We put all our things, including the canoe, on the big raft (木筏) and set off down the river for the town of Cairo, where the Mississippi and the Ohio rivers meet.

We didn’t get to Cairo. We ran into a thick fog (雾) on the river one night and we couldn’t see a yard in front of us.The next day it cleared but there was no sight of a town that looked like Cairo.

All over the world the need for more laptops (笔记本电脑) and computers increases each year.Networks have been part of our life.Probably everyone with a portable device (移动设备) has once logged on to a public WiFi network without paying for it, while they are having a coffee, on a train, in a shopping mall or at a hotel. However, is this kind of public WiFi network safe?

Some networks are better protected than others because encryption (加密) methods are used. Therefore, they are safer than others. But a survey in 2015 showed that more than 950 million records were not protected, including addresses, emails, birth dates, phone numbers, passwords and so on.These open WiFi networks are really not safe, because it is very easy for hackers (黑客) to break into the operating system and get people’s private (个人的) information.

Most mobile phones and laptops, by themselves, search and connect to WiFi networks. They usually prefer a network with a connection that has been used before.Hackers’ devices are able to record these searches and look like the trusted WiFi networks. When these phones and laptops log on to the networks which are not real, hackers can easily steal their private information.

So next time, when we want to use our laptops or our phones in public places which offer free WiFi networks, please think it twice or take safe measures before using them.

The Spanish flu (流感) also known as the 1918 Mu pandemic (流行病) was a deadly pandemic in recent history. It spread worldwide during the year 1918—1919.The virus infected (感染) 500 million people about a third of the world’s population at the time.

The outbreak of the Spanish flu was caused by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian (禽类) origin.Historians now believe that World War I could have been partly responsible for spreading the virus.Lack of hygiene (卫生) and malnourishment (营养不良) may have also been responsible for weakening the immune system.

There hasn’t been any agreement among scientists about the origin (起因) of the virus. The 1918 flu was first observed in Europe, the United States, and parts of Asia before swiftly spreading around the world. It is believed that social media was the main reason why this pandemic was called the Spanish flu.To keep morale (斗志), World War I censors (审查官) reduced early reports of illness and death rate in Germany, the United Kingdom, France, and the United States. However, because Spain wasn’t at war with any country, newspapers were free to report the epidemic’s (疫情) effects in Spain, such as the serious illness of King Alfonso XIII.These stories created a false impression of Spain as especially hard hit. This gave rise to the name “Spanish flu”.

In 2015, nearly a century after the Spanish flu hit, the World Health Organization (WHO) called on people to follow best practices in naming new human infectious (传染性的) diseases to reduce unnecessary negative effects on nations, economies, and people.

Unlike most influenza outbreaks (流感爆发) that largely kill the very young and the very old, with a higher survival rate for those in between, the Spanish flu pandemic resulted in a higher than expected death rate for young adults. The death was estimated to be at least 50 million worldwide, possibly as high as 100 million, making it one of the most serious pandemics in human history.

66.The Spanish flu also ____________ the 1918 Mu Pandemic.During the year 1918—1919, a third of the world’s population ____________ by the virus.

67.The flu _____________ by an H1N1 virus with genes of avian (禽类) origin. However, scientists ____________ on the origin of the virus.

68.____________ of the pandemic (流行病) being called the Spanish flu was social media.Spain wasn’t at war with any country.____________, it was free for newspapers to report the epidemic’s (疫情) effects in Spain.

69.To reduce ____________ on nations, economies and people, the World Health Organization (WHO) called on people ____________ best practices in naming new human infectious (传染性的) diseases.

参考答案

II、单项选择(共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)

1、C

【解析】

【详解】句意:现在政府鼓励一对夫妇生三个孩子,但许多年轻夫妇不想要第三个孩子。

考查冠词用法。根据“Now the government encourages a couple to have three children”可知,前文提到的是生三个孩子,也就是三胎政策,所以此处应该是特指第三个孩子,故选C。

2、B

【解析】

【详解】句意:可怕的事故发生在一个狂风暴雨的夜晚。

考查介词辨析。in后加年、月和季节;on后加具体某一天;at后加具体时刻;to到。根据“a windy and stormy night.”可知,具体到某一天或前面有形容词修饰时,应用on。故选B。
