They left the busy streets and went to a part of the town Scrooge never visited. It was a terrible place. The streets were dirty, and the smell was very bad. The houses and shops were of the poorest kind. The people were all thin, dirty, and they looked very ill. Everything was ugly.

They came to where an old man sat. He was selling dirty pieces of cloth, smelly old bones, and all kinds of old and useless things. As they watched, two old women and an old man, equally dirty, smelly, and ugly, came into the shop. They carried large bags.

“Come and sit by the fire,” the shopkeeper said. “Tell me what you have to sell me.”

“Nothing a dead man will miss,” the first woman said with a nasty (让人讨厌的) laugh.

“If he wanted to keep them after he was dead, why wasn’t he a good man when he was alive? If he was, he would have someone to look after him. He would not die alone.”

“That’s very true,” said the second woman, putting a few clothes on the floor. “He got the death he deserved.” She pointed at the clothes. “What will you give me for those, Joe?” She asked the shopkeeper, adding, “I did no wrong taking them from the dead man’s house.”

The shopkeeper looked at everything the woman wanted to sell him and put a price on it. Then he added everything up. The final amount was very small.

“That’s not much,” the woman said.

“Take it or leave it,” the shopkeeper said. “I won’t pay a penny (便士) more.”

I was 11 years old standing outside in just my underwear while I watched the house that I grew up burning to the ground.

A few minutes earlier I was in bed when my grandma’s scream woke me up. A fire had broken out her room and woke her. Hearing her, my older brother jumped into action, running from room to room quickly waking everyone in the house. The house, however, was over 50 years old and made of wood. Before we could do anything, the fire burned’ it out. Luckily, we all ran outside before the fire took hold of every room.

I stood there shivering (发抖): I watched helplessly while my mom cried and my dad sighed (叹气). I wondered what was going to happen to us now that we lost all of our things.

The things that matter aren’t things. I saw my older brother running across the bridge near our house to get help. I saw my oldest brother who was on his walking stick standing unsteadily on one leg. I saw my grandma and dad wrapped in each other’s arms and my mom holding our little dog. I realized at that moment that we were all alive. Everything that was meaningful survived the fire. Our lives would continue. We would all be around to love each other for many years to come. And that was all that mattered.

I still think of that fire in the night. It helped me to become who I am today. It showed me for the very first time what is truly meaningful in this life. It helped me to learn that the love we share is far more important than the things we own.

Live your life for the things that matter, not for the things you own. Love others. Let the fire inside of you make this world a warmer place.

32.What can we know from Paragraph 1 and Paragraph 2?

C.The fire happened in an early morning.       D.All of us tried to put out the fire.

33.At the beginning of which paragraph can we put the sentence “As I looked around, though, I realized something for the first time.”?

A.Paragraph 2      B.Paragraph 3            C.Paragraph 4            D.Paragraph 5

34.What does the underlined phrase “took hold of” probably mean?

A.entered            B.burned                   C.caught                    D.influenced

35.Which sentence best shows the central theme (主题) in the passage?

A.We were helpless because we had lost all of our things.

B.Everything that was meaningful had survived the fire.

C.The fire helped me to become the person who I am today.

D.The love we share is far more important than what we own.

①Many people like going on holiday. It’s a good chance to relax, visit new places and see new things each other. But while planning a trip, you have to decide whether you want to travel with family or friends, or just alone.

②Traveling with family can be very cheap or even free, if parents pay. However, there may be many arguments. One friend told me that both she and her sister were in tears after arguing on holiday. ③Traveling with friends would be fun. When you are traveling with friends, you do more different things than you do with family. It is a way to strengthen (加强) a friendship. You can learn more about your friends. You can become closer to each other. But ________ if you go on holiday with your friends. It is normal for you to have different budgets (预算). You have to think about what is the best way to spend your money. Besides, there is also a lot of compromise (妥协) while you’ re planning where to stay and what to eat.

④When it comes to choosing whom to travel with, there is another choice: Traveling alone. Traveling alone has advantages (优点) over traveling with other people. For example, you do not have to compromise on your budget. You can choose what you want to do, and it’s easier for you to make new friends.

⑤Of course, traveling alone is not always good. Sometimes you may feel lonely and bored. And, when you want to go to the toilet at the bus station or airport, there is nobody to look after your things.
