①Would you like to get fewer colds and feel better? Would you like to have a taste of a special plant? Would you like to keep a plant with little care? An Aloe Vera plant could be just what the scientists may suggest!

②Growing Aloe Vera plants at home can make the air clean and fresh. Studies have shown that they give off oxygen(O₂) and take away harmful things from the air. With clean and fresh air, you are more likely to stay away from colds, sore throats and dry coughs. And even if you do get sick, Aloe Vera plants may help you get better from the illness faster.

③Did you know that Aloe Vera plants can be used as medicine? Aloe Vera gel(胶体) helps to deal with the pain of burns. And it also helps with itchiness(痒) caused by insect bites. To get this gel, just cut off a part of the plant, peel it, and put the gel on the affected skin(患处). This easy-to-get and safe-to-use medicine is available to you all year round.

④Apart from medical use, Aloe Vera plants are also popular in food industry. Whether you are interested in Aloe juice or crazy about Aloe yogurt, you’ll easily find them in the supermarket. Aloe Vera can also go with other vegetables to make a safe dish on your dinner table.

▲   They like dry, warm air with bright light, so they grow best when placed near a window. Aloe Vera plants are able to keep water in their leaves. So, they do not need to be watered so often as most houseplants. Just wait until the earth is completely dry before you water them. When watering, make sure the earth is wet enough so that it can last for a long time. That’s all you need to do to to take care of an Aloe Vera plant. Isn’t it the perfect plant for lazy and forgetful gardeners.

As awareness(意识)of children’s health is increased in China, Beijing has created a new system of teaching and testing physical education as it tries to improve students’ fitness levels. This autumn school term, students in Grade 7 will become the first group of students in the capital to take part in the adjusted(调整的)system for middle school students.

In December, 2021, education authorities(官方)in Beijing announced changes to physical education, which will finally be applied during all nine years of compulsory school education. “Education authorities will add more progress assessments(过程性评价)to PE course to encourage children to start physical exercise at an earlier age and do it on a regular basis,” Li Yi, a spokesman for the government, said at a news conference.

According to the new assessment rules, the junior school students must choose four sports for their PE exams from a list of 22 sports, including running, jump rope, standing long jump, table tennis, badminton, swimming and gymnastics. Fourteen new sports were added to the list.

Zhao Xing, a mother of two school-age children, says she is pleased that swimming has been added to the program as her 5-year-old son loves the sport and he often practices swimming. However, she wonders if her daughter will benefit from the changes as she is not a fan of sports.

However, the new PE assessment rules have raised the concern of some parents who worry that the burden of competition will become too much for the children after more sports are added to the list.

“I’m wondering whether I should ask my son to take more after-school courses such as badminton and swimming in order to help him get higher PE scores,” said Dong Pingping, a mother of a junior school student. “He is already fully occupied with other subjects. A new course means more money and energy need to be spent.”

Li, the spokesman, said that the list of 22 sports may be changed. “The list will be adjusted according to the social economic growth, popularity of every sport, as well as the students’ physical quality development,” he added.

41. How many sports must the junior school students choose for their PE exams?

A. Four.                       B. Fourteen.                 C. Twenty-two.             D. Thirty-six.

43. How did Dong Pingping feel about the new PE assessment rules?

A. Pleased.                   B. Excited.                   C. Worried.                  D. Curious.

44. What’s the best title for the passage?

A. The list of sports will be adjusted

B. Fourteen new sports were added to the list

C. Beijing starts a new PE testing system for students

D. Parents talk about a new PE testing system for students

Ever wondered why your virtual(虚拟的)home helper doesn’t understand your questions? Or why your navigation app took you on the side street instead of the highway? In a study published April 21st in the journal iScience, Italian researchers, Arianna Pipitone and Antonio Chella, designed a robot that “thinks out loud”.

To explore how inner speech might influence a robot’s actions, the researchers built a robot called Pepper that speaks to itself. It has the ability to reason and think. They then asked people to set the dinner table with Pepper according to etiquette(礼仪)rules. In one experiment, the user asked Pepper to lay the napkin at the wrong place, going against the rules. Pepper started asking itself a series of self-directed questions and concluded that the user might be mistaken. To be sure, Pepper confirmed the user’s order, which led to further inner speech.

“Ehm, this situation troubles me. I would never break the rules, but I can’t make the user unhappy, so I’m doing what he wants,” Pepper said to itself, laying the napkin where it was required to be. Through Pepper’s inner voice, the user can learn Pepper was facing a difficult situation and solved it by prioritizing the user’s order.

Comparing Pepper’s actions with and without inner speech, Pipitone and Chella discovered the robot had a higher task-completion rate when having self-dialogue.

However, some people find the robot spends more time completing tasks when it talks to itself. The robot’s inner speech is also limited to the knowledge that researchers gave it. Pepper’s designers still say their work provides a framework(构架)to further explore how self-dialogue can help robots focus, plan, and learn. “In some ways, we are creating a generational(世代的)robot that likes to chat. From navigation apps and the camera on your phone to medical robots in the operation rooms, machines and computers alike can take advantage of this chatty feature,” says Chella.

45. Why does the writer ask two questions at the very beginning of the passage?

A. To draw the reader’s attention to the topic.

B. To show the writer likes electronic products.

C. To tell the reader about the history of robots.

D. To prove the writer often faces trouble in life.

46. Why was Pepper asked to lay the napkin at the wrong place?

A. To see how much time Pepper spent laying the napkin.

B. To confirm how popular Pepper was among its users.

C. To test how many etiquette rules Pepper remembered.

D. To study how self-dialogue might influence Pepper’s actions.

47. What does the underlined word “prioritizing” in Paragraph 3 mean?

A. repeating                    B. dealing with… first      C. going against              D. complaining about

48. What can we infer from the passage?

A. The designers are proud of their work about Pepper.

B. Pepper has already been in use in the operation rooms.

C. Pepper’s inner speech depends on its user’s communication skills.

D. With or without inner speech, Pepper could complete a task equally well.

Buck could not read the newspapers. So he did not know that there was trouble ahead. The trouble was for every dog with strong muscles(肌肉)and warm long hair, from Seattle to southern California. Some men had found a yellow metal(金属)in the Arctic darkness, and thousands of other men were rushing there. Those men wanted dogs that were heavy, with strong muscles for working hard and furry coats to protect them from the cold.

Buck lived at a big house in a sunny valley in California which was owned by Judge Miller. And Buck ruled over it all. He was born there, and had lived there for the four years of his life. There were many other dogs, but they lived together in the Kennels(狗窝), or inside the house. But Buck was neither a house dog nor a kennel dog. The whole of Judge Miller’s lands was his. Buck was king-king over all the crawling, flying things of Judge Miller’s lands, humans included.

His father, Elmo, a huge St Bernard, had been Judge Miller’s inseparab(不可分离的)companion. And when he died, Buck took his father’s place. He was not so large—he weighed only sixty kilograms—for his mother, Shen, had been a Scottish sheepdog. He had had a good life and he was proud of himself, for he had not become a house dog. Hunting and other outdoor activities had hardened his muscles, and swimming had made him healthy.

This was Buck in the autumn of 1897, when the discovery of gold in the Klondike brought men from everywhere to the frozen north. But Buck couldn’t read the newspapers. And he did not know that Manuel, one of the gardener’s helpers, was not a good man. Manuel gambled(赌博)and wasted the little money he had. And one time when Judge Miller was away on business, and his sons were busy with an athletics(竞技)club, Manuel did something terrible. No one saw him and Buck go off on what Buck thought was a walk. No one saw them arrive at the railway station, where Manuel sold Buck to a man who was waiting for him.

Manuel put a rope round Buck’s neck, under his collar. Buck accepted this because he knew Manuel, but when the rope was given to another man, he growled(发出低吠声)dangerously. And when the rope was tightened round neck, he started to choke(窒息)and jumped at the man in anger. The man fought him off and forced Buck to lie on his back, and tightened the rope even more. Buck had never been treated so badly in his life, and he had never been so angry. But then his strength drained(消耗)away and he soon became unconscious(失去意识的). He was still unconscious when the train arrived and the two men threw him into the baggage car.

When talking about livestreaming, you might think of makeup vloggers and movie stars. But Zeng Qinghuan, a 30-year-old from Xinhua County in Loudi, Hunan, has turned her whole village into a livestreaming room, using e-commerce to help her people live a better life.

Known as “Xiangmei Xinbao” on Douyin, Zeng now has more than 3 million followers and almost 40 million “likes”. During the past two years, she has posted about 370 short videos showing the culture and life of people in her hometown. Through livestreaming, she has sold more than 100 million yuan worth of local agricultural products, like fermented tofu (腐乳), preserved pork and dried sweet potatoes.

Zeng used to study fashion design and work in big cities. She returned to her village to care for her sick grandmother, but later found that she could also build a career there. “I’m a daughter of the great mountains. I can also be a contributor to rural development in this new era (时代),” she said.

Rural revitalization (振兴) is a key part of China’s 14th Five-Year Plan(2021-2025). In June 2021, a law took effect to promote it as a national strategy, including attracting talent and protecting the natural environment.

Zeng hopes her experience can encourage more young people to return to their rural hometowns and make a difference. In 2021, after she became a deputy (代表) of the Loudi Municipal People’s congress (市人民代表大会), she put forward a proposal (建议) called “each village has one product and one livestreaming host of its own”.
