In a small village, a very sick girl, Maggie, was found by the roadside. The villagers felt pity for the poor child.
“Take her to the poorhouse,” a villager suggested.
“The poorhouse is a sad place for a sick and helpless child,” answered another.
They discussed for a while but still no one seemed willing to take her.
Finally, Joe Thompson, a kind man, couldn’t leave Maggie behind. He carried her home gently.
As he got home, Jane, his childless, ill-tempered (易怒的) wife, angrily questioned, “What did you bring her here for?”
“She is too weak to walk,” replied Joe. “I will carry her to the poorhouse tomorrow and the guardians (管理人) there must be seen first.”
“Why not get the whole thing off your hands tonight?”
“Keep this poor child for a single night, please.” begged Joe, voice shaking, tears hidden. Jane didn’t answer, but a soft feeling rose in her heart.
“Treat her nicely,” said Joe. “Think of the loneliness, pain and sadness in her coming life.” Jane went quietly into the room where Maggie was in. Joe didn’t follow. He noticed that Jane’s attitude (态度) had changed. She sat by Maggies bed, talking kindly to her. Maggie’s eyes were fixed upon Jane. The little girl’s expression was sad yet thankful.
“What are you going to do with Maggie?” Jane asked after supper.
“You knew she was to go to the poorhouse,” replied Joe.
Jane looked strangely at Joe and her eyes dropped.
Early the next morning, Jane said to Joe, “Let’s keep her a day or two longer. She is so weak and helpless.”
Actually, Joe never saw the guardians at all. For within a week, Jane was so kind to Maggie that she would rather live in the poorhouse herself than send Maggie there. At the same time, Maggie brought happiness to their lives in return. Their home was filled with laughter and love.

Many of the habits we keep with us throughout our lives are learned in childhood. For parents, this means it’s important to encourage children to be physically active because physical activities help improve healthy growth and build strong bones. Then what should parents do?
Even though children often have lots of energy, they are not patient enough. Children get the most benefit (益处) from physical activities when adults help them discover the fun of them. Physical activities for children should change frequently enough so that children won’t find them boring. If taking children on a walker or a bicycle ride, change the route to give the kids something to look forward to.
Children learn many habits from their parents. If they see you enjoying exercises, they’ll learn to regard it as a healthy and fun part of the day. If, however, children see their parents spending their evenings and weekends in front of TV or sitting at a computer, they’ll learn to see this as normal and follow their habits, even without knowing it.
For many adults, spending too much time in a car rather than walking or bicycling leads to poor health, the same is true for children. Walking or cycling to school or friends’ houses is a good way for children to get exercise, have fun and learn independence. If you have concerns (忧虑) about children walking or biking alone, why not join them?
Parents don’t have to do it alone in helping kids stay active. Other parents can help to organize active play for children, while schools and community groups organize sports teams, sports clubs, dance classes and other physical activities. Raising healthy kids can be easier and more rewarding when it’s a teamwork.
36.Why should parents change the route of kids’ walking or bicycle ride?
A.To keep their children safe. B.To discover a new route.
C.To make children never bored. D.To keep themselves healthy.
37.Why are TV and computers mentioned in Paragraph 3?
A.To show parents should set an example. B.To show parents are busy with their work.
C.To show they can teach children many things. D.To show they play a role in children’s lives.
38.Children can get the benefit from ________.
A.sitting at a computer B.following all parents’ habits
C.spending their evenings in front of TV D.walking or cycling to school or friends’ houses
