I’ve been writing detective stories since I was a teenager. Some people think it’s a strange job for a woman, but I think crime fiction is for everyone.I’ve started giving writing classes and the most common question people ask is, “Where do you start?” It’s impossible to give fixed rules, but there are some general tips that people often find useful.
Before you start writing, choose a time period and place that sound realistic(现实的).A useful tip is to write about what you know.If you were born in Paris or London, it might make sense to set your story in a European country.Of course, you can write about any century, but you’ll have to do a lot more research to make your story believable.
The character of your detective is very important. He or she must have qualities that help them solve the crime, but they also need characteristics that make them an individual(个人).He or she must also fit in the time and place of your story.Readers are very knowledgeable, and they will notice if you get any details wrong about the time period.
Every detective story needs a crime, of course. You need to explain what happens before the crime, the crime itself and what happens next.Remember that you don’t always have to write about a murder. Some readers don’t enjoy stories filled with guns and blood. So, why not write about a theft, kidnapping, or something different like an environmental crime?
Clues are important to keep the readers’ interest. They must be interesting, but not too difficult or repetitive(重复的).The readers also need to know who the suspects are and whether they can prove that they were somewhere else when a crime was committed.Readers love a “twist” at the end of the story—-a surprise or a new fact that brings the action to its conclusion.
29.What is the most common question the writer gets from people taking her writing classes?
A.How to start writing a detective story.
B.How to make the story realistic.
C.How to create interesting characters.
D.How to choose a time period.
30.When creating the character of a detective, what should be considered?
A.Only the qualities that help solve the crime.
B.Only the characteristics that make them an individual.
C.Both the qualities for solving the crime and the individual characteristics.
D.Neither the qualities for solving the crime nor the individual characteristics.
31.From the passage, we can infer that ________.
A.writing about a murder is the only way to write a detective story
B.the writer doesn’t like writing about guns and blood in detective stories
C.readers will lose interest if the clues are too easy or repetitive
D.the suspects can never prove they were somewhere else when a crime was committed
32.Why did the writer write this passage?
A.To keep the readers’ interest.
B.To tell a real detective story.
C.To describe the life of a story writer.
D.To give advice on writing a detective story.

A thief entered the bedroom of the 30th President of the United States, who met him and helped him escape punishment.
The event happened in the early morning hours in one of the first days when Calvin Coolidge came into power, late in August, 1923.He and his family were living in the same third-floor suite(套房) at the Willard Hotel in Washington that they had occupied several years before. The former President’s wife was still living in the White House.Coolidge awoke to see a stranger go through his clothes, remove a wallet and a watch chain.
Coolidge spoke, “I wish you wouldn’t take that.”
The thief, gaining his voice, said, “Why?”
“I don’t mean the watch and chain, only the charm(表坠).Take it near the window and read what is impressed on its back,” the President said.
The thief read, “Presented to Calvin Coolidge.”
“Are you President Coolidge?” he asked.
The President answered, “Yes, and the House of Representatives(众议院) gave me that watch charm.I’m fond of it.It would do you no good. You want money.Let’s talk this over.” Holding up the wallet, the young man said in a low voice, “I’ll take this and leave everything else.”
Coolidge, knowing there was $ 80 in it, persuaded the young man to sit down and talk.He told the President he and his college roommate had overspent during their holiday and did not have enough money to pay their hotel bill.
Coolidge decided to offer the man and his roommate two rail tickets back to the college. Then he counted out $ 32 said it was a loan(借款).He then told the young man, “There is a guard in the corridor.” The young man nodded and left through the same window as he had entered.

Have you ever wondered how we know the things that we know? How do we know, for example, that the stars are really huge balls of fire like the Sun and very far away? And how do we know that the Earth is a smaller ball turning round one of those stars, the Sun?
The key to these questions is “evidence”, which means the facts, signs or objects that make you believe something is true.
Sometimes evidence means actually(实际上) seeing (or hearing, feeling, smelling…)that something is true.Astronauts have travelled far enough from the Earth to see with their own eyes that it is round.Sometimes our eyes need help. The “evening star” looks like bright twinkle in the sky, but with a telescope(望远镜) you can see that it is a beautiful ball.Something that you learn by direct seeing (or hearing or feeling…) is called an observation.
Often evidence isn’t just observation on its own, but observation always hides at the back of it.If there’s been a murder, often nobody (except the murderer and the dead person!) actually observed it.But detectives can gather together lots of other observations which may all point towards the suspect. If a person’s fingerprints match those found on a knife, this is evidence that he touched it.It doesn’t prove that he did the murder, but it can help when it’s joined up with lots of other evidence.
Prediction(预测) helps to look for evidence.Scientists make a guess about what might be true. For example, if the world is really round, we can predict that any of us, going on and on in the same direction, should eventually find ourselves back where we started.
People sometimes say that you must believe in feelings deep inside, but not all the inside feelings are real evidence.
What can we do about all this? When somebody tells you something that sounds possible, think to yourself: “Is there any evidence for that?” And, next time somebody tells you that something is true, why not say to them: “What kind of evidence is there for that?” Remember, always think carefully before you believe a word.
37.Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?
A.What you see directly is real evidence.
B.Prediction helps to prove something if it is true
C.people should always believe their inside feelings.
D.Astronauts find the Earth is round with a telescope
38.Why does the writer use the example of a detective in Paragraph 4?
A.To explain what the prediction is.
B.To tell what observation is called.
C.To introduce how detectives work.
D.To prove evidence is not just observation
39.The underlined word “eventually” in Paragraph 5 means ________.
A.finally B.probably C.completely D.luckily
40.What’s the best title of the passage?
A.Evidence speaks
B.Scientists make predictions
C.Inside feelings help get ideas
D.Observation offers the facts

where哪里;who谁;which哪个;what什么。分析句子结构可知,此句是一个定语从句,先行词是person,用who引导定语从句,故选B。
