“There’s thousands of dollars in the box!” said his friend.

“It must have been left here by Murrel,” said Injun Joe.

“What will we do with it?”

“We’ll take it to my hideout(隐匿处).”

“Number one or number two?”

“Number two, under the cross.”

Then Injun Joe and his friend saw some tools in the corner and decided to go upstairs. But the stairs broke when Injun Joe stood on them! So the two men left the house and went towards the river. Tom went home as quickly as he could.

Cait, 11, was trying to fall asleep when her 8-year-old brother, Doug, came into her room. He looked around, but seemed really out of it. Then Doug went back into the hallway and stood there looking straight up at the light. This was really strange. Cait didn’t know what to do. Just then, Cait’s father appeared and explained Doug was sleepwalking.

Not all sleep is the same every night. We experience some deep, quiet sleep and some active sleep, which is when dreams happen. You might think sleepwalking would happen during active sleep but a person isn’t physically active during active sleep. It usually happens in the first few hours of sleep in the period called deep sleep.

The truth is that not all sleepwalkers walk. Some simply sit up or stand in bed or act like they’re awake when, in fact, they’re asleep! Most, however, do get up and walk around for a few seconds or for as long as half an hour.

Sleepwalkers’ eyes are open, but they don’t see the same way they do when they’re awake. They tend to go back to bed on their own and won’t remember it in the morning.

You also might have heard that sleepwalkers can get frightened if you wake them up. That’s true, so what do you do if you see someone sleepwalking? You should call for a grown-up who can lead the person back to bed. And once the sleepwalker is tucked back in bed, it’s time for you to get some sleep, too!

Once there were many thousands of Gourma Desert (沙漠) elephants in Mali, a country in West Africa. Now, there are fewer than four hundred.

Why did the number of the elephants drop so quickly? On the one hand, the elephants’ main lake, their only water source (来源), dried up. On the other hand, the land which the elephants lived on was overused by humans.

To protect the elephants’ living environment, the Mali Elephant Project (MEP) was started in 2007. MEP met with local people and helped them make rules of using land and water. As a result, the situation became better and there was more food, forest and grassland.

However, from 2012 to 2016, poaching (偷猎) and illegal trade in the elephants increased rapidly. Eighty-three elephants were lost in 2015 alone, and another fifty-one elephant were killed in 2016. “If this situation goes on, all the Gourma elephants will be killed by 2020,” said a member of MEP.

Luckily, the voice of MEP was heard. More organizations (组织) have joined together to educate the local people that trading elephants is against the law. My dear boys and girls, good morning. Today I’m going to talk to you, about my understanding of learning history.

Many of you may think it is a terrible thing to study history. You may often wonder why we students should study something that has nothing to do with our own lives. If you think that way, I should say you are far from the truth.

In fact, if we study history, we can learn quite a lot about personal stories and events (事件)of people just like us. The people who came before us helped build and develop the country we are living in. Their ideas often solved many of our problems and troubles. Studying the past helps us to understand what our ancestors'(祖先)lives were like. And it also helps us to see how their experiences have shaped our own life.

To be honest,   ▲   . Some of what we study in history helps us understand the mistakes of the past. And these mistakes will help people not to do the same wrong things. People often learn from the past to have a better future.

Whether we like the subject of history or not, we must understand the importance of the events and the people who came before us. Our ancestors’ decisions have influenced our own life. Similarly, the decisions of our own generation(一代人)will finally influence those who come after us. In this only way, the world is truly connected.

History is not just a study of the past. History is the study of people, places, and events that can influence the future.

Now do you still think studying history is a sad thing? Or do you have any doubt about learning history? If you have any question, just feel free to ask.

24 Which of the following can be put in the     ▲     in Paragraph 4?

A. the mistakes of the past won’t help us.

B. I don’t like the idea of learning history

C. it is not easy to learn the subject of history

D. not everything that happened in the past is good

25. According to Paragraph 5, the decisions of our generation will ______________.

A. show what is happening to us                   B. build and develop our country

C. influence the people in the future                D. help understand the people in the past

26. The writer wrote the passage to ___________________.

A. introduce some important people in history

B. develop students’ interest in learning history

C. explain different people’s understanding of history

D. show the relationship between the past and the future

Recently children have been told to buy traditional alarm clocks instead of mobile phones to wake them up in the morning. Schools will advise pupils to turn off mobile phones or iPads in the evening to have enough sleep.

Researchers from a charity say that using internet-connected devices(装置)in the evening can prevent children getting more rest. Moreover, they suggest that school children should invest in a real alarm clock to make sure that they get a good night’s sleep and arrive at school on time.

. The result is that 40% pupils in secondary schools can now hardly get on well without these devices. About two-thirds of pupils have a habit of taking mobile phones to bed at night.

. The study also shows that girls are more likely to be attracted by mobile phones than boys, and often use the Internet to talk to friends by social networking websites, such as Facebook and Twitter. One girl aged 12 said, “I have been told that I am addicted(上瘾的)to the Internet, and prefer being online to being with other people.”

. A girl of 13 told researchers, “I can’t imagine if someone takes my iPad away. I walk around the house with it even though its’ not turned on. I just like being with it.” Another girl added, “Sometimes I can’t sleep without using the mobile phone at night.”

. The charity, which was set up to promote(推动)iPads in the classroom, has now given five suggestions to protect children from being affected by electronic(电子的)devices.
