第一部分 完形填空(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
I live on the coast with beautiful sandy beaches. It’s the perfect 1 for my favourite hobby—making sand sculptures. I’d never thought of making sand sculptures before 2 some fantastic ones appeared all along the beach. Beautiful buildings and lovely animals were all made of sand. From that moment, I knew that this was something I just had to do, though I’d never considered myself to be a(n) 3 .
In fact, anyone can create a sand sculpture, but it’s much harder than it looks. The first sand sculpture I tried making was a two-metre long dolphin. I was making 4 on it until suddenly the head started to break off! I tried everything to 5 it, but it was hopeless. Soon the whole thing was a big pile of sand. Some people nearby seemed to think this was quite funny, but that just made me keep trying even 6 . I wished I’d listened to an expert (专家) on YouTube who recommends digging up 7 sand and to use it to build the sand sculptures because it sticks together better. So, I did that for my next sculpture of a camel. And I 8 to complete it in four hours, though it didn’t take me that long to make.
People say that making sand castles is for kids, not adults, but that doesn’t bother (困扰) me at all. Many people don’t understand that even a 9 touch can make a sand sculpture fall off. Of course, heavy rain can do some damage (损坏), but not as much as you might think. If you build far enough up the beach, the sea water won’t 10 a sand sculpture away either. So, when you’re next at the seaside, make one yourself—you’ll get a great sense of achievement!

Hangzhou hosts the 19th Asian Games from September 23rd to October 8th, 2023.
The Games are very “smart” thanks to the use of many exciting technologies.
The place for the tennis finals is sometimes called the “Small Lotus (莲花)”. On the top of the stadium (体育场), there are eight “petals” (花瓣). Each petal weighs 160 tons. They can open and close freely. It takes 15 minutes for each petal to open and close. It’s built this way for different kinds of weather.
What if there’s an accident during the game and the athletes need first aid (急救)? Drones (无人机) can be used to send things over. They can fly as far as 20 kilometers and travel 16 meters in one second.
Every dish at the Asian Games should be safe and healthy to eat. In the kitchen of the athletes’ village in Hangzhou, there is a special system that can tell people’s faces. If a “stranger” goes into the kitchen, an alarm will go off to let people know.
Do you want to walk around at the stadiums but can’t make it in person? You can try the Hangzhou Asian Games’ metaverse (元宇宙)! You can try it with an app on Alipay (支付宝). Inside, it’s like an online cartoon world. You can enjoy the charm (魅力) of the stadiums both from the outside and inside.
It will be sad if you can’t find your way. Augmented Reality (AR,增强现实) is here to help. There’s a mini-program called the Hangzhou Asian Games AR service. You can simply turn on your phone’s camera, and it will see where you are and then show you the way.

Imagine an island where there are a greater number of cats than there are people. Does it sound like something from a cartoon or a manga (日本漫画) story? Welcome to Tashirojima, a small island in the Pacific Ocean off the coast of Japan. It’s a great place to be a cat. Not only does the cat population number in the thousands, much larger than the island’s human population of about 100, but these cats are taken care of by both local people and tourists.
The Japanese love cats. There are cat shrines (神庙) all over Japan. and many of the country’s folk tales feature cats as well. ___▲____?
At one time, the island’s main industry was fishing. The fishing nets were made of silk, and the fishermen raised silkworms to produce the silk for these nets. They kept cats around to kill mice, which were the predators of the silkworms. In order to get food. the cats would also visit the hotels where the fishermen from other islands would be staying. The fishermen became fond of the cats and started watching them all the time, thinking that the cats’ actions could tell them the weather or the movements of the fish in the ocean.
A story is told that one day, a fisherman was collecting rocks to hold down his fishing net when one of the rocks dropped from his hands and accidentally killed a cat. The fisherman felt so bad about it that he buried (埋葬) the cat in the center of the island and built a shrine to cats there. The shrine is called Neko-jinja, and by leaving offerings for the cat god”, fishermen hope for a good catch and for their safety.
Word soon spread about Cat Island, and tourists came together to see and play with the thousands of cats that would walk down the island’s streets or sit on the doorsteps of people’s homes. Japanese manga artist Shotaro Ishinomori built several manga-related buildings on the island, most of which looked like cats. These developed into a tourist attraction, with guests staying in the cat-shaped houses. Since then, many movies, television series and documentaries have been made about Tashirojima, which has helped bring in even more visitors.
So the next time you see a cat lover looking for the “purrfect” vacation spot, recommend to them a trip to Tashirojima, Japan’s Cat Island.

19.Which of the following sentences is the most suitable for ___▲____?

C.So why do Japanese people love cats so much?
D.So who built the first cat shrine on Tashirojima?
20.What does the underlined word “predators” in paragraph 3 probably mean?
A.enemies B.friends C.producers D.protectors
21.What’s the main purpose of the passage?

D
I looked down at my shoes as people filled the train, and then I saw her. She looked a little tired and pale. As I watched the woman, I thought about the letters my mother wrote and how she must have known an ordinary piece of paper turns into a love letter when a person puts herself into it. Then I remembered the notebook in my bag. I would write the woman a note and give it to her as I exited the train, I decided. I pulled the notebook out of my bag and began writing a letter.
When I looked up, the woman was gone. I left the letter in my notebook, unsure of what to do with it now that she would never know that it was meant for her.
After I wrote that letter, more letters to other people I observed came marching out of me, one by one, until soon I had filled up the notebook.
Back on the train, just a few days later, the plan became clear. I was going to leave the letter I wrote to the woman on the subway for someone else to find. Then I would spread other love letters all over New York City. And once I had set each one in its place, I would write even more.
I tried to form a picture in my mind of what would make me pick up a letter if I found it on a random (任意的) subway train or in a coffee shop thinking it might have been for me all along. I settled on something simple: If you find this letter then it’s for you. I wrote those words on my first letter. I folded the letter and placed it behind me. When I got to my stop, I planned to let the letter slip down onto the seat as I walked away.
At Grand Cantral Terminal, I waited for the subway doors to open and then stood up as quickly as possible. Rushing through the doors, I kept running faster and faster once my feet hit the platform. I was more nervous when I got farther away from the train, disappearing into the city.
During the fall of 2010, I kept leaving letters. In the months that followed, I started my own site, MoreLoveLetters.com, about my project, inspiring others to write and leave letters in their own communities. Now the website connects strangers in need of love letters and those who want to write them.
About a year later, a woman wrote to me about her friend Briana, a single mother struggling to pay the rent. I typed out Briana’s story and published it on the website. A week later, I walked away from the post office with a lot of mail and a big idea about human beings: mainly that if you give them something to do, a task, they will show up. At the end of that month, I mailed letters off to Briana.
Then, I got a thank-you e-mail from Briana’s friend. “They show you’re not alone and that you’re not struggling for nothing,” she wrote.
About all stories, I will always go back to Matt’s from Ohio. He e-mailed me about two years ago. Matt told me he was getting older. His family and he were disconnected. He didn’t have many friends. He was starting to believe he’d leave nothing behind and he’d be forgotten.
The message was sent with no return address. There was no way to write back to him, but I hope he reads these words:
Matt, I want you to know: You were wrong to think you’d be forgotten. And I was wrong to think people couldn’t walk into our lives and change our histories immediately. Because you did that for me.
22.Why did the author decide to write the strange woman a note?
A.Her mother reminded her to do that.
B.She preferred to write rather than speak.
C.She was going to show love to the woman.
D.Her mother wanted to offer her some help.
23.The author started her own site in order to ________.
A.call on more people to care for others
B.provide people a chance to write letters.
C.connect strangers with people writing letters
D.show people the importance of her project
24.From the words to Matt, we can learn that ________.
A.it’s easy for people to walk into our lives quickly
B.the author was influenced by Matt in some ways
C.the author’s relatives and friends also forgot him
D.Matt was always connected with his family and friends
25.What can we infer from the passage?
A.Matt has a good relationship with his family and friends again.
B.A number of people are willing to make a difference to others.
C.The woman the author met on the train received the letter at last.
D.People came to Briana’s aid with a generous donation in the end.

Lots of people have never seen snakes, but they are afraid of them. 26
To find out the answer, scientists put pictures with snakes, pandas, flowers and many other things in front of people of all ages, even babies. People found snakes faster than flowers. It wasn’t just snakes. They found “black faces”, like spiders (蜘蛛), faster than “safe” things like flowers. It seems we find things that might be dangerous to us faster. 27
Why do people fear snakes? 28 However, they said that in their experiences, they were influenced by the seared voice and faces of those who met snakes. After all (毕竟), if we are bitten by a snake, and then we know it’s dangerous. That’s too late.
So why is it important whether we are afraid of snakes or not? 29 People protect animals they like, not animals they fear. Snakes may not be as cute as pandas, but they’re just of the same importance to the environment. They eat insects and mice. So when we kill snakes, we’re breaking the balance.
30 Scientists did a study recently. Some volunteer students went on a field trip. With the help of safety tips, everyone could safely touch and hold a snake. The result is that snakes aren’t so bad. Most of them weren’t afraid afterwards. In fact, snakes even became some students’ favourite animal.
A.Where can people see snakes?
B.Maybe we are born to be afraid of them.
C.Because they had the experiences of being bitten by snakes.
D.Where does the fear come from?
E.How can we reduce our fears to give snakes a chance?
F.It may not matter to us, but it is really important to snakes.
G.In fact, most of them weren’t bitten by snakes.
