In my childhood, my mother spent her evening hours doing something for someone else. Sometimes she knitted(编织) hats for babies, and at other times, she cooked chicken soup for sick neighbors. Therefore, I wasn’t surprised when one evening my mother announced she had undertaken a new project.
“I am going to telephone seniors,” said my mother. “Every night? But you don’t even know these people.” “It doesn’t matter,” she said. “What’s important is that I listen.” I was sixteen years old and couldn’t understand why my mother was willing to spend her evenings talking to strangers. She had friends and my two older sisters to call if she felt lonely. “They will talk your ear off. Some people didn’t even stop to catch breath,” I said.
My attitude didn’t stop my mother’s enthusiasm for the project. That evening, I listened as she asked the woman on the other line about her day and what she had eaten for dinner. When she finished the call, I said, “Why do you care whether she had cookies or rice pudding for dessert?” My mother said, “I’m the only person she talked to today.”
It took me more than thirty years to fully understand the meaning of that statement. Now, as my mother is nearing eighty, I find myself thinking about those nightly calls she used to make. I am often the only person who telephones my mother, and sometimes I’m the only person she speaks to all day. I ask her what she cooked for dinner, but mostly I just listen as she describes a walk she took, or how her dog Lucky stole foods from the refrigerator. I realize that my mother’s calls were life lines, which ensured housebound seniors to keep in touch with the world. Without her, their world would have been empty.
14.What is the mother’s purpose of calling the seniors?
A.To improve their living conditions. B.To know what they eat for dinner.

D.They will make you feel really satisfied.
16.Why did the author change his/her attitude towards mother’s call?
A.Because the author is becoming older.
B.Because the author’s mother is becoming older.
C.Because the author started to do the same thing.
D.Because the author realized the value of her mother’s efforts.
17.What is the suitable title for the passage?
A.Call your parents often B.Mother’s evenings
C.Mother’s new project D.Nightly calls, lifeline calls
C
It was last January, when I’d just finished a charity activity and was on the train back home, that I put down my phone and started writing thank-you notes to people who had helped.
When I got off the train, I felt amazingly good. The next day, I wrote more thank-yous and felt good again. I suddenly had the idea: Why not keep on doing this for every day of the year?
To keep on task, I decided to pick out a different theme for each month. January was charity. February would be neighbors. And I thought of a number of names right away: the owner of our local bookstore, who let me and my little son in before the store opened; our babysitter, who took good care of our kids; …
While writing the notes, I realized how often I had spent my time on the phone appreciating(欣赏)other people’s lives. Writing thank-you notes allowed me to do something different, paying more attention to my own life.
In the following months, I wrote to my friends, doctors, teachers and parenting role models. In July, my “food” month, I wrote to Julie, who used to cook at my favorite restaurant. It went like this:
Dear Julie,
Thank you for hosting and cooking beautiful and thoughtful food. Jake and I never forget when you sent out biscuits shaped into the number VI for our sixth anniversary(周年纪念日). We talk about it every year.
Thank you. We miss you.
Love,
Gina
I was happy to receive a note back from her. Julie replied, “I don’t think I’ve ever received such a touching letter before. I’m undergoing a hard life change right now, and this helps.”
On December 31, I wrote my last card to Jake, my husband, and our two kids. And I took a picture of us, so I could remember the feeling welling up inside me. Thankfulness.
18.What does the underlined word “undergoing” mean?
A.Go down. B.Go through. C.Go against. D.Go beyond.
19.How did Julie most probably feel after reading the note from Gina?
A.Shy and surprised. B.Pleased and relaxed.
C.Nervous and excited. D.Moved and encouraged.
20.What might be the theme of the December notes?
A.Family. B.Photos. C.Holidays. D.Community.
21.What did Gina get by doing her task according to the passage?
A.Many thanks from her neighbors. B.More time to appreciate her own life.
C.More help from people around her. D.Happy moments to be with her friends.

Along with firewood, rice, oil, salt, sauce and vinegar, tea is considered one of the seven necessities for life in China. Now, it has also won global recognition as a shared cultural treasure of mankind.
On Nov. 29, Chinese traditional tea processing skills and their related social practices were added to the UNESCO intangible cultural heritage (非物质文化遗产) list. Since ancient times, Chinese people have been planting, picking, making and drinking tea.
