“You called him ‘Fat Face’,” the judge said. Toad had no answer to this. Then Badger stood up. “May I say a few words?” he said. “Certainly, Mr, Badger,” the judge said.

“I knew his father,” Badger said. “I knew his uncle and his aunt. He is a sad, foolish animal. We should all feel sorry for him.”

Badger sat down.

The judge said. “It is lunch time and I am hungry, so I don’t want to listen to anything more. It is clear that you are guilty, Toad. And this court must punish you. You will go to prison(监狱)for twenty years. Have you anything to say?”

Toad was very unhappy. Twenty years in prison was a very long time. He stood up as tall as he could and said, “No, Fat Face.”

He turned to everyone in the court. “You are all Fat Faces. I am Toad. The Great and Famous Toad. You cannot send me to prison!”

“Oh, yes, I can,” the judge said. “And you will go to prison for forty years for calling me ‘Fat Face’.” Then the judge said to the policemen, “Take him away.”

And they led Toad away to prison.

Poor Toad was very unhappy in prison. His room was small and very cold. The food was bad, and the bed was hard. Toad could not sleep, and he usually felt quit ill.

Luckily, however, one of the jailer’s daughters liked him. She also felt sorry for him. Her name was Phoebe. She worked in the prison and brought Toad his food every day.

“I don’t think you should be here, Toad,” she said.

“You didn’t hurt anybody. The only thing you did wrong was to call the judge ‘Fat Face’.” She didn’t know that he had stolen a car. The judge had not sent him to prison for that. He had sent him to prison for calling him ‘Fat Face’. “And you are right,” she said. “The judge does have a fat face. It’s wrong to keep you in prison for that.” “That’s what I tell myself every day,” Toad said. “I am the Great and Famous Toad. I live at Toad Hall. I have many friends.”

With Phoebe’s help, Toad dressed up as a washerwoman and left the prison later.

She picked up the key and went back to the door. But she was too big now. She sat down and started to cry again. She cried and cried and cried. Her tears fell on the ground and soon there was a pool of water around her.

PITTER, PATTER, PITTER, PATTER. She looked up. The White Rabbit was running towards her. He had a fan in one hand and a pair of white gloves in the other. As he ran he muttered. “Oh, the Duchess(公爵夫人)! The Duchess. She’s going to be very angry.”

Alice whispered “Sir, please”, but her voice frightened the Rabbit. He dropped the fan and the gloves and ran away quickly down a dark passage. Alice put the key on the table, picked up the gloves and the fan and started to fan herself.

“How strange everything is today,” she said sadly. “Yesterday things were normal. Did I change during the night? Am I a different girl today? If I am a different girl, who am I? Am I Mabel?” (Mabel was a girl at Alice’s school)

“No, I can’t be! I know a lot of things and she knows—well, only a few.”

Realizing (实现) a childhood dream in Shaoxing

In a low-rise rental house of less than 20 square meters in the suburbs of Shaoxing, the piled up waste products (废品) and dirty kitchen utensils are put together with colorful oil paintings (油画).

The author of these paintings is Wei Guangming. Born in 1972, Wei went to Shaoxing to work for more than 10 years. Besides collecting waste products, he realizes his childhood dreams by learning to paint by himself. He gets up at 6 o’clock every day to paint, and following afternoons in which he collects waste, he comes back to paint happily till late at night.

Wei, whose wife and four children live in his hometown in Hubei province, misses them very much. He can get about 3,000($464.70)yuan per month by collecting waste products, and around 4,000 yuan per month by selling paintings. His daughter goes to school in his hometown, and most of his income is sent to his family. He is frugal (节俭的) with his spending, and most of the remaining money is used to buy paint brushes and books.

With his growing popularity on the Internet, his current order is a bit overwhelming.

You love reading. You read your favourite book a thousand times and you want to read something new, but you don’t know what you want to read. If you have the right information, it is easy to choose (选择) a good book!

Go to the library first. Answer these questions. What writers do you like? What are your interests? If the library has computers, you can use it to find a book by its writer, or keywords of your interests. If you like a certain book, search the book up and read its summary (概要). That will help you decide if (是否) the book is right for you.

Search your house next. Often good books are quietly lying somewhere in your own house. Maybe you forget about one. Maybe you will find some books that you can read, and they won’t cost you any money.

Then, ask someone to recommend a good book. You can ask your older brothers or sisters, your mom, your dad, your best friend, or your teachers. They know you well and can often make wonderful book recommendations.

Finally, read the first part of each book. Of course, if you have many books, this can take much time. But reading the first part of each book can help you know what books and genres (体裁) of books you like, and you won’t have a hard time looking for books again.

It is now the end of November, and Holmes and I are sitting by the fire in our flat in Baker Street on a cold and foggy night. We start talking about the Baskerville case.

“I now know everything about the case, Watson,” says Holmes,

“Perhaps you can tell me about it,” I say.

“Certainly” says Holmes. “Let’s go back in time to Baskerville Hall. As soon as I see the portrait of Hugo Baskerville hanging in the dining room, I know that Stapleton is a Baskerville, too. Indeed Stapleton is a son of Rodger Baskerville, the younger brother of Sir Charles. Rodger runs away to South America and disappears. No-one knows that he marries and has a child. The child is Stapleton and his real name is Rodger Baskerville, like his father. Young Rodger gets married in South America, changes his name and goes to the north of England, where he opens a school.

“There Stapleton discovers that only two people separate him from the Baskerville fortune. So he finds a home near Baskerville Hall. And soon he makes friends with Sir Charles Baskerville and with the neighbours. Old Sir Charles tells Stapleton about the legend of the hound and prepares the way for his own death. Stapleton knows that the old man’s heart is weak. And he also knows that Sir Charles believes the legend of the hound. And so he gets the idea to frighten Sir Charles to death with a hound.”

“Stapleton buys the huge dog in London and takes it to Devon by train. He walks across the moor with it to make sure no-one sees him with the dog. He already knows a safe way through the Grimpen Mire thanks to his interest in butterflies. He finds a hiding place for the animal in the old tin mine. And he keeps his hound here while he is waiting for his chance.

In the evening I walk across the moor and up the hill. I want to find the rock because I saw the tall thin man there. I want to find out who he is and why he follows us. It is a beautiful evening. Everything is quiet. Suddenly I see an old cave(洞穴). I walk towards it. Perhaps this is the stranger’s hiding place. It is very quiet. I go to the entrance with my gun and look in. The place is empty. But there is bread and the remains(残留)of a fire inside the cave. This must be his place! So I decide to hide in the cave and wait. After a while I hear footsteps.

“It is a lovely evening, my dear Watson,” says a voice l know well. “How are you?”

The tall thin stranger is at the entrance—it is Sherlock Holmes!

“Holmes! I’m so happy to see you,” I say as I get up.“What are you doing here? Why are you not in London?”

“I’m trying to find out what is happening,” replies Holmes. “And I’ve got some interesting information. Miss Stapleton is not Mr Stapleton’s sister, but his wife.”

“Good heavens, Holmes! Are you sure of this? How do you know that the woman is his wife?”

“You say that Stapleton was a teacher. It is easy to find teachers. I find that a teacher took a lot of money from a school in the north of England. Then he disappeared with his wife. I also discover that this teacher loves butterflies. The teacher is obviously our Mr Stapleton.”

“Look, it is getting dark, Watson, you must go back to Baskerville Hall and stay with Sir Henry.”
