When we meet someone for the first time, we usually get a little sense of what kind of person he or she is by the way he or she shakes hands, talks, or walks. In the age of social networking, however, first impressions (印象) are sometimes made even before we meet someone in person — that is, by looking at their profile photos (头像).

According to a recent study, these profile photos say a lot about people’s personality (个性). For example, outgoing people are more likely to pose in an unusual way and use things such as glasses or a guitar in their profile photos because they enjoy new and exciting experiences.

However, neurotic (神经质的) people often hold back their bad feelings. They try to avoid showing their faces. So they often use something like a pet, a car or a building.

“The colors used in them also give us some information about the photos’ owners. For example, outgoing people were found to have the most colorful profile photos, as they want to show themselves off.” the researchers wrote.

“Although social media photos usually mean an extension (延伸) of oneself, they also allow a user to show his or her own personality and how perfect they can be,” according to the researchers.

So, when choosing a profile photo, maybe we should ask ourselves first what kind of photo we’d like to show. After all, first impressions always last.

Trouble in the Cloakroom

“I hate them! I really hate them!”, shouted Tom angrily.

Tara and Ziggy looked at their friend. They couldn’t believe it. He was really angry!

“Arjun is OK now,” said Tara, trying to calm Tom down.

The three friends were in the park after school. They were talking about their friend Arjun. Arjun was the youngest in the class and today two bullies (霸凌者) pushed him against a locker and hurt him. Arjun fell and cut his head. Now he has five stitches (划痕) in his forehead.

Heston High School was a nice, peaceful place until Brian and Mark arrived a few months ago. Brian and Mark were bullies and their favourite trouble place was the school cloakroom (卫生间). That morning they hurt Arjun, maybe because he was smaller and younger than everyone else in the class.

The teachers knew that there were some bullying incidents (事件) at school. But most kids didn’t want to report the incidents. So bullying at Heston High wasn’t an official problem.

“Brian and Mark must pay!” repeated Tom. He was walking around in circles and hitting the palm of his left hand with his right fist.

“Can’t you see? You’re behaving like the bullies,” Tara said sadly. Ziggy looked at Tara. He knew Tom very well. Tom wasn’t usually violent (暴力的). In fact, he usually solved problems in a polite way. Tara hated bullies and she didn’t like Tom being so angry. Tom hated bullies, too. It made him afraid.

“No. I’m not like Brian and Mark,” replied Tom. “And I’m going to stop them,” he said.

“Bullying is not cool,” said Ziggy, waving his arms like he was dancing.

“We have to tell someone about this,” said Tara. “Arjun was hurt.”

During the incident, Arjun cut his head. When the bullies saw the blood (血), they ran away quickly. Arjun called for help and a teacher came and took him straight to the hospital. But Arjun didn’t tell the teacher about the bullies. When the head teacher asked him what happened, he just said, “I fell and cut my head.”

Do you feel sleepy on rainy days? If the answer is yes, you are not alone. Many people feel the same way. But do you know why?

One of the reasons is that there is little sunshine on rainy days. Our brain (大脑) will have less serotonin (血清素)and more melatonin (褪黑素) if there is not enough sunlight. Serotonin helps us feel good and energetic, while melatonin makes us feel sleepy. As a result, we may want to go to sleep and even feel a bit sad when it is rainy.

The humidity (湿度) of a rainy day is another reason. As it rains, the air becomes wetter than usual. It’s more difficult for our sweat (汗水) to dry in weather like this, so our body has to work harder to stay cool. This can make us feel tired.

Moreover, the sound of rain, a type of pink noise, will make us feel sleepy too. Like white noise, pink noise includes all the sound frequencies (频率) humans can hear, but it has fewer high frequencies than white noise. This makes pink noise sound softer. Studies show that people’s brain waves (脑电波) will become fewer when they hear pink noise, so they will fall asleep more easily.

Now you can understand why you are sleepy on rainy days. Then what can you do if you don’t like that feeling? Well, you can get as much natural light as possible and keep yourself busy. Also, you can use a machine to make your room dry. In this way, you won’t feel sleepy any more.

42.How does the writer start the passage?

A.By asking a question.                        B.By telling a story.

C.By using a picture.                            D.By giving a weather report.

43.What does the underlined word “energetic” probably mean?

A.cold                 B.active                     C.tired                       D.unhappy

44.From the fourth paragraph, we can learn________.

A.white noise includes fewer high frequencies than pink noise

B.people will have more brain waves when they hear pink noise

C.the softer the noise sounds, the more easily people will feel sleepy

D.it’s difficult for people to fall asleep when they hear pink noise

45.What is the passage mainly about?

A.Some facts about different kinds of noises.

B.The reasons why people need enough sleep.

C.The reasons why people are sleepy in rainy weather.

D.Some ways to help people sleep better on rainy days.

3. D
