Last year in early summer, I was walking up the hill to my house when I saw two birds, each about 60 centimetres tall, standing on the path. They didn’t seem to notice me until I was right in front of them and then they at once moved quickly into the bushes.

I was quite excited by the idea of two birds making a nest in my front yard, although I didn’t really expect them to because wild birds don’t usually make a nest so close. A few weeks later, the birds appeared again. I found them crouching beside a tree off to the side of the path. As I moved nearer to them, I imagined that they would run away like they did last time. But instead they stuck out their heads and made a threatening (威胁的) croaking sound. It seemed to warn me not to go any nearer.

I didn’t know why they were croaking at me until a short time later I made an amazing discovery: they had two small baby birds.

As I moved quietly towards the birds, careful not to make any sudden movements, they started their croaking again. They straightened their necks forward so they seemed longer and more threatening. The mother carefully crouched down over the chicks, and hid her babies well in her feathers.

I was watching them with respect when I suddenly tripped and fell to the ground. The birds took this as a threat and the father raced towards me, spreading his wings to protect the mother and the chicks while making himself appear larger.

I was sorry to have surprised them and left quickly. I was amazed by their fearless actions.

Their parental natural ability made them so brave. It is hard not to respect nature.

54. Why did the two birds not run away like they did last time?

A. Because they were not afraid of me any more.

B. Because they needed to protect their baby birds.

C. Because it seemed that I wasn’t noticed this time.

D. Because I was careful enough not to frighten them.

55. What are Paragraphs 4 and 5 mainly about?

A. I tripped and fell to the ground.

B. The birds seemed to be more threatening.

C. I watched the birds and their babies carefully.

D. The two birds tried their best to protect their babies.

56. Which of the following is TRUE according to the passage?

A. Wild birds often made a nest near my house.

B. Only the mother bird tried to protect the baby birds.

C. Not only the birds but also I had a heart full of love.

D. I knew why the birds croaked at me in the beginning.

57. In which way is this passage organized?

A. Time order.              B. Space order.             C. General to specific.   D. Specific to general.

Luckin Coffee has worked with Kweichow Moutai, the maker of China’s national liquor baijiu, for an unusual offering: alcoholic lattes (拿铁).

The popular Chinese coffee shop rolled out the so-called “sauce-flavored latte” with a bit of liquor for 38 yuan ($5.20) on Monday, 4th September, 2023. People who order with an online coupon will be able to receive 50% off for a limited time, it said.

For its new connection with Luckin, each cup has just a bit of liquor, with an overall alcohol content (酒精含量) of about 0.5%, according to Luckin. The company suggests, though, that drivers, teenagers and pregnant women should not drink the latte.

In Beijing, the Moutai-flavored latte sold out in some Luckin Coffee shops before midday. And many shops had to close their online ordering as orders greatly increased.

With the growing popularity of this drink, people begin to have such a question in their mind:? Quite a large number of people have been sharing their experience after trying the latte online, with most agreeing that the taste of the baijiu is very strong. Some people said they even felt dizzy (眩晕的) after drinking the coffee because of its alcohol content. Workers in Legal Affairs Division of Beijing Municipal Traffic Management Bureau (北京市交管法制科) say that people drinking any kind of alcoholic drink mustn’t drive. If the blood alcohol content is over 20mg/100ml, it is thought of as drinking and driving. Since the alcohol content in “sauce-flavored latte” is only 0.5%, whether the alcohol content in the blood goes beyond the safe value remains to be explored.

58. What does the underlined words “roll out” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?

A. sell out the product                                              B. make the new product come out

C. give away the product                                           D. increase the sales of the product

59. Which can be put back in thein the last passage?

60. What can you infer (推断) from the last paragraph?

A. Luckin Coffee is becoming more and more popular.

C. People drinking Luckin Coffee feel dizzy and mustn’t drive.

D. Researchers will further explore the blood alcohol content in the latte.

Captain Nemo took me to the dining room. We sat at a table in the middle of the room and ate a delicious lunch. He told me that all the food came from the sea. “I love the sea,” he said. “It gives me everything that I need. Even my clothes come from the sea. It is a place of perfect peace. There are no governments, no taxes, and no wars. Here, I am truly free! I will never return to the land.” He took me to see the library which had thousands of books in many languages. Then he showed me the art gallery. It had many paintings by famous artists. The next room was a museum with all kinds of treasures from the sea. I had never seen such a good museum.

Captain Nemo was very proud of his collection and very proud of the Nautilus. He told me that he had discovered a way to make electricity using salt and mercury. This electricity gave the Nautilus all the power it needed to move through the water. Huge pumps filled and emptied tanks of air and water to make the Nautilus sink or rise.

After we got to the engine room, Captain Nemo showed me the engine and explained how it worked. The Nautilus was seventy meters long and eight meters wide. It had a cylindrical shape with points on each end and weighed 1,500 tons. “It’s a wonderful ship!” I exclaimed. “I love it as if it were my child,” he replied.

“How did you build it in secret?” I asked. “All the parts were made in different countries. I used different names each time I placed an order. I took all the parts to a desert island, and my workmen put them together. Then, we burned our workshops.” “It must have cost a fortune!” I exclaimed.

“Millions of dollars,” he replied. “However, I have billions!”

The oil paper umbrella is a traditional Chinese handcraft (手工艺品). It has a history of over 1,000 years in China. In early Tang Dynasty, it was introduced to Japan and Korea, so it was called the “Tang Umbrella”. Later oil paper umbrellas were introduced to other Asian countries, such as Vietnam, Thailand and Laos, and each had its own style. However, as steel-ribbed umbrellas appeared in the last century, the hand-made oil paper umbrellas became less used in daily life.

Yuhang in Hangzhou is known for making oil paper umbrellas for more than 230 years. They are mainly made of skin paper, bamboo and Tung oil. They need to take more than 70 steps to make, including making bamboo ribs, pesting paper and painting patterns (图案). It takes at least a week to make such an umbrella. In 2008, these umbrellas were added to Intangible Cultural Heritage List of China.

A young man called Liu Weixue learned the traditional art of making Yuhang oil paper umbrellas from his grandfather. “I want to bring the art to life,” Liu said. He improved the umbrellas to win the hearts of young people. As the traditional paper was easy to break, he started to use a kind of thicker paper. In a test, his umbrellas were opened and closed for 1,000 times without breaking. He used a kind of lighter bamboo to make the umbrellas weigh less.

Now Liu hopes the art can be passed on. He goes to local schools to teach students. He also goes to events in different places to introduce the art.
