三、阅读理解(共14小题;每小题2,满分28分)

阅读下面的短文,从各题所给的ABCD四个选项中,选出最佳选项。

A

Animals were the real pioneers of space fight. Let’s learn about some that have been to space.

Fruit flies(果蝇)

On February 20, 1947, the United States sent some fruit flies into space to study the influence that cosmic radiation(宇宙辐射) might have on astronauts in the future. They chose flies because they are genetically(基因上) similar to humans.

When they returned to Earth, the scientists found the flies alive, with no sign of the harm of radiation.

Mice

Mice have long been used to find out more about how space travel will affect the human body. In fact, NASA has recently published a study of mice housed at the International Space Station. It shows that mice quickly adapt to microgravity(适应微重力) conditions.

The very first mouse went into space in 1950, reaching an altitude of 137 km. However, unlike the fruit flies, the mouse died when the rocket broke into parts because of a parachute(降落伞) failure.

Dogs

Laika, a Russian homeless dog, went to space on November 3, 1957. She was picked up on the streets and was thought suitable because she had a gentle temperament(性情) and behaved well. The scientists also believed a homeless dog would be better at dealing with difficult conditions like microgravity than a pet dog.

Laika is famous for being the first animal to travel around the Earth. However, she never returned.

Spiders(蜘蛛)

In 1973, two garden spiders called Anita and Arabella were used in an experiment(实验) to see if they could still build webs in space.

Both spiders managed to build webs, even though the webs were slightly finer than on Earth. The study showed a great deal about the influence of microgravity on motor response(运动反应).

23. What can we learn about the mouse astronaut?

A. It failed to come back alive.                               B. It was the first animal to be sent to space.

C. Its genes were similar to humans.                        D. It couldn’t survive in microgravity conditions.

24. Laika was chosen by the scientists for all the following reasons EXCEPT ________.

A. her good temperament                                          B. her good behavior

C. her ability to deal with microgravity                      D. her identity(身份) as a pet dog

25. What’s the purpose of sending the two spiders to space?

A. To compare the quality of webs they made on Earth and in space.

B. To study the influence of cosmic radiation on their lives.

C. To see how fast they could build webs in space.

D. To see whether they could build webs in space.

B

The Mogao Grottoes(莫高窟) are some Buddhist cave temples(佛教庙宇) in China. This site is near the city of Dunhuang in the northwestern Chinese province of Gansu. This ancient city was once an important place on the ancient Silk Road. So, Dunhuang was a center where not only trade, but also cultural, religious(宗教的), and information exchanges took place.

The Mogao Grottoes are famous for their statues and wall paintings. The Mogao Grottoes have as many as 492 caves. Inside these, more than 2,000 painted statues and about 45,000 square meters of wall paintings can be found.

The first temple in the Mogao Grottoes was built in 366 AD. It is said that a monk(僧人) by the name of Yue Zun once travelled across the area. He had a dream in which a thousand golden Buddhas appeared. Therefore, the monk decided to build a temple. Soon, others followed Yue Zun’s example, and built their own temples into the rock face.

The following centuries saw the rise and fall of many dynasties in China. However, each new dynasty added to the artwork of the Mogao Grottoes. Activity in the Mogao Grottoes reached its peak(顶峰) during the Tang Dynasty. What’s more, the rulers of the Tang Dynasty believed in Buddhism, and the number of cave temples during this period of time grew to over 1,000. With the use of new trade routes in the following centuries, the importance of Dunhuang decreased. After the fall of the Yuan Dynasty, the Mogao Grottoes were given up and largely forgotten by the rest of the world.

In 1961, the importance of the Mogao Grottoes was recognized by the Chinese government, and they became a national monument. In 1987, the Mogao Grottoes were named as a World Heritage Site(世界文化遗产). Over the years, this site has become a tourist attraction.

26 How many statues are there in the Mogao Grottoes?

A. About 492.              B. Less than 45,000.      C. More than 2,000.      D. About 2,492.

27 What does the underlined word “decreased” probably mean?

A. rose                           B. dropped                      C. balanced                     D. zeroed

28. From the last paragraph, we know that ________.

A. the Mogao Grottoes were discovered again in 1961

B. most of the Mogao Grottoes were built in the Tang Dynasty

C. the ruler of the Yuan Dynasty led to the fall of the Mogao Grottoes

D. new dynasties also played a role in the development of the Mogao Grottoes

C

You’re sitting at the dinner table with your dog. You know you shouldn’t give dogs human food, but when you look down, those cute puppy(小狗) eyes are almost impossible to refuse.

Why does this kind of thing happen? A Japanese scientist, Miho Nagasawa, seems to have found the answer: it has something to do with what is called “the cuddle chemical” (拥抱化合物).

In order to better understand how the cuddle chemical works between dogs and humans, Nagasawa and his team carried out an experiment(实验). They tested the levels of the cuddle chemical in dogs and humans, and then put them in a room to interact(互动) with each other.

While in the room, the humans patted(爱抚) the dogs, spoke to the dogs, and looked into the dogs’ eyes. Then the scientists tested their levels of the cuddle chemical again.

The researchers found that the levels of the cuddle chemical were higher in both humans and dogs after they had interacted. However, the levels were the highest in the humans and dogs that had simply looked into each other’s eyes, without much patting or talking.

The results of this study can also tell us a lot about the history of the bond(关系) between humans and dogs.

It all started tens of thousands of years ago. Wolves used to follow humans when they were hunting. Humans realized that they could use the wolves to help with the hunt, and finally, both species(物种) began to work together toward survival. Over time, the wolves and humans started to depend on each other. And they started to bond with each other. These changes are what caused some of the wolves to turn into what we now know as dogs.

This process depended a great deal on the bond that humans formed with them. And according to Nagasawa’s study, the bond was formed with the help of the cuddle chemical.

29. According to the text, the purpose of the experiment was to ________.
