Sherlock Holmes may be the world’s most famous fictional detective. But in China, someone is able to compete with him in popularity. His name is Di Renjie.

Unlike Holmes, who is a fictional character, Di Renjie (AD 630-700) was a real person in history. He served twice as prime minister in the Tang Dynasty (AD 618-907) under Empress Wu Zetian. When he was the secretary general of the supreme court, he once judged 17,000 cases in a year without complaint.

Maybe that’s why Di has been described as a smart detective and long been popular in print and on screen.

In the 18th century, a crime novel called Dee Goong An was published.Nowadays, there is a popular TV series called Amazing Detective Di Renjie, as well as a series of Detective Dee films.

He even became internationally famous when Dutch diplomat Robert van Gulik (1910-1967) began to write and publish a series of detective novels based on him in the 1950s.

In Gulik’s stories, Di is different from the character in Chinese stories like Dee Goong An, in which he is mostly a righteous official, righting wrongs and helping the poor.

He is called Judge Dee in Gulik’s books and is described as a fit man with a well-trimmed beard. He is a kung fu master and his assistants are all former criminals who help him solve cases.

Dee often travels alone in clever disguises.Sometimes he makes mistakes and takes a while to solve a case.He believes in the power of deductive reasoning. He doesn’t torture criminals to get confessions.Instead, he tricks them into confessing themselves.

Judge Dee is a likeable hero with a human touch. His style is more like a Western detective. It is no wonder why he is called the “Chinese Sherlock Holmes” in the West.

29.What’s the main idea of Paragraph 2?

A.Who Di Renjie was.

B.How Di Renjie became famous.

C.Why Di Renjie was smart.

D.What Di Renjie did as a judge.

30.What does the underlined word “that” in Paragraph 3 refer to?

A.He served twice as prime minister in the Tang Dynasty.

B.He once judged 17,000 cases in a year without complaint.

C.He even became internationally famous.

D.Di has been described as a smart detective and long been popular.

31.What can we get from Gulik’s stories?

①Dee is a great official.    ②Dee is called a Judge.    ③Dee likes to help the poor.

④Dee enjoys correcting the wrongs.  ⑤Dee makes the former criminals assistants.

⑥Dee is a kung fu master.

A.①②③               B.②③⑤                  C.②④⑤                   D.②⑤⑥

32.What can be the best title for the passage?

A.Sherlock Holmes

B.A famous TV series

C.Chinese Sherlock Holmes

D.Gulik’s novels

In Paris, one freezing winter evening, I was having dinner with my friend, Mr.Dupin, the famous detective. We had just finished our meal, when there was a loud knocking at the door.Dupin opened it.There stood Mr.Germain, the chief of the Paris Police.

We welcomed him warmly, for he was an old acquaintance (熟人) whom we hadn’t seen for a great time.

“I need your assistance,” said Germain.“I met a case(案件) that has been giving me a great deal of trouble. It is very simple but very strange.”

“Also, please keep this secret. If anyone found out that I told you this.I would certainly lose my job.”

“Well, then,” said the Chief, “I have learned that a very important letter has been stolen from the king.We are sure who stole it and that the letter is in his house.”

“But who would dare do such a thing” I cried.

“The thief,” said Germain softly, “He’s a man who dares do many dangerous things. He is one of the most powerful and important ministers in the government. He is Minister Danton.”

“Have you searched his house?”

“A lot of times. While Minister Danton was out, a lot of well-trained police officers carefully searched the entire house, room by room.In fact, we examined everything in the house but found nothing.”…

A month later, Dupin asked Germain and me to his house. There he took out a letter and handed it to the Chief. We were both very surprised.

Dupin explained, “I know Minister Danton very well.He could not hide the letter in any of the usual hiding places.I realized that he might have left the letter out in the open, right under everyone’s nose, where no one would search for it.”

“Then I visited him with my dark glasses on to help me observe(观察) better. While we were chatting, a dirty, torn letter in the letter holder suddenly caught my eyes—unusual for the Minister, who is careful and neat.”

“I was sure it was the letter.”

“Then I purposely left my gloves behind so I could come back again.”

“The next morning, I hired a man to fire a gun on the street, while the Minister went to see what happened, I stole the letter by replacing it with a similar one.” On it Dupin wrote these words:

Your plan was good, but mine was better.

As you can see, I took the letter.

Before the discovery of DNA information in the 1980s, fingerprints(指纹) were the easiest way to solve serious crimes. It’s believed that each one of us has our own fingerprints. But do you know that our fingerprints can show a lot about us?

According to The Conversation, fingerprints can show lifestyle and environment, eating habits, possible medical problems and even the job of a person.

So how can we work all this out from just a simple fingerprint?

Well, a fingerprint is formed when a finger touches a surface. Most fingerprints can’t be seen to the eye and require a chemical development process in order to make them shown.Stuck between the raised lines of a fingerprint are things that can tell a story about who we are.Things like sweat, blood and food show a lot of information about us.

Besides, its use could be much wider. For example, it may be helpful in the future to doctors treating their patients.A fingerprint check may also tell a doctor whether a patient is properly having a medicine. In the treatment of some of the most serious illnesses, having proper medicine is important.

In the future, fingerprint science can be used by the police and help doctors keep us in the best possible health.

37.What can we learn from Paragraph 1?

A.DNA can be used to solve serious crimes.
B.Fingerprints may show everything about us.
C.We didn’t begin to use fingerprints until 1980s.
D.Fingerprints are now the easiest way to solve crimes.

根据“It’s…just a joke to you, but to me, it’s not funny at all.”可知,此处是在阐述让丽萨不要再那样说的原因,空处推测丽萨的观点,表示不确定,用副词probably。
