Years ago, I was travelling around Australia with two friends. At that time, both friends had to leave early because of work, so I decided to travel to the Whitsunday Islands alone.
I got on a boat. Everyone on the boat, except me, was with friends. Not wanting to talk to strangers, I decided to take photos. The back of the boat was a good place to catch the wonderful view of the sea.
I walked there and saw a metal box standing there. I put my arms on it, without knowing it was a hot barbecue(烧烤架)!
“My God, it hurts!” crying in pain, I moved my arms away at once.
Although there weren’t marks on my arms, I was in great pain. And I didn’t even have friends with me. I sat alone, trying not to cry. Finally my arms turned purple.
People on the boat saw this and came to help me. One girl offered me a special scald cream(烫伤膏).
After treatment, I felt much better. I could enjoy the beauty of the Whitsundays, talk to strangers on the boat and have fun with them.
It’s not the conventional(传统的) way to meet people, but it shows even burning your arms can become part of your trip, and make your trip better in the end.

Luckin Coffee has worked with Kweichow Moutai, the maker of China’s national liquor baijiu, for an unusual offering: alcoholic lattes (拿铁).
The popular Chinese coffee shop rolled out the so-called “sauce-flavored latte” with a bit of liquor for 38 yuan ($5.20) on Monday, 4th September, 2023. People who order with an online coupon will be able to receive 50% off for a limited time, it said.
For its new connection with Luckin, each cup has just a bit of liquor, with an overall alcohol content (酒精含量) of about 0.5%, according to Luckin. The company suggests, though, that drivers, teenagers and pregnant women should not drink the latte.
In Beijing, the Moutai-flavored latte sold out in some Luckin Coffee shops before midday. And many shops had to close their online ordering as orders greatly increased.
With the growing popularity of this drink, people begin to have such a question in their mind: ▲ ? Quite a large number of people have been sharing their experience after trying the latte online, with most agreeing that the taste of the baijiu is very strong. Some people said they even felt dizzy (眩晕的) after drinking the coffee because of its alcohol content. Workers in Legal Affairs Division of Beijing Municipal Traffic Management Bureau (北京市交管法制科) say that people drinking any kind of alcoholic drink mustn’t drive. If the blood alcohol content is over 20mg/100ml, it is thought of as drinking and driving. Social media(社交媒体) has its positive aspects, but it can also bring some problems.
Have you ever been bored and decided to check your We Chat moments, only to find out that your best friend is at the Great Wall or one of your classmates is eating delicious noodles at your favorite restaurant, or one of your basketball teammates is visiting the giant pandas in Sichuan? Have you had the feeling that others are enjoying life more than you are? If your answers are both “Yes”, you are experiencing FOMO—the fear of missing out.
Researchers have found that over 75%of young people are experiencing FOMO from time to time. Social media is the main culprit for it. Because it is so easy today for people to see what their friends are doing, eating, buying and talking about. And they are afraid of missing out on important and new information when they are away from social networks. However, it is impossible for us to enjoy the same activities others are enjoying on social media. Failing to realize this truth, we often let FOMO lead us to compare our lives with those of others. This comparison leaves us feeling dissatisfied. However, our lives have both good and bad moments, but all we see on social media are the picture-perfect moments others share. FOMO also makes us check social media more often, which can cause feelings of sadness, loneliness and boredom.
So what should we do if we have FOMO? Researchers advised that we face it and change our way of thinking. They also explained that taking part in social activities could help us realize that nothing bad was happening. What’s more, they suggested finding the joy in the present and not believing the unreal information or news on the Internet. “Take it as a chance to do what you really love, and turn your FOMO into your JOMO—joy of missing out,” one researcher said.
36.What is the main purpose of Paragraph 2?
A.To show what FOMO is with examples.
B.To find out if people suffer from FOMO.
C.To ask questions about people’s daily lives.
D.To give examples about people’s using social media.
37.Which one can replace the word “culprit” in Paragraph 3?
A.purpose B.cause C.result D.problem
38.According to paragraph 3, why does social media make people feel dissatisfied?
A.Because our lives have both good and bad moments.
B.Because it leads us to compare our lives with those of others.
C.Because it is impossible for us to make friends by social media.
D.Because we can see the picture-prefect moments.
39.According to the last paragraph, what are the right ways to deal with FOMO?
①Join a voluntary group.
②Accept what you are having now.
③Check your friends’ We Chat moments from time to time.
④Develop your hobbies.
⑤Stop believing the news on the Internet.
A.③④⑤ B.②③⑤ C.①④⑤ D.①②④
40.What can be the best title of this passage?

The late president of South Africa, Nelson Mandela. once said, “If you talk to a man in a language he understands, that goes to his head. If you talk to a man in his own language, that goes to his heart.”
Mandela understood that our mother language is a very intimate (亲近的) thing to us. For people who speak an ancient tongue as their mother language, it helps them keep their traditions. Their language is their main connection with their ancestors. And it is also how they imagine the future.
So it’s a serious thing that a language disappears. Over the last century, more than 400 languages have died out. Some languages are now spoken only by a few dozen people, like Yagan in Chile. Africa and South Africa are also places where many languages are dying.
Why are we humans speaking fewer languages than we once did? The answer has to do with globalization. With greater trade and communication, the planet has become smaller. It’s become more useful to speak some languages—English is the obvious example—than others. The effect has been to kill certain languages, usually ones spoken by less populous and powerful peoples.
But there are people and organizations all over the world that aren’t prepared to accept a planet with fewer and fewer languages. Through efforts both large and small, they are getting people to speak and read in certain languages, and to pass them on. Each year on Feb 21,The United Nations also holds International Mother Language Day in the hope that the public pay more attention to dying languages.
This work is important. As US writer Rita Mae Brown wrote, “Language is the road map of a culture. It tells where its people come from and where they are going”.

【详解】句意:吉姆和他的表弟都没有去过美国,但他们都很了解这个国家……。
考查并列连词和不定代词辨析。Not only...but also不仅……而且……;Neither...nor既不……也不……;Both...and两者都……;Either...or要么……要么……。根据“... Jim ... his cousin has been to America”和“but”可推知,吉姆和他的表弟都没有去过美国,用Neither...nor。all(三种及以上)全部;both两者;neither(两者)都不;none(三者及以上)没有一个。根据“Jim ... his cousin”和“of them know the country well”可知,此处指两者,且句子为肯定句,故不定代词用both。故选B。
