Scientists have calculated(计算) that almost 2,000 nearby stars—and hundreds of possible Earth-like planets around those stars—have had a clear view of Earth during human civilization(人类文明时期).

If any of those planets have life, someone out there could find that there’s life back here based on oxygen in our atmosphere(大气), or by radio waves from human sources.

One way humans look for planets is by watching them pass in front of the star they are orbiting(环绕), which dims(使变暗淡) the stars light slightly. Lisa Kaltenegger, director of the Carl Sagan Institute at Cornell University(康奈尔大学卡尔·萨根研究所) and Jacqueline Faherty of the American Museum of Natural History wisely turned that around, looking to see what star systems could watch Earth as it passes in front of the sun.

They looked at the 331,312 stars within 326 light years of Earth—one light-year is 9.5 trillion kilometers. The angle(角度) to see Earth pass in front of the sun is so small that only 1,715 of those stars could see our planet at some point in the last 5,000 years, including 313 that can no longer see us because we’ve moved out of view.

Another 319 stars will be able to see Earth in the next 5,000 years, including a few star systems where scientists have already found Earth-like planets.

The closest star on Kaltenegger’s list is Wolf 359, which is 7.9 light years away. It has been able to see us since the mid 1970s.

25.According to Paragraph 4, we know light years are units of ________.

A.time                       B.area                       C.length                    D.weight

26.If scientists find radio waves from human sources on another planet, we can infer(推断) that ________.

A.the planet is near us                                   B.the planet has life on it

C.the planet travels around Earth                    D.the planet has a good angle to see Earth

27.From the passage, we can learn ________.

A.Earth is the only planet for humans to live on

B.life on every planet can have a clear view of Earth

C.1715 stars could see Earth because they are the closest

D.Earth’s passing in front of the sun will dim the sunlight

Do you believe in green living? Read the following blog and comments(评论)about a fun, easy and creative way to make your lifestyle greener.

Gina’ Space                                         8:32 a. m. 11th February 2020
UpcyclingNowadays, we are more wasteful than ever. We need to start living more responsibly—but how? One answer is to upcycle. I started upcycling clothing. Making new things out of old clothes is the best way to mix my talent and my interest. I made a “new” hat for my brother. It used to be my dad’s sweater. Do you upcycle? If so, what new things have you made? If not, why not give it a try.
Comments Terry-B                                9:08 a. m. 11th February 2020 Why don’t you give your older clothes to people in need? I even give away the most expensive things I don’t wear any more. I can help the environment while giving something useful to people in need.

Gina                                   9:28 a. m. 11th February 2020

Good point! I’m talking about the clothes that are too old to be worn by others. The same idea goes for food waste at restaurants and supermarkets. Before upcycling food that can still be eaten, for example, using it to make soil rich, we should give it to those in need.

Bety99                                  10:18a. m. 1lth February 2020

It is dark. Holmes, Lestrade and I move towards the house. “Let’s wait here,” Holmes says. “We can hide behind these rocks. Watson, go to the house and see what they are doing. Make sure they don’t see you.” I hide behind a wall. I can see Mr. Stapleton and Sir Henry sitting at a table.

Then, Stapleton leaves the room and walks to a shed(小屋) in the yard. He opens the door and there is a strange noise from inside. After a minute he locks the door and goes back into the house. I hurry back to report everything to Lestrade and Holmes.

There is now a thick white fog over the moor(荒野). “The fog is getting thicker,” says Holmes. “This is very serious—Sir Henry must go home soon.”

Suddenly, we hear footsteps. They get closer and we see Sir Henry walking towards us through the fog. Then, we hear something. A terrible animal appears. It is a huge black hound(猎犬). There is fire coming from its mouth and its huge eyes are glowing(发红光).

The hound runs after Sir Henry. Holmes and I both fire our guns. We hit it but the hound doesn’t stop. It jumps on Sir Henry and pushes him to the ground. Holmes points his gun and shoots the hound five times. The giant hound is dead.

Sir Henry is lying on the path. We run to him and find he is alive.

I put my hand on the hound’s glowing face and find my own fingers glow in the dark. “Phosphorous(含磷的),” I say.

We walk towards Merripit House to search for Stapleton. In the house we don’t find him, but we find Mrs. Stapleton tied up in a bedroom. We untied her. When she knows Sir Henry is alive and the hound is dead, she cries, “Thank God!”

To Friend or Not to Friend

We all love our parents and turn to them when we’re in need, but would you like them to hear the conversations you have with your friends on the school playground or lunch queue? Social networking sites have been popular, so would you add your parents as “friends” and allow them to view your online activities and conversations with friends?

In the past the generation gap included a technology gap, where children were up to date with latest technology and parents were left behind because they had no need to know more about technology. However, more and more parents are beginning to realize how important social networks are in their lives.

These days many people are attracted to social networking sites because they can choose who they have around them; there’s also a certain amount of control over privacy that we don’t get in real life. Sometimes we feel that privacy is violated when we must accept a “friend” request from a parent or family member.

It’s a difficult choice whether or not to allow a parent to become a part of our online lives. On the one hand we don’t want to refuse their request because that might hurt their feelings or make them feel you have something to hide. On the other hand if you do accept, then you could have a sense of being watched and no longer feel free to comment or communicate the way you did before.

A recent survey suggested that parents shouldn’t take it personally if their child ignores (忽视) their request: “When a teen ignores a parent’s friend request, it doesn’t necessarily mean that they are hiding something, but it could mean that this is one part of their life where they want to be independent.” Perhaps talking with parents and giving explanations would help if you do choose not to add them to your friends list.

34.From Paragraph 2, we learn that ________.

A.parents feel secure about the privacy online

B.social networks successfully fill the generation gap

C.parents have realized the importance of social networks

D.social networks offer a platform for parents to communicate

35.Teenagers may refuse a parent’s friend request because ________.

A.they hide something from their parents        B.they are unwilling to be watched by parents

C.their parents will fall behind in technology   D.their parents make bad comments on them

36.The passage is mainly about ________.

A.parents’friend requests                               B.social networks

C.privacy online                                           D.the generation gap

37.The passage is written mainly for ________.

A.teachers                  B.parents                   C.teenagers                D.researchers

The pilot, Antoine De Saint-Exupery, who wrote The Little Prince, died long ago, but the fictional pilot, who told the story, is as alive today as he was many years ago, along with his Prince, the fox, the rose and the snake.

This timeless tale touches upon childhood and growing up. It opens with the reminder: All grown-ups were once children—but few of them remember it. The pilot in this story loses that part of himself. After a stay in the desert with the little prince, he finds his inner child again. It is a simple story with life lessons. Here are some.

One only understands the things that one tames. Seeing the thousands of roses that look just like his rose makes the prince feel as if he was tricked by his flower. The fox shows him taming someone takes time. The prince understands the nature of relationships: the time he has wasted on his rose makes her so important.

The fox, as his parting gift, shares his secret with the prince: “One can see rightly with the heart. What is essential (基本的) is invisible (看不见的) to the eye. ” When the pilot shows his picture about the snake eating the elephant, adults only see it as a hat. Adults can’t see what’s inside the snake.

What is on the surface is not what matters. This truth sets the little prince free. He decides to join his rose back on his planet.

Has he returned to his planet and his rose? The ending exists in the imagination of every reader and the pilot. After all, it is a book with something for everyone.

Why is The Little Prince a book for everyone?

参考答案

1.A

【详解】句意:老太太经常坐在窗边,期待着儿子从战场上回来。

考查介词辨析。by在……

根据“Let’s put it in the lost and found of our school.”可知,是捡到了帽子,所以应是有人落下了帽子,故选B。
