What Are Clouds?
A Cloud is made of water drops or ice crystals floating (漂浮) in the sky. There are many kinds of cloud. Clouds are of great importance to Earth’s weather.
The sky can be full of water. But most of the time you can’t see the water. The drops of water are too small to see. They have turned into a gas called water vapor. As the water vapor goes higher in the sky, the air goes cooler. The cooler air causes the water droplets (微滴) to start to stick to things such as bits of dust, ice or sea salt.
Clouds get their names in two ways. One way is by where they are found in the sky. Some clouds are high up in the sky. Low clouds form closer to Earth’s surface. In fact, low clouds can even touch the ground. These clouds are called fog. Middle clouds are found between low and high clouds.
Another way clouds are named is by their shape. Cirrus clouds (卷云) are high clouds. They look like feathers. Cumulus clouds are middle clouds. These clouds look like giant cotton balls in the sky. Stratus clouds are low clouds. They cover the sky like bed sheets.
Most of the water in clouds is in very small droplets. The droplets are so light that they float in the air. Sometimes those droplets join with other droplets. Then they turn into larger drops. When that happens, gravity (重力) causes them to fall the Earth. We call the falling water drops “rain”. When the air is colder, the water may form snowflakes instead. Freezing rain, sleet or even hail can fall from clouds.
Clouds are important for many reasons. Rain and snow are two of those reasons. At night, clouds reflect heat and keep the ground warmer. During the day, clouds make shade that can keep us cooler. Studying clouds helps people have a better understanding of Earth’s weather. People use satellites in space to study clouds.

Four kinds of friends
I once believed that a friend is a friend “all the way”. Now I have changed my ideas about friendships.
Friends of convenience(便利). They can be the people who live next door or the mothers of our children’s closest friends. They will help us when we need it. They will look after our cats when we go on holiday. But we don’t ever get too close or tell too much. We keep our public face and emotional(情感的) distance, which means that we’ll talk about being overweight but not about being happy or sad. However, people still feel these friendships valuable(珍贵的) to them.
Special-interest friends. These friendships aren’t deeply personal or emotional. Their value lies in some shared interest, so we may have an office friend, a tennis friend, or even a shopping friend.
Historical Friends. We all have a friend who knew us well when…, maybe we were back in the second grade of primary school, when our family lived in that two-room flat downtown. He or she was the first, the only friend we told our secrets to.
The years have gone by, and we have gone different ways. We have little in common(共同)now, but we are still a personal part of each other’s past. We know how we looked before our teeth were straightened, and our getting together helps us remember an earlier part of ourselves, which is important and never lost.
Cross-generational(代) friends. These are friendships that from across generations. I have in my own life a precious(珍贵的) friend, a woman of 65, who is wise, who listens well, and who represents(代表) not only an ideal mother to me but also the person I’d like to be when I grow up.
Best friends, I believe, totally love, support and trust each other.
11 of friends | Descriptions of friends |
Friends of convenience | They can be the 12 or the mothers of our children’s closest friends.
They can help us when we are in 13 . Though we don’t talk about emotional topics, this doesn’t mean that there isn’t any value to be found in these friends. |
Special-interest friends | We usually 14 some interests with our special-interest friends, so we may have an office friend, a tennis friend, or even a shopping friend. |
15 friends | This kind of friendship was usually formed when we were 16 . Although we don’t have 17 in common now, we are still a personal part of each other’s past. Our getting together reminds us of each other’s happy old days. |
Cross-generational friends | Cross-generational friends usually aren’t from the 18 generations. A friend like this may represent a(an) 19 mother or the person I’d like to be when I grow up. |
Conclusion: Best friends need to love, 20 and trust each other totally. |

Love animals and STOP hurting them
In February 2021, Chen Kaiyin from Beijing paid 2, 000 yuan and “adopted(领养)” a red panda at Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo. The zoo would use the money to buy food for its animals and to pay for their medical care.
As for Chen, she could get a certificate(证书)and learn about the panda’s daily life online. She can go to the zoo for free. She can also have the chance to feed the animal and clean its living space.
Online adoption is one of the ways the Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo gets help to get through hard times. More than 80 percent of the zoo’s income(收入)comes from visitors buying tickets. But visitor numbers went down greatly because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
The adoption has worked well with people’s warm support. About 150 animals have been adopted so far.
Many zoos have also faced the same kind of problems during the pandemic. However, some of them have come up with new ideas to raise money. For example, Shanghai Wildlife Park livestreams(网上直播)every day to show how the animals live. Millions of people watch them. Beijing Zoo has brought out ice creams in the shape(形状)of its animals. It also makes toys and Rubik’s cubes(魔方)with the image(形象)of tigers.
These new ways to raise money make people rethink what roles(角色)zoos play. Shen Zhijun, the head of the Nanjing Hongshan Forest Zoo, said modern zoos should no longer be places for visitors to just see animals. Zoos can also teach people how to protect animals. “Adoption” is one way for more people to join in and know more about animals. This helps with animal protection.

Imagine walking into a movie theater without being greeted by the smell of popcorn. It’s hard to believe, isn’t it? For many people, popcorn goes hand in hand with movies. They can’t have one without the other. But how did this happen?
The relationship (关系) between the two is younger than you may think. In the mid-1800s, popcorn was already a popular snack in the USA.Vendors (小贩) sold it on the streets. People, especially kids, loved this street food. In the early 1900s, vendors started to sell popcorn outside movie theaters.
However, theater owners were against popcorn. They believed it would make the experience of watching a movie less enjoyable. Eating it would make too much noise during the silent movies.
About 20 years later, when movies added sounds, the eating noise problem went away. More and more people went to the movies. Some of them even secretly took popcorn into the theaters. Later, more movie theaters opened. People were allowed (允许) to eat popcorn in some of the theaters while they were watching movies.
In the 1930s, the theater owners realized that people didn’t need to buy popcorn from street vendors. Because popcorn was easy to make, they could make and sell it on their own. They did that and the smell of popcorn drew more people to their theaters. The owners made a lot of money, and people enjoyed themselves at the movies.
Today, popcorn is still an important part of the movie-going experience. Roles, a man who once ate three bags of popcorn, said, “People come to theaters sometimes just for the popcorn. They don’t even care what is playing!”
