When Wang Haiyan was young, her favorite toys weren’t Barbie dolls. Instead, she started learning to make shadow puppets(皮影) from her father at 13. Now 43, Wang has spent 30 years practicing and spreading the art.
Shadow puppetry is a form of theater that uses puppets made from leather(皮) or paper, accompanied(伴奏) by music and singing. It was invented during the Western Han Dynasty (206 BC—AD 24). It tells us about folk tales and historical stories, passing down culture and customs over thousands of years.
Shadow puppetry is all about creating the puppets and performing with them. Wang’s hometown of Hua county, Shanxi, is known as the birthplace of the folk art.
Puppet—makers must follow 24 steps to make the puppets including washing the leather, carving(雕刻) and painting, according to Wang. Carving is the most difficult part.
“We have a special carving skill—moving the leather under the knife,” Wang said. It took Wang three years to master this skill. She used a brick(砖块) to strengthen her left hand while practicing. It takes about 3,000 carves to make a shadow puppet. “The complex (复杂的) steps make it hard to hand down the folk art,” she said.
But Wang has found a way to do so. In recent years, she has made shadow puppets based on some cartoon series and given a live streaming performance. She used colors like blue and purple that were hardly seen in shadow puppetry and added more sticks to the puppets to make the performance more lively. “I hope more and more young people enjoy shadow puppetry and pass it down,” she said,

One of the oldest arts which dates back to the Han Dynasty has been disappearing from the stage. Different from films, the shadow play* needs more attention. In the past years, Chinese artists have been trying to help it survive. Their effort has got encouragement and support from the government. In 2011, the shadow puppet* play was added to UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage list.
Most of the puppets were made of leathers from animals, like donkeys and sheep. The leathers must be carefully chosen, and then people make them smooth. When the leathers become smooth enough, the artists would paint the characters on it, and then cut them out with different tools. The body parts of the puppets are separately cut out and joined together, so that they could have 24 movable joints*. Puppet players hold them with sticks connected to their most important joints during the performance.
The experienced players could act five sticks on one puppet with only one hand. Most of them show interest in puppet performances, so they can play several traditional instruments. They are also needed to sing local operas, and have a good sense of music.
Xue Hongquan has found ways to protect it from disappearing. He improved the traditional performance and introduced modern music, light as well as performing skills. Xue’s puppets could not only perform old plays, but could imitate* modern dances. “The art could be passed onto only by making more people love it and accept it,” said Xue. “So it is our duty to do something for our traditional art.”

Nail art is a skill to be learnt. It requires patience, time and hard work. Nail art has also become an international phenomenon(现象)and many are using their fingernails to show creativity and personality.
Instagram, Facebook and Pinterest are overflowing(充满)with people showing off their latest and curiously beautiful designs. The important question is where it all began and how the colour of your fingernails has become just as if not more important than the outfit you are wearing?
As a matter of fact, nail polish(指甲油)and nail art have a long history, dating back to 3000 BC in China, India and Egypt. Plants were processed to create a dye that was used as a type of nail paint, which stood for social class and wealth: deep colours such as red were worn by the rich and lighter paler colours were used by the poor. People in the Inca civilization painted animals on their nails, showing which tribe(部落)they belonged to!
It wasn’t until the early 19th century that nail paint became what we see and know of today. The modern technology introduced more paints and colours which were soon used on nails to choose from. Besides various colors, new colour materials have got developed, leading to the nail polish industry’s success.
Nowadays, nail art is a part of the fashion world. Rock, punk and goth groups wore black nail polish and the colour of your nails communicated the culture you belonged to. Today, you can even complete any look, which can make you cheerful and delightful. If necessary, you can surf the Internet where you can get plenty of inspiration and get a professional(专业的)finish in a short while with the help of the latest introduction. Everything is entirely up to you. And whatever colour and pattern you choose, make sure it suits you best.
