At Hangzhou Dinglan Experimental Middle School in Zhejiang, an exciting event took place earlier this year. The students weighed a Pig!
Since 2017, the school has built a small ecological (生态的) farm for pigs. Every year, teachers and students work together to discuss and use scientific ways to weigh the pigs. They have used methods like levers (杠杆)and Archimedes5 principle (阿基米德定律). This time, students chose to use Magdeburg hemispheres (马德堡半球).
First, the students used a pump (泵)to get the air out of the hemispheres, and then connected them to a cage where the pig was. When they turned on a switch (开关)to let air in, the pressure inside the hemispheres increased. With a loud “bang”, the hemispheres pulled apart, showing a pressure difference. Then, they worked out the pig’s weight with a special formula (公式),using the pressure difference. Their experiment (实验)worked.
Getting the pig to the test site was quite challenging, however. The pig was much larger than it was last year, making it harder for the students to deal with. “As the pig was about to enter the cage, it suddenly lay down and didn’t move at all,” 13-year-old Liu Nian says. In the end, they managed to push it into the cage.
After experimenting a few times and dealing with the results, the students found that the black pig weighed 165.3 kilograms, very close to its known weight of 154.5 kg.
Besides the fun of the task, the students also deepened their understanding of science through the activity. “We use what we learn in textbooks to solve real problems. This helps us know what we have learned better and makes science even more attractive,” said 14-year-old Hu Yulin.
31.What is Paragraph 3 mainly about?
A.How students did the experiment
B.How difficult the experiment was.
C.What difficulty the students faced.
D.What Magdeburg hemispheres are.
32.How can we describe the result of the experiment?
A.It is far from the known weight.
B.It is very close to the exact weight.
C.It shows the pig’s known weight exactly.
D.The result of each experiment is quite different.
33.What did the students get out of weighing the pig?
A.It helped them find fun in life.
B.It taught them how to raise pigs.
C.It taught them to love animals.
D.It helped them enjoy science better.

On Feb. 15, a new video model called Sora promises to create a video up to a minute long from a short text description. Just tell Sora your idea, and watch it make a video right before your eyes. Sora is described as “eye-popping”, “world-changing”, and “breathtaking, yet scaring.”
The videos from OpenAI’s Sora are full of details. One video of a Tokyo street scene shows that Sora has learned how objects fit together in 3-D: the camera goes into the scene to follow a couple as they walk past a row of shops. Sora knows how things should look in real life.
Sora looks at many videos and learns from them by breaking them into very small bits. It uses these bits to make a new video. The new video is grey at first and very messy. Then, Sora fixes the video until it looks good and smooth. Sora also gets help from ChatGPT, which turns the user’s short sentences into clear instructions. This helps Sora make the video just as you asked.
Sora may find “busy” pictures hard to understand. For example, when a person moves, things around them change. In one video created by Sora, a grandma blows the candle on a birthday cake, but the flame (火焰) doesn’t move. Sora may not be able to tell “left” from “right”.
OpenAI also says that Sora deals with occlusion well. But one problem is that they fail to follow objects when they are out of sight. For example, if a truck passes in front of a street sign, the sign might not reappear afterward.
In a video of a papercraft underwater scene, Sora has added what looks like cuts between different pieces of footage (镜头), and the model has kept the same style between them. But it’s not perfect. In the Tokyo video, cars to the left look smaller than the people walking beside them. They also pop (突然出现) in and out between the trees. “There’s some work to be done,” says Brooks. “For example, if someone goes out of view for a long time, they won’t come back.”
“Sora seems like a very important leap forward,” says Sam Gregory, a human rights organization that specializes in the use and misuse of video technology. “But there are two sides of the coin,” he says. “The meaningful abilities help many more people to be storytellers using video. And there are also possibilities for misuse.”
OpenAI has also realized the risks that come with a video model. The OpenAI team plans to draw on the safety testing. “We’ll need to get more feedback (反馈) and learn more about the types of risks that need to be solved with video before it would make sense for us to put Sora into use,” says Ramesh.
34.Which of the following words has the closest meaning to “occlusion”?
A.being seen B.being followed C.being covered D.being dropped
35.The following sentence would best be placed at the end of _________.
Perhaps it will be an imagination tool or a misinformation machine.
A.Paragraph 4 B.Paragraph 3 C.Paragraph 2 D.Paragraph 1
36.The next part of the passage may be about _________.
A.the safety testing B.the misuse of Sora C.two sides of Sora D.another video model
37.What can most possibly be the writer’s real purpose?
A.To encourage us to use Sora to make short videos.
B.To explain to us how to use Sora to create short videos.
C.To remind us to care about the problems and risks Sora has.
D.To introduce what advantages Sora will bring to our daily life.

There is one thing in the world that’s smaller than your fingernail. But without it, we can’t use nearly all the electronics. It’s the microchip! It is one of the most important inventions in human history. How much do you know about microchips? Here are some basics for you to learn it.
What are microchips?
Not to be confused with potato chips, Microchips are very small electronic devices people use to store and deal with information. A microchip is a set of interconnected electronic components that are imprinted on a very small chip. As microchips have so many connected components, they are also called integrated circuits.
There are mainly two kinds of microchips: logic chips and memory chips. Logic chips are the “brains” of electronic devices—they deal with information to finish a task. Memory chips store information.
Application and importance
Microchips are in everything electrical from computers to cellphones, TVs, cameras, cars, airplanes, appliances and medical equipment. Microchips are also used in GPS tracking devices and identification cards and are used to record activities and information.
Microchips take and process digital information and make it usable right away. For example, a Central Processing Unit (CPU), or processor, is the main chip in a computer. It s responsible for carrying out all the computer’s tasks.
What are microchips made from?
The main ingredient for making microchips is silicon. It’s a chemical element that can be found in rocks, sand, clay and soil. Silicon is a semiconductor, meaning that its conductive properties can become stronger by mixing it with other ingredients. This makes it possible to turn an electrical current on or off.
The silicon used to make microchips mostly comes from silica sand, made of silicon dioxide. Helpfully, it’s everywhere! It’s the second most common element on Earth after oxygen.
How small can microchips be?
One microchip is smaller than a button on your shirt but it has billions of transistors (晶体管). So it’s easy to understand just how small the features on a chip need to be. Chip features are measured in nanometers (纳米). A nanometer is one billionth of a meter. The smaller the features in the patterns created, the more transistors can fit on a chip, and the more the chip can do.
