This year, many kids’ movies have come out. With so many great ones to choose from, we’ve picked three of them for you. Let’s take a look together!

Orion and the Dark

Release Date: Feb 2, 2024

Orion has a great many fears—but he’s especially afraid of the dark. So you can imagine his surprise when an embodiment (化身) of the dark shows up to take him on an adventure to show him there’s nothing to be afraid of. The Netflix movie is based on a book by Emma Yarlett, but the script (剧本) was written by someone who knows a thing or two about writing movies about anxieties (焦虑): Charlie Kaufman, the writer behind Being John Malkovich.

Robot Dreams

Release Date: May 31, 2024

This film, based on the comic by Sara Varon, received an Oscar nomination (提名) for Best Animated Feature. (It lost to The Boy and the Heron.) It’s about an anthropomorphic (拟人化的) dog who, to help with feeling lonely, orders a robot to be his friend. The lack (缺少) of words and overall sadness give the impression that it’s not exactly aimed at (以……为目标) kids, but the older ones might get into it.

Mufasa: The Lion King

Release Date: Dec 20, 2024

Barry Jenkins, the Oscar-nominated director of Moonlight, directs a prequel (前传) to The Lion King about Mufasa (voiced by Aaron Pierre) and his relationship with Scar (Kelvin Harrison, Jr). Don’t expect 2D animation similar to the original, though: This one will be done in a realistic-looking CGI (电脑成像技术) style, similar to the 2019 remake of The Lion King, and Seth Rogen and Billy Eichner even reprise (重新出演) their roles as Timon and Pumbaa.

25.Which movie won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature this year?

A.Orion and the Dark                          B.Robot Dreams

C.The Boy and the Heron                     D.Mufasa: The Lion King

26.What is the main theme of Robot Dreams?

A.A dog’s adventures.                           B.Dealing with loneliness.

C.The importance of words.                  D.Friendship between humans and robots.

27.What story does Mufasa: The Lion King feature?

A.A story about Mufasa in the afterlife.  B.A story about Timon and Pumbaa.

C.A story about a new lion king.            D.A story between Mufasa and Scar.

Gordon Williams’s hobby may seem strange to people when they meet it for the first time. But it is a traditional craft (手艺). He builds model ships inside old bottles.

Gordon has always loved ships, especially sailing ships from the old days. His interest in this hobby began many years ago when he visited a museum in Ottawa, Canada, where there was a show of model ships in bottles. Gordon thought the show was wonderful. But he wondered how the craftsman got the ship through the thin neck of the bottle. Gordon decided to find it out.

He found an old master craftsman who was willing to teach him the necessary skills. First, Gordon takes an old bottle. Then he puts in a layer of putty (一层油灰), carefully shaped and painted, to make it look like the sea. Next, he builds the ship. To get the ship through the neck of the bottle, Gordon holds down the masts (桅杆). Once the ship is inside the bottle, he takes a long, thin tool to raise the masts.

Gordon has completed well over one hundred models. His wish is to build bigger model ships, such as aircraft carriers. This will be more challenging (挑战的), as he will have to build the ship actually inside the bottle. His hobby certainly needs time, patience and a steady hand.

31.What do people think of Gordon’s hobby when people first meet it?

A.Traditional.    B.Useful.                C.Unusual.              D.Interesting.

32.Which of the following pictures shows the last step of Gordon’s work?

33.Gordon’s new plan is more challenging because he will ________.

A.make aircraft inside the bottle               B.build more than one hundred ships

C.put a bigger model ship inside the bottle D.build bigger model ships inside the bottle

Does life sometimes seem to be full of problems? How many times do you find yourself saying things like “I really don’t understand this maths problem,” or “I can’t get into the school team”? Well, maybe it’s time to introduce yourself to to an amazing word yet (还、仍).

With this word, you can change everything. “I really don’t understand this maths problem yet.”, “I can’t get into the school team yet.” Suddenly, the impossible becomes possible.

I once read about a school. After finding the old Pass/Fail system wasn’t helping students grow, the school tried a new way to mark students’ tests. Now students don’t see a big red F for Fail on their test paper if they don’t pass it. They see a “Not yet”. In this way, students feel that they are on a journey to become a better self. The test is not the end.

This kind of thinking is part of what we call “a growth mindset (成长思维)”. People with a growth mindset don’t keep their eyes on what they can’t do. They aren’t worried by not getting things right the first time and are happy to keep trying till they do. They are not afraid of trouble and believe they can change for the better.

While other people have “a fixed mindset (固定思维)”. These people often keep their eyes on what they fail to do. They are always worried about not getting things right the first time and are ready to give up when things seem to go wrong. They don’t think they are able to change.

But don’t worry if you think that you have a fixed mindset. You can learn to have a growth mindset. Remember that it all starts with questioning the things you believe about yourself. Stop believing that you can’t. Believe that you just can’t yet. Once you start doing this, you’ll find how powerful the small word is.

34.How does the writer lead to the topic? _______

A.By telling stories.

B.By giving facts.

C.By asking questions.

D.By showing results.

35.What can we learn from the passage? _______

A.Students can have a growth mindset by practising questioning.

B.People with a growth mindset may say “It isn’t good enough.”

C.Students feel they become a better self when going on a journey.

D.People with a fixed mindset may say “Mistakes help me learn better.”

36.The following sentence should be put in ______.

“Clear, it is better to have a growth mindset than a fixed mindset.”

A.①            B.②                       C.③              D.④

37.The writer writes this passage to _______.

A.advise thinking in a hopeful way

B.advise changing others’ mindsets

C.introduce how to use the word “yet”

D.introduce what different mindsets are like

1. A

used to过去常常;has to不得不;had better最好;are used to被用于。根据“but now some people keep them as pets”可知,与现在相对比的是过去,因此用used to,故选A。

2. C
