On 20th June 1702, I set off for Surat, on a ship called the Adventure. And indeed “adventure” was really an appropriate name for that ship, and for everything that happened on that journey.

The first part of our trip went well. But when we sailed through the Indian Ocean, there were some terrible storms. The winds were so strong that they sent our ship completely off course. We didn’t know where we were.

At last, when the storms stopped, we saw an island. We had no more drinking water, so the captain sent me to find some fresh water on the island. I set off with some other men in a small boat. And when we got there, I travelled around the island by myself while the men looked for water.

That was a big mistake. When I went back, there were no men and no boat! Then I saw them rowing desperately back to our ship with an enormous giant following them in the sea! They were very frightened.

I ran as fast as I could in the opposition direction. I then climbed up a big hill and when I looked around, I saw fields and fields of very long grass. Then I saw other giants working in the fields.

“On my last trip, I was a giant on an island of tiny people and now I am a tiny person on an island of giants!” It was not a nice feeling.

I was sad and hid behind an enormous tree. I had to think of a plan, but at that time one of the giants saw me.

—Taken from Gulliver’s Travels

A.Why was the ship completely off course?

B.When did Gulliver and some other men find the water?

C.What did Gulliver think of the name of the ship “Adventure”?

A smile shows that a person is happy. For example, a person may smile when he is pleased with a grade on a test. Or a person might smile if a friend tells a funny joke. People smile for many different reasons. But smiles are more than just a way for people to show that they are happy. There are other good reasons to smile often.

First, it is easier to smile than to show unhappiness. In fact, it only takes 17 muscles (肌肉) to smile. But it takes 43 muscles to show unhappiness. So give the muscles in your face a rest and smile!

Second, smiles are nice. People may try to look nice on the outside by wearing nice clothes.

However, there is a famous saying: ______. That is because it is easy to be around someone who is smiling and happy. Almost no one wants to be around someone who is unhappy all the time.

Third, smiles are helpful. Both smiling and laughing can quickly spread from one person to another. If one person smiles, people around him want to smile, too. Similarly, when a person laughs, people tend (倾向) to laugh with him. If a person is sad, the best thing to do is to share a smile or laugh. It is the easiest and cheapest way to cheer someone up. Usually nobody would like to turn down the invitation which is offered by a person with a smile.

Finally, smiling and laughing are very good for the body. Even if you are mad or sad, try smiling. You’ll find that it will be hard to stay mad or sad for very long.

37.Which of the following sentences can be put in the ________ in Paragraph 3?

B.It is very good for people’s bodies to smile and laugh.

C.Everyone wants to be around someone who is unhappy.

D.If someone smiles, people around him don’t want to smile.

40.What can be the best title for this text?

A.The power of smiling.                             B.The importance of happiness.

C.Different ways of smiling.                        D.Ways of making people happy.

D

“Without music, life would be a mistake,” famous German philosopher (哲学家) Friend Rich Nietzsche said over a century ago. Music is a big part of lives.     41    . For example, Chicago public schools hurt arts education when it fired (解雇) over 100 art and music teachers, according to The Washington Times    42    . In other countries, such as China and the UK, music classes are not thought to be as important as ones like science, math and history.     43    . And it isn’t tested. Many students are busy with schoolwork, so parents and students choose to pay more attention to improving subjects that are tested more often.

44    . When playing music, you need different abilities to work together. It is not as simple as it looks. For example, when playing the piano, people see music notes and decode (解码) them in their brains. They also use their fingers to make sounds. You need to deal with all these things at the same time.

45    . You can see that many scientists are good at playing music—Einstein played the violin, and German physicist Max Planck was talented in playing the piano.

How many times have your parents told you that you must eat your green vegetables? We all know that green vegetables are healthy, but what about other foods of different colors? You don’t need to like all food, but it is good to have different colors in your diet, for example, red food such as strawberries and tomatoes, yellow food such as bananas and pears, and orange food such as carrots and oranges. But what about the blue food?

A few years ago, a food company added the color blue to its bags of sweets. Children like the color blue, so were the blue sweets popular? The food company was surprised to find that they were very unpopular. Children still liked the sweets that have the usual colors of red, green, brown, yellow and orange better.

How many blue meats or vegetables do you know? None? There are few natural blue foods—it isn’t a common natural food color. Some scientists say that as a result, our brain doesn’t treat blue food as something healthy. This is why we don’t usually use blue food coloring for drinks, cakes and other food.

Some people say we eat with our eyes. The idea is that we need to like the looks of the food before we try it. I wanted to test this idea and so I asked some friends to have a very unusual lunch. My husband and I made some eggs on toast and put blue coloring in them. The result is that nobody ate them. My guests refused to put the blue eggs in their mouths!

So will we ever see blue food on our plates? The answer seems to be “no”, at least in countries like the UK and the USA.

根据“Is Tom’s father…ORBIS doctor or…UNICEF officer?”

2.A

enough...to...足够……而做某事;too...to... 根据“I joined in the dancing”和“do something I’m not good at”可知,做不擅长的事是足够勇敢的。故选A。
