一、阅读理解

When Dorothy woke up — she did not know how much later — the house was on the ground. It was in a field full of flowers, and there were hundreds of beautifully colored birds flying around and singing. Not far away, there was a stream with clear, fresh water.

Dorothy was still under her bed. She got up and left the house. She was surprised to see three little men and a little woman walking towards her. They were very strangely dressed. The men’s clothes were blue as their hats, but the woman’s clothes were white and had little stars all over them.

When they saw Dorothy, they walked up to her and bowed.

“Welcome to the land of the Munchkins,” one of the little men said. “We thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. Now our people are free.”

“I’m afraid you are making a mistake,” Dorothy said. “I didn’t kill any witch.”

“Your house did,” one of the little men said. “ Look!”

He pointed to the house. Dorothy saw two feet sticking out from under it.

“Oh!” Dorothy shouted. “The house fell on her. What can I do?”

“There is nothing to do,” the little woman said. “The Wicked Witch of the East is dead, and the Munchkins are grateful to you.”

“Are you a Munchkin?” Dorothy asked.

“No, but I am their friend,” the little woman said. “I am the Witch of the North.”

The Lion took them on his back to jump across the ditch(沟), and he was tired after his five big jumps. Later in the afternoon they came to a wide river. They could see a beautiful country on the other side of it. There were green fields and a lot of flowers. They could also see the yellow brick road.

“Hòw can we cross the river?” Dorothy asked. “There isn’t a tree tall enough to fall across this river.”

“Easy!” the Scarecrow (稻草人) said. “The Tin Woodman will use his axe to build a raft(木筏).”

And this is what the Tin Woodman did. And while he was busy making the raft, Dorothy found some wild fruit and nuts, she ate hungrily. Then, because it was taking the Tin Woodman a long time to finish the raft, Dorothy lay down and went to sleep.

The night passed without any problems, and the next morning the raft was ready. They all got on the raft. The Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow had very long poles(杆子). They pushed their poles into the mud(淤泥) at the bottom of the river and the raft moved. But the water was flowing(流动) very fast. It took them down the river and far from the yellow brick road on the other side. The Tin Woodman and the Scarecrow couldn’t touch the bottom with their poles any more.

“This is very bad,” the Tin Woodman said. “We’re going towards the land of the Wicked Witch of the West” “We must go back and find the yellow brick road,” the Scarecrow said. He pushed his pole very hard into the mud but it got stuck. He couldn’t pull it out again! The raft moved away and he was still holding his pole in the middle of the river.

She doesn’t worry about her mother and father, but she worries about John and Michael. They are starting to forget their old life. Perhaps this is because there are so many exciting adventures(冒险) in Neverland.

One night, for example, the Indians(印第安人) attack(攻击) their house underground. Some of the Indians go into the holes in the trees and can’t get out again. The other Indians have to pull them out like corks from bottles.

But this is their last evening on Neverland. Wendy puts John and Michael and the Lost Boys to bed. She starts to tell them their favourite story. Usually Peter puts his hands over his ears because he doesn’t like this story, but tonight he sits and listens with the others.

In this story, Mr. Darling and Mrs. Darling have three children, says Wendy. “These children have a nurse called Nana. One evening Mr. Darling puts Nana outside in the yard because he is angry with her. That night the children fly away,” Wendy continues, “to Neverland. Now, just think about the unhappy parents without their children. The mother always leaves the window open for her children to fly back.”

“You’re wrong about mothers, Wendy,” Peter says angrily. “They lock the window. They forget you. They put another little boy in your bed.”

Suddenly, John and Michael both cry together: “Wendy, let’s all go home.”

At last Wendy and the children fly back to London and Mr. and Mrs. Darling adopt(收留) the Lost Boys.

The Lion looks at the ditch and says, “I can jump over it.”

“Can you?” the Scarecrow says. “That’s good! You can take us across on your back, one by one.”

“Who wants to go first?” the Lion says. He’s a little afraid first but he wants to help his friends.

“Me!” the Scarecrow says and he gets on the Lion’s back. The Lion jumps across the ditch easily. Then he jumps back and takes Dorothy and Toto. Finally he takes the Tin Woodman across the ditch.

The Lion is tired after his five big jumps.

【导语】本文是《秘密花园》的节选。主要讲了Dorothy和房子一起落到了一处鸟语花香的地方,当地的人们过来鞠躬感谢桃乐茜,因为她的房子正好压死了女巫的故事。

1.推理判断题。根据文章第二段中的“She was surprised to see three little men and a little woman walking towards her. They were very strangely dressed”可推知,Dorothy离开家的时候,四个穿着奇怪衣服的人让Dorothy感到惊讶,故选A。

2.词句猜测题。根据文章第四段“ ‘Welcome to the land of the Munchkins,’ one of the little men said. ‘We thank you for killing the Wicked Witch of the East. Now our people are free.’ ”和倒数第三段中的“The Wicked Witch of the East is dead, and the Munchkins are grateful to you”可知,“are grateful to”和“thank you”同义,即“感谢你”,故选A。
