HARBIN-Jiang Kedong still remembers his teacher’s angry words when he was punished for talking during class——“Can you make money by talking?” Now, he can answer that question. This winter, Jiang became famous as “Brother Left and Right” in China, a host of performances at Harbin Ice-Snow World, a theme park in the capital of Heilongjiang province.

Jiang became a worker of a car factory in 2006. But his factory didn’t develop successfully, so he held several part-time jobs, including as a drummer for a wedding band.

With the development of science and technology, digital music files were used instead of live performances at weddings. Jiang’s drumming career ended, but this experience connected him with the wedding industry.

In 2011, he left the factory to become a wedding host. It was at a wedding that he met the person in charge of performances at the Harbin Ice-snow World, who invited him to the extravaganza (娱乐表演).

The theme park grew from the former Harbin Ice Lantern Festival, which started in 1963.

“My first impression of the park 12 years ago was so big,” said Jiang. “In the following years, I saw it becoming even bigger, and the use of science and technology also improved!”

Over the years, Jiang has enjoyed growing success. In 2019, the number of people following him on social media soared from 50,000 to 600,000. At the time, there were too many visitors at the site. For fear that they would fall and run suddenly, during the interactive session, he would shout: “Left foot, right foot!” This earned him the nickname “Brother Left and Right”.

However, he has also faced some black moments, but he didn’t give up. Instead, he decided to go on with his business online from the park.

“There are ups and downs, it’s the law of nature,” he added. “As long as you work hard, you will be successful one day.”

14. Why was Jiang punished by his teacher?

A Because he shouted in the park.                             B. Because he held part-time job.

17. What can we learn from Jiang Kedong?

C. Well begun is half done.                                     D. No pain, no gain.

Scientists have discovered the world’s largest known field of seagrass with the aid of some unusual helpers: tiger sharks.

Seagrass usually grows in shallow waters. It grows in thick fields, known as meadows (草地). These seagrass meadows help clean the ocean’s water, and provide shelter for lots of sea life. They are also a big help in the fight against climate change. That’s because they store huge amounts of carbon dioxide (二氧化碳). This harmful pollution is making global warming worse. Damaging these seagrass meadows will only further release (释放) this pollution back into the atmosphere.

Though they’re very important, scientists don’t have a good idea of the size and number of the world’s seagrass meadows. Trying to find these meadows from above the sea waters can be quite difficult. The world’s oceans are so large in size that it’s simply not possible to make a deep study of them by diving. So a team of scientists decided to have tiger sharks help with the research. These animals were chosen as research helpers because they spend a lot of their time in and around seagrass meadows.

Researchers attached cameras to the fins (鳍) of seven tiger sharks. The sharks then carried the cameras and travelled for miles over the sea floor. The cameras were designed to fall off after a few hours and then float back up to the surface. Tracking signals helped the scientists find the floating cameras and to collect the videos the sharks had taken.

The scientists learned that the waters around the Bahamas are home to the largest seagrass meadow ever discovered, which could be as large as 92,000 square kilometres. The discovery means that the world has about 40 per cent more seagrass meadows than scientists had thought.

The project demonstrates (示范) a powerful new way to explore the ocean. In other words, underwater animals can help us learn more about life under the sea. Animals like tiger sharks are going to take us to new places that we didn’t even know.

18. How many advantages of seagrass meadows are mentioned in the second paragraph?

A. Two.                       B. Three.                      C. Five.                       D. Six.

19. What is the third paragraph mainly about?

A. The importance of seagrass to the world.

B. The situation that scientists know about seagrass.

C. The possibility that scientists study the meadows further.

D. The reason why scientists need tiger sharks to help with the research.

20 Which best shows the structure of the whole passage?

A. ①/②③④⑤/⑥          B. ①②③④⑤/⑥           C. ①/②③④⑤⑥           D. ①②③/④/⑤⑥

Buck did not read the newspapers. He did not know that trouble was coming for every big dog in California. Men had found gold in Yukon, and these men wanted big, strong dogs to work in the cold and snow of the north.

Buck lived in Mr Miller’s big house in the sunny Santa Clara Valley. There were large gardens and fields of fruit trees around the house, and a river nearby. In a big place like this, of course, there were many dogs. There were house dogs and farm dogs, but they were not important. Buck was the chief dog. He was born here, and this was his place. He was four years old and weighed sixty kilos. He went swimming with Mr Miller’s sons, and walking with his daughters. He carried the grandchildren on his back, and he sat at Mr Miller’s feet in front of the fire in winter.

But this was 1897, and Buck did not know that men and dogs were hurrying to north-west Canada to look for gold. And he did not know that Manuel, one of Mr Miller’s gardeners, needed money for his large family. One day, when Mr Miller was out, Manuel and Buck left the garden together. It was just an evening walk, Buck thought. No one saw them go, and only one man saw them arrive at the railway station. This man talked to Manuel, and gave him some money. Then he tied a piece of rope around Buck’s neck.

Buck growled, and was surprised when the rope was pulled hard around his neck. He jumped at the man. The man caught him and suddenly Buck was on his back with his tongue out of his mouth. For a few moments he was unable to move, and it was easy for the two men to put him into the train.

When Buck woke up, the train was still moving. The man was sitting and watching him, but Buck was too quick for him and he bit the man’s hand hard. Then the rope was pulled again and Buck had to let go.

That evening, the man took Buck to the back room of a bar in San Francisco. The barman looked at the man’s hand and trousers covered in blood.

“How much are they paying you for this?” he asked.

“I only get fifty dollars.”

“And the man who stole him-how much did he get?” asked the barman.

“A hundred. He wouldn’t take less.”

“That makes a hundred and fifty. It’s a good price for a dog like him. Here, help me to get him into this.”

They took off Buck’s rope and pushed him into a wooden box. He spent the night in the box in the back room of the bar. His neck still ached with pain from the rope, and he could not understand what it all meant. What did they want with him, these strange men? And where was Mr Miller?

The next day Buck was carried in the box to the railway station and put on a train to the north.

——Taken from The Call of the Wild
