(NEW YORK) A French tourist highly praised for saving a two-year- old girl in Manhattan said he didn’t think twice before jumping into the cold East River.
Tuesday’s Daily News said the 29-year-old young man left the spot quickly after bringing the girl to safety last Saturday.
He lifted the little girl out of the water after she fell off the bank (河岸) near a museum. He handed the girl to her father, David Anderson, who had jumped in after him. “I didn’t think at all,” Duret told Daily News. “It happened very fast. I reacted very fast.” Duret, an engineer on vacation, was walking with his girlfriend along the bank when he saw something falling into the water. He thought it was a doll, but realized it was a child when he walked close to the river. Without thinking twice, he took off his coat and jumped into the water at once.
When he reached the girl, she seemed lifeless, he said. Fortunately, when she was taken out of the water, she opened her eyes slowly.
Anderson said his daughter fell off the bank while he was checking his camera. An ambulance(牧护车) came later for her, said Duret, who was handed clothes from onlookers (旁观者). Duret caught a bus with his girlfriend shortly after.
The story happened on the day before he left for France. Duret said he didn’t realize his story had greatly moved New York until he was leaving the next morning.
“I don’t really think I’m a hero,” said Duret. “Anyone would do the same thing.”
26.Why was Duret in New York?
A.To meet his girlfriend. B.To work as an engineer.
C.To spend his holiday. D.To visit the Andersons.
27.What did Duret do shortly after the ambulance came?
A.He was interviewed by a newspaper.
B.He asked his girlfriend for his clothes.
C.He went to the hospital in the ambulance.
D.He went away from the spot quickly.
28.When was Duret most probably found to be the very hero?
A.The day when he left France. B.The next day when the girl was saved.
C.The first day when he was in New York. D.The same day when he was interviewed.

The world is not hungry, but it is thirsty. It seems strange that nearly 3/4 of the Earth is covered with water while we say we are short of water. Why? Because about 97% of the water on the Earth is sea water which we can’t drink or use for watering plants directly. Man can only drink and use 3% of the water that comes from rivers and lakes. And we can’t even use all of that because some of it has been polluted.
Now more water is needed. The problem is: Can we avoid a serious water shortage later on? First, we should all learn how to save water. Second, we should find out the ways to reuse it. Scientists have always been making a study in this field. Today, in most large cities, water is used only once and then runs to the seas or rivers. However, it can be used again. Even if every large city reused its water, there still would not be enough water. What could people turn to next?
The sea seems to have the best answer. There is a lot of water in the sea. All that needs to be done is to get the salt out of the sea water. This is expensive, but it’s already in use in many parts of the world. Scientists are trying to find a cheaper way to do it. So you see, if we can find a way out, we’ll be in no danger of drying up.
29.The world is thirsty because ________.
A.3/4 of the Earth is covered with water
B.we have enough sea water to use directly
C.we haven’t used all the water in rivers and lakes
D.about 97% of the water on the Earth can’t be drunk or used for watering plants directly
30.From the passage we learn ________.
A.if every city reuses its water, we won’t be in danger of drying up
B.man can only drink and use about 25% of the water on the Earth
C.today in most large cities water is used only once
D.water can be used only once
31.To avoid the serious water shortage, which of the following is the most important?
A.Save water and try to make good use of the water in rivers and lakes.
B.Don’t pollute water and keep all rivers and lakes clean.
C.Make dirty water clean and then reuse it.
D.Try to find a cheaper way to get the salt out of the sea water.

If you’re ever apart from your children, a new study says just talking on the phone will help just as much as a hug(拥抱).
If you’re a parent who spends long hours on the job, you probably feel sorry for spending so much time away from your kids. But the results of a new study show that a mother’s voice alone can be just as comforting to an anxious child as physical contact(接触).
In an experiment, researchers from the University of Wisconsin Madison asked a group of girls between the ages of 7 and 12 to solve maths problems in front of judges—a stressful situation for anyone. Before the girls were set to give their answers, the researchers measured their levels of two hormones(荷尔蒙): cortisol, which goes up during stressful periods, and oxytocin, the “love” hormone, which goes down at the same time.
After the girls finished the problems, some of them got to meet up with their mothers right away. The mums came in and hugged the girls. Another group of the girls didn’t see their mothers, but received phone calls from them, in which their mothers told them how well they’d done. The final group had no contact with their mothers, but instead watched an animal movie, MarchofthePenguins.
Finally, the girls’ hormone levels were measured again. Although the movie was interesting, it did nothing to reduce the children’s anxiety—but, surprisingly, both the physical contact and phone calls from their mothers had the same effect on reducing the girls’ stress levels.
So, no matter how old you are, if you’re feeling stressed about something in your life, a phone call to Mum might be just the key to helping you feel better.
32.If a girl is under stress, ________.
A.she can’t solve math problems B.she will have high levels of hormone
C.oxytocin will remain at a high level D.cortisol will go up with oxytocin down
33.Which of the following is the right order in which the study was carried out?
a. The girls’ levels of hormones were measured again.
b. The girls were asked to solve math problems.
c. The girls’ levels of hormones were measured.
d. The girls were divided into three groups.
A.b-c-d-a B.d-b-c-a C.c-b-d-a D.d-c-b-a
34.From the passage, we can infer that ________.
A.it is easy for girls to solve math problems
B.the girls who had watched the movie remained anxious
C.all mothers should hug their kids as often as possible
D.older girls have higher cortisol than younger ones
35.What’s the main idea of the passage?
A.A mother’s voice can comfort her anxious kids.
B.Mothers should often hug their kids.
C.Mothers should spend enough time caring about their kids.
D.Scientists discovered why kids become stressed when having tests.

When I was growing up, I had an old neighbour, Dr. Gibbs. He didn’t look like any doctor I’d ever known. He never invited us to play in his yard, but he was a very kind person.
When Dr. Gibbs wasn’t saving lives, he was planting trees. He owned a large field and wanted to make it a forest.
The good doctor had some interesting ideas about planting trees. He never watered his new trees. Once I asked why. He said that watering plants spoiled (惯坏) them, and that if you watered them, each baby tree would grow weaker and weaker. So you had to make things difficult for them and weed (除去) out the weaker trees early on.
He talked about how watering trees made for shallow (浅的) roots (根), and how trees that weren’t watered had to grow deep roots in search of water under the earth by themselves. Deep roots were very important.
So he never watered his trees. He’d planted an oak and, instead of watering it every morning, he’d beaten (击打) it with a rolled-up newspaper. I asked him why he did that, and he said it was to get the tree’s attention.
Dr. Gibbs died several years after I left home. Every now and then, I walk by his house and look at the trees that I watched him plant about twenty-five years ago. They’re very big and strong now. I planted some trees a few years back and watched them for a whole summer. After two years of too much care, they shake a lot whenever a cold wind blows.
Every night before I go to bed, I check on my two sons. Mostly I pray (祈祷) that their lives will be easy. But lately I’ve been thinking that it’s time to change my prayer. I know my children are going to face difficulties. There’s always a cold wind blowing somewhere, so what we need to do is to pray for roots that reach deep into the brave heart, so when the rain fall and the winds blow, we can face them strongly and not be beaten down.
36.We know from the reading the doctor ________.
A.didn’t know how to plant trees at all B.wasn’t good at his own medical job
C.had his own ways of caring for trees D.had nothing to do but plant trees
37.When Dr. Gibbs said “… weed out the weaker trees early on.” he meant that ________.
A.the weak trees would be easily discovered at the beginning
B.he would choose the weak trees to water earlier
C.the weak trees would be sent to his patients later
D.he would not plant weak trees so early any more
38.The passage tells us that the writer ________.
A.beat his trees with a rolled-up newspaper B.didn’t often water his tree
C.didn’t have a large field D.took too much care of his trees
39.The writer wants to change his prayer, hoping that ________.
A.his trees will be stronger than Dr. Gibbs’ B.his trees will not be beaten down
C.his sons will be better at planting trees D.his sons will be able to face difficulties
40.Which is the best title for the reading?
A.Watering Trees B.Growing Roots
C.A Doctor and his Neighbour D.Father and his children

second it early when color |
Does your school have school buses? Or perhaps you’ve seen school buses from other schools. Have you ever noticed that most school buses are yellow? Why are they this 51 ?
First, bright yellow gets our attention faster than any other color. Many school buses bring children to school in the 52 morning hours. At this time of day, it may still be a little dark. Yellow makes 53 easier for people to notice the school bus.
The 54 reason is about our ability to look out of the corner of our eyes. Even when we are looking straight ahead, we can see things to our left or right. Yellow makes it more possible for people to be seen than any other color. We are 1.24 times more likely to notice something yellow, even 55 we’re not looking straight at it.
Different colours have different senses
There are many colours in the nature. But do you know if a colour has weight?I think you’ll say “no”. But I am afraid you are wrong. If you don’t believe, you may do a small experiment(实验).
First, put two objects with the same weight into two boxes. Then cover the box. Third, wrap(包裹)one box with a red piece of paper, the other with a white piece of paper. OK. Now hold the boxes with your hand one by one. It is certain that you will think the red one is a little heavier.
Why do you think so?A scientist found that different colours have different weights in a man’s mind. So he did some tests and at last he got the result. That is to say, every colour has its own weight in our mind and their order is the same. The heaviest colour is red, then blue, green, orange, yellow and white.
The scientist told us that colours also have smell. Can you smell the colour?Of course not. Then why did the scientist say so?That is because every colour stands for a kind of light with a certain wavelength(波长). It reaches our brain through sense organs(感觉器官).
According to this discovery, scientists say that people accept the colours they like, and refuse the colours they hate. So your body and mind will be healthy by using the colours you like. Or you’ll be nervous or even get ill. For example, if you stay in a room with red windows, wallpapers and furniture for two hours, you’ll feel you have been there for four hours. But if the room is blue, you’ll feel you have been there fur only an hour. Another example, if a person walks out of a red room and into a blue room, his temperature will fall. That means our body temperature will change with different colours.
Discoveries | Example | Reasons |
Colours have 56 . | You may feel the red box is
57 than the white one, though they have the same weight. |
Every colour has its own weight in our 58 . The heaviest one is 59 and the 60 one is white. |
Colours have senses. | The colour you like can make you 61 .
You’ll feel time passes much 62in the red room than in the blue one. The colour will cause the 63 of your body temperature if you go from a red room into a blue one. |
The 64 wavelength of each colour makes us feel the 65 of the colour. |
B)请根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词,并将答案填写在答题卡标号为66-75的相应位置上。
How many of you do household chores at home? It’s reported that few teenagers would like to spend time on them. In their opinion, it’s a complete w 66 of time. Some even think they should be taken good care of by their parents all the time. However, such life skills are really necessary.
On June 3, 2020, the Ministry of Education (MOE) produced a document(文件)for high schools. A 67 to the document, labor education is listed as a compulsory(必修的)c 68 for high school students. It would be as i 69 as the foreign language or physics. And each of them takes six credits(学分). Voluntary service, as part of labor education, would take two credits. The MOE also asks schools to make sure students do 40 hours of voluntary service d 70 the full three school years.
A recent study shows that teenagers in China are doing very little housework. Primary and middle school students spend only 12 minutes a day on chores, c 71 to 72 minutes in the US, 42 minutes in South Korea and 30 minutes in France.
Parents think doing household chores would make students pay less a 72 to their schoolwork. In fact, it is very h 73 for teenagers. Chores can not only teach teamwork and problem-solving s 74 but also give people a sense of pride. “Through such education, students are expected to develop working abilities as well as a better u 75 of the world,” said Zheng Fuzhi, vice-minister of the MOE.
