had not understood, so he explained again. When he asked again, they did the same thing. He soon found out that his students did understand. In India, people nod and shake their heads in different ways depending on where they come from. You have to know where a person is from to understand whether they mean “yes” or “no”.

37.These Americans teaching English in other countries found that they ________.

A.should go abroad for vacations

B.needed to learn foreign languages

C.should often discuss their experiences

D.had problems with communications

38.People in Micronesia show “yes” by ________.

A.nodding heads                                     B.raising eyebrows

C.shaking heads                                      D.saying “no”

39.Which of the following is TRUE according to(根据) this passage?

A.In Bulgaria, nodding heads means no.

B.Jan taught English on a Pacific island.

C.Lisa was trying to buy some cabbage.

D.In India, only shaking heads means “yes”.

40.The passage is mainly about ________.

A.body language in foreign restaurants

B.class discussion in Indian schools

C.miscommunication in different cultures

D.English teaching in other countries

With a hard job in a factory, he doesn’t find much time to visit his hometown. “I    52    return home at least once a year, but I haven’t been back for three years now,” he says. Many people like Zhong Wei are interested in    53    their hometown have changed. Besides large hospitals and new roads, the government has also built new schools and sent teachers from the cities to help. Zhong Wei thinks such changes are good, and he also knows that his hometown cannot stay the same. However, some things will never change. “In my hometown, there was a big old tree    54    the school. It is still there and has become a symbol(象征)of the place. 五、阅读填空(共20小题;每小题1, 满分20分)

A)请认真阅读下面短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中小题的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。

注意:每个空格只填1个单词。请将答案填写在答题卡相应横线上。

When I went to England, I enjoyed my stay. But I noticed so many different traditions.

For example, you usually shake hands with people when you meet them for the first time. But after that, you can just say hello. You must say Mr and Mrs when you speak to older people, but you can use first names with your friends.

One day we visited some friends and had tea. Tea is not just a drink but a light meal at around 4 p.m.. You can’t have tea the meal after 4:30 p.m.. We ate sandwiches and a large fruit cake. You can only drink tea at a tea party, not coffee or juice. And you must drink tea with milk. You must pour the tea, then the milk—you can’t put the milk in first, then the tea.

In buses or trains, the other passengers (乘客) are very quiet, and you mustn’t talk too loudly. It’s very different from China! In some trains you can’t even use your mobile phones! And you don’t often hear people shouting in the street.

I was very lucky—I even went to a wedding. It was very different from a Chinese wedding. For example, the man and the woman can’t see each other the night before the wedding. Then the woman mustn’t arrive at the church on time but a few minutes late. And at the party after the wedding, the woman throws her flowers over her shoulder. The girl who catches them will be next to get married! It was all very strange but it was great fun!

B)请根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词,并将答案填写在答题卡相应位置上。

With the increasing population and cars, many countries w   66    their fuel or petrol (汽油) will run out soon, so fuel price has risen up to n   67    10 yuan per litre (升). As a result, the cost of running a petrol-based car becomes higher and higher.

Have you ever thought of b   68    an electric (电) car? Now it’s clear that we all need to act on our empty wallet as well as s   69    climate (气候) change, however, will people really be ready to make changes in their lives? Can we really make our e   70    greener than it is now?

If you want to buy an electric car, which would you like? That is a question. It all d   71    on your personal taste. On May 28, 2022, so many Electronic smart cars made by Chinese auto companies s   72    at Greater Bay Area Auto Show in Shenzhen, Guangdong province, which caught lots of young people’s eyes.

However, Electric cars aren’t perfect just yet. It may t   73    eight hours or more to charge (充电) a car for only 300 km of driving. Many people think it a waste of time. Price is a problem, too. Electric cars cost much. The good news is that electric-car technology (技术) is getting better. As it does, the prices of this kind of cars are going down.

In order to charge the car more easily, our Chinese government is trying to build more charging stations around the country. And it will be a good c   74    to work out the problem of charging on a long-distance trip.

Because of better batteries (电池), last month (in May, 2022), 51.2% of all new car registrations (登记) were electric cars. Among them, Chinese auto companies made a great contribution (贡献). So the change is starting to happen. It is safe to say that Chinese auto industry is overtaking in the corner.

Now car-makers are looking for other ways to make the car cheaper. Then more people will use electric cars and we will have a clean and green world in the near f     75     . Maybe, you can give them an opportunity, especially those made in China.
