The Fish I Didn’t Catch

fishing pole           hook

I still remember my first fishing trip as if it were yesterday. It was a sweet day of early summer. I received the first fishing pole from my uncle’s hand, and walked with him towards the     16     .

My uncle, who knew where the best place of fish was, kindly placed me at the most favorable point. I threw out my line as I had so often seen others, and     17     eagerly for a bite. Nothing came of it. “Try again,” said my uncle. Suddenly the bait (鱼饵) went down out of     18     . “Now for it,” I thought, “Here is a fish at last.”

I made a strong pull, and brought up a tangle of weeds (一团海草). Again and again I cast out my line and drew it back     19     . I looked at my uncle appealingly (可怜巴巴地) . “Try once more,” he said, “We fishermen must have     20     . It took me a whole day until I got my first fish.”

Suddenly something pulled hard at my line, and swept off with it into deep water. Jerking it up, I saw a big fish wriggling (扭来扭去) in the sun. “Uncle!” I cried, looking back in     21     , “I’ve got a fish!” “Not yet,” said my uncle. As he spoke, there was a plash (泼溅) in the water, my hook hung empty from the line. I had lost my     22     . My patience was used up.

I sat down on the nearest stone and     23     to be comforted. Even my uncle promised that there were more fish in the river. He refitted my bait, put the pole again in my hands, and told me to try my luck once more.

“But remember, boy,” he said, “Never     24     catching a fish until he is on dry ground.”

Though years have now passed, I have always been reminded of the fish that I did not catch. When I hear people talk excitedly about something yet undone, I call to mind that scene by the river, and the wise warning of my uncle, “It’s no use to talk too    25    about anything until it’s done.”

I love college and I love you for sending me here—I’m very, very happy, and so excited every moment of the time that I can hardly sleep. You can’t imagine how different it is from the John Grier Home. I never dreamed there was such a place in the world. I’m feeling sorry for everybody who isn’t a girl and the girls who can’t come here. I am sure the college you attended when you were a boy wasn’t so nice.

My room is up in a tower that used to be the ward (病房) before the new hospital was built. There are three other girls on the same floor of the tower—an older girl who wears glasses and is always asking us to be a little quieter, and two new students named Sallie and Julia. Sallie has red hair and a turn-up nose and is quite friendly. Julia comes from one of the first families in New York and hasn’t known me yet.

Sallie and Julia live in one room. The older girl and I have single rooms. Usually new students can’t get this kind of rooms. They are very rare, but I got one without even asking. I suppose registrars (教务主任) didn’t think it would be right to ask a well-raised child like the older girl to share a room with a foundling (弃婴). You see there are advantages!

The room with the name Jerusha Abbott on the door is mine. It is on the north-west corner with two windows and a view. After I lived in a ward for eighteen years with twenty roommates, it is quiet and calm for me to be alone. This is the first chance I’ve ever had to know Jerusha Abbott. I think I’m going to like her.

Yours sincerely,

Jerusha Abbott

29.From the first paragraph, we know that the college is ________.

A.the same as the John Grier Home

B.a great place for the writer to stay

C.a place where the writer can’t sleep well

D.a wonderful place for both boys and girls

30.How does the writer feel when she stays in her room alone?

A.Peaceful.                B.Bored.                   C.Curious.                 D.Unhappy.

31.What does the underlined word “They” in the third paragraph refer to?

A.New students.         B.Older girls.             C.The registrars.         D.Single rooms.

32.What can we infer (推测) from the letter?

A.The writer used to be a foundling.

B.The writer has never lived in a ward.

C.The older girl comes from a poor family.

D.Jerusha Abbott is one of the writer’s friends.

C

Awakening of Insects (惊蛰) fell on March 5 and ended on March 20 this year. Its date slightly changes each year because of the lunar calendar system. It shows that animals sleeping in winter are awakened by spring thunder and the earth begins to come back to life.

Spring thunder cracks the sky

An old Chinese saying goes, “If the first spring thunder crashes before the Awakening of Insects, there will be unusual weather that year.” Around the Awakening of Insects, the earth becomes humid (潮湿的) and the hot air near the surface rises. At the same time, the cold dry air from the north is strong and creates winds. When the two airflows (气流) come together, thunder forms during this time.

Spring ploughing (耕作)

The Awakening of Insects is important to farmers because they take it as the beginning of the busiest time for farm work. During this time, most areas of China see the quickest rise in temperatures, usually reaching above 10 degrees. There is also a big increase in sunshine, which provides good conditions for farming.

__________

Around the Awakening of Insects, some animals wake up, and so do fish. They swim from deep water to shallow water in search of food, ready to have babies. It is a perfect time for fishing. Fishing can help people relax in body and mind, especially for people living in the city. Driving to the countryside, fishing in a lake, bathing in the sunlight, enjoying the singing birds and beautiful flowers make a perfect weekend in spring.

Eating pears

Eating pears around the Awakening of Insects is a common practice in China. As the weather gets warmer and the air becomes drier, people will feel their mouths are dry, which can cause colds or coughs. Pears which are sweet, juicy and cold may stop a cough. So pears are highly recommended during the Awakening of Insects.

33.Thunder forms around the Awakening of Insects because _________.

A.the hot air near the surface goes up

B.animals sleeping in winter all wake up

C.the cold dry air from the south spreads

D.the hot humid air meets the cold dry air

34.The writer tells the importance of the Awakening of Insects to farmers by ________.

A.showing time      B.giving examples       C.explaining reasons      D.presenting numbers

35.Which of the following is the most suitable for ________?

A.Going fishing

B.Swimming in deep water

C.Driving to the countryside

D.Enjoying beautiful flowers

36.Which sentence is TRUE according to the passage?

A.Eating pears can cause colds or coughs.

B.People who live in cities may like fishing a lot.

C.Awakening of Insects begins on March 5 every year.

D.Temperature rises slowly during the Awakening of Insects.

Jane Goodall was born in England, on April 3, 1934. At eight, Jane was attracted by the Dr. Dolitle books and dreamed of living with the animals in Africa.

After finishing school, Jane took on a few jobs including waitressing and working for a film company. She saved every cent for her goal.

At 23, she left for Kenya in Africa. There she met the famous scientist Dr. Louis, who offered her a job in a nature reserve. Dr. Louis believed Jane was the right person to study the chimpanzees because she had great interest in animals and nature and knew a lot about them. Dr. Louis found Jane hadn’t received formal training at school, but this was an advantage because she wouldn’t be influenced by traditional thoughts. So Dr. Louis decided to send her to the Gombe Stream Game Reserve (GSGR) to study wild chimpanzees.

In 1960, Jane arrived at the GSGR. The early weeks there were hard. Jane had a serious fever. After getting well, she was challenged by terrible local environment.

Thick trees and bushes made it difficult for her to go through the reserve. And often she hiked hundreds of miles without seeing a chimpanzee. Even when some chimpanzees were found, they ran away in fear. Later, Jane learned to communicate with them.

Finally, an older chimp accepted Jane and other group members also allowed her to watch them.

With years of hard work, Jane made groundbreaking discoveries. Chimpanzees hunt for meat, use tools, and even make tools. And chimpanzees have feelings just like human beings. These findings made many scientists think that their old ideas about the animal might be wrong.

After living in Gombe for many years, Jane began to worry because chimpanzees were losing their homes as a result of deforestation. Some people were even hunting them for food and experiments. She began travelling, asking people to save the chimpanzees and forests. In 1977, she founded the Jane Goodall Institute (JGI), a global conservation organization. Later, the organization launched programs which encourage young people around the world to join in protecting the environment, wildlife, or their communities.

Jane is still hard at work today. When she has time, she returns to her Gombe home. She walks into the forest and sits down quietly. She smiles as she watches the chimpanzees.

37.Which is the correct order of the following events about Jane?

1.Jane worked for Dr. Louis in Kenya.

2.Jane fell in love with animals in Africa.

3.Jane made money to achieve her goal.

4.Jane took actions on wildlife protection.

5.Jane made surprising findings about chimpanzees.

6.Jane met difficulties when studying chimpanzees in GSGR.

A.b→c→a→e→d→f    B.b→c→a→f→e→d    C.c→b→f→a→e→d    D.c→b→f→d→a→e

38.Why was Jane chosen to study further on chimpanzees in GSGR?

A.Because of her working experience in Kenya.

B.Because of her rich knowledge about nature.

C.Because of her great love for animals.

D.Because of her open mind about animals.

39.What might people believe about chimpanzees before Jane’s discovery?

A.They eat plants but not meat.

B.They are smart enough to make tools.

C.They can use a long stick to hunt.

D.They smile when they are happy.

40.Which best describes Jane Goodall?

A.Creative and calm.

B.Talented and quiet.

C.Strong-willed and patient.

D.Helpful and confident.

And it was mankind’s first    51    soft landing on the far side of the moon (a “soft” landing is one where the spacecraft lands in a controlled way). Twelve hours    52   , the small Yutu-2 rover (漫游者) was released (释放). With its instruments and camera, it would spend the next months—perhaps even years—   53    the moon’s secrets in this great    54    of human engineering.

There is    55    that such technology seemed impossible to believe by those in ancient China, many of whom even imagined that there was a white rabbit on the moon making medicine, yet these tasks are much more than a dream for space engineers working in China today.

Many of us have had this experience: we lie down in a bed other than our own, perhaps at a friend’s house or in a hotel room, and find it difficult to fall asleep. Is it because the bed is uncomfortable? Maybe, but perhaps there can be other reasons.

According to a new study published in Current Biology, a significant reason is what the scientists call “first night effect”. They believe that one side of the brain acts as a “night watch” to give us a warning about potential (潜在的) dangers. It forces us to stay awake on the first night in a new environment.

For the study, 35 young volunteers were told to sleep in a lab for several days. Meanwhile, researchers watched their brain activities.

According to the researchers, on their first night, the left brains were more active than the right brains and people had a hard time sleeping. However, left-brain activity reduced as days went by, falling even to the point of complete calm. In this process, the volunteers got an increasingly better sleep experience.

The findings suggest that the different rhythms (节奏) of the sides of the brain influence our sleep. When the two sides work differently, the balance between them is broken. Thus, the brain can’t relax and is sensitive to anything strange in the surroundings, just as it is in the daytime.

“At some level, the brain is continuing to analyze (分析) things, even though you don’t realize the analysis,” US professor Jerome Siegel told Smithsonian Magazine. “If something unusual happens—if a door opens or you hear a key in a lock—you can be alert (警惕的).” More surprisingly, this situation is similar to the way some animals sleep. Whales, dolphins, and many birds can sleep with half of their brain while the other half stays awake.

If you have ever had what you think is “first night effect”, researchers suggest that you bring your own pillow or sleep in a room similar to your bedroom next time you sleep away from home.

B)请根据短文内容及首字母提示,填写所缺单词,并将答案填写在答题卡标号为66-75的相应位置上。

Do you ever find yourself doing something without thinking about it? We do lots of things out of habit rather than for any good reason. Learning to c   66    healthy new habits can help you to reach your goals.

What is a habit?

A habit is something you do often, almost without thinking. Scientists say that habits are formed in the brain and i   67    a cause, action and a reward. If you have a habit of watching TV when you get home from school, the cause would be coming home from school; the a   68    is turning on the TV; and the reward might be the happy, relaxed feeling from watching your favorite program.

This good feeling makes you want to do the same thing after school the next day too, and over time it can become a h   69   .

How are habits good for you?

Turning something into a habit means you don’t have to think about it, which is good news when it’s healthy. Good habits can help g   70    against bad ones too, such as worrying. Sadie who is 11, finds her habit of playing with fidget toys (指尖玩具) r   71    stress. “They help me relax, “she says. Scientists believe that nearly half of everything we do every day is out of habit, s   72    forming helpful habits is also a great way to help you to reach your goals.

How can you start to build healthy new habits?

Dr Radha Modgil notes that it’s important to think about why you want to change. “What exactly do you want to a    73    and how are you going to do it?” she asks. When it’s time to begin, “Try the 1% i   74    where every day you improve or change something by 1%. That way you start to see p    75     and you’re not put off by failure.” Remember that forming new habits isn’t always easy but it will be worth it in the end. “Changing habits can change your life,” says Modgil.

参考答案

1.A

故选A。

2.C

【详解】句意:既然你不能解决这个问题,也许你应该向其他人寻求帮助。

考查连词辨析。so因此;but但是;since既然;unless除非。根据“you can’t solve the problem”可知,此处指既然不能解决这个问题,用since引导原因状语从句。
