Dear Mum,

Because of COVID-19, you and Dad have to work from home, help me with my online classes and do the housework.  ▲ . I know something I can do to help give you both a break. I can do the housework and you can pay me! Every day, I will sweep the floor, set the table and walk the dog—each for $1. This plan can let you and Dad relax. It will help me too. I will organize my time better and learn to manage my money.

So what do you think? I’m ready to start right now!

Love,

Gabby

Dear Gabby,

In fact, you will get a reward for doing the housework-smiles from both your dad and me.

Love,

Mum

During work hours, among the sounds of machines, the kitchen of Bach’s Bakery (面包房) is especially tidy and quiet, not because of any rules against talking during work hours, but because all of the workers have a hearing disability. They are hard-working and professional in their work, and use sigh language to communicate with each other from time to time.

Bach’s Bakery lies in Changsha City, Hunan Province. It is run by a German couple, Uwe Brutzer and his wife Dorothee Brutzer, who started it up ten years ago with the purpose of providing more jobs for those disabled in the neighborhood. So far, Bach’s Bakery has trained around 30 hearing-disabled people. While some skilled workers found jobs in other bakeries and hotels and have been able to live on their own, several of them have stayed to work at the bakery after they completed the training.

The Brutzers’ work has won the support of many people in China. With the spread of news about the bakery, many Internet users learned about Bach’s Bakery and its inspiring (鼓舞人心的) story. As a result, many local people in Changsha as well as visitors from other parts of the country come to buy their products. Uwe said that public attention has encouraged (鼓励) them a lot and helped grow the bakery’s business, resulting in workers getting higher pay. However, what he values (珍惜) more is that, through media (媒体) reports, more people have come to understand that disabled people can work as well as other people when they are given chances.

Now, as they are preparing to return to Germany, they have found a German couple teaching in China as the new managers, and handed over the bakery to a public welfare (福利) organization. Their wish is to continue providing free training for the hearing-disabled and that the bakery will never be changed into a shop with moneymaking as its main goal.

A.machines make too much noise

B.their boss doesn’t allow them to talk

C.they can’t communicate in spoken words

D.heavy work keeps them too busy to speak

15.What can be inferred from Paragraph 2?

A.Bach’s Bakery has more than 30 workers now.

B.Bach’s Bakery helps its workers live independently.

C.Bach’s Bakery also offers jobs to people outside Hunan.

D.Bach’s Bakery requires its workers not to leave after training.

16.In Uwe’s opinion, the greatest value of public attention is that ______.

A.disabled workers are paid more             B.his shop becomes more popular

C.the disabled are better understood          D.sales of their products get stronger

17.What’s the best title for the passage?

A.A Silent Bakery                                   B.A Special Wish

C.The Success of the Disabled                  D.The Rules of Bach’s Bakery

Xia Boyu, born in 1949, is the first Chinese disabled (残疾的) player to climb Mount Qomolangma. In 1974, he was chosen by the Chinese mountaineering team. His first try was in 1975 as a part of a group of 20 Chinese climbers. After two months of training, he started climbing Mount Qomolangma, but they met a snowstorm and had to go back. On the way, he gave his sleeping bag to his teammate. His feet were frozen and had to be cut off.

Fitting man-made limbs (假肢) on both legs couldn’t stop Xia Boyu from challenging Mount Qomolangma. From 2014 to 2016, Xia Boyu has tried his best to top Mount Qomolangma three times. Even though one time he was only 94 metres away from the top, snowstorms still stopped the old man again and again. He finally chose to give up.

In 2018, Xia Boyu, at an age when most people are taking life easy, challenged Mount Qomolangma for the fifth time. And finally he reached the top successfully. For Xia Boyu, the most important thing in the world is never to give up. His journey still continues. He is planning to climb other mountains in the world and explore (探索) the South and North Poles.

18.When did Xia Boyu start climbing Mount Qomolangma?

A.When he was 25 years old.                   B.When he was 26 years old.

C.When he was 69 years old.                   D.After he fitted the man-made limbs.

19.Why were his feet cut off?

A.Because he fell down from the top.       B.Because his feet were hit by a stone.

C.Because his feet were frozen terribly.     D.Because his feet hurt when training.

20.How many times did Xia Boyu climb the Mount Qomolangma?

A.Twice.             B.Three times.           C.Four times.             D.Five times.

21.What can we learn from Xia Boyu?

A.It is never too old to learn.                   B.No living man all things can.

C.The first step is as good as half over.      D.Never giving up is the key to our dream.

D

On the first night in their new home, Mother said, “You’ve often wanted an adventure (历险), haven’t you? Now it has come. I told Mrs. Viney to leave us supper. I guess she’s put it in the other room. Let’s go and see.”

They looked in the other room, but found no supper.

“We can’t have any supper today,” said Phyllis, the youngest daughter, unhappily.

“Yes, we can,” said Mother. “We can unpack one of the boxes. There’s some food from the old house in London.”

It was a strange supper—tomatoes, potato chips, dried fruit and cake. After supper, they put sheets (床单) and blankets on the beds and then went to sleep.

The next morning, the children got up early. They looked outside and saw the country house stood in a field near the top of a hill.

“This place is much prettier than our old house in London,” said Phyllis. The other children all agreed.

All day, they helped Mother tidy up the rooms. Then in the late afternoon, Mother said, “That’s enough for today. You can walk around for an hour before supper.”

“Where shall we go?” said Bobbie.

“To the railway, of course!” cried Peter, now the only man in the family.

The railway line was at the foot of the hill, by a wooden fence (篱笆). They climbed onto the top of the fence. Suddenly, they heard a noise. The next moment, the railway line began to shake and a train came screaming out of the tunnel (隧道).

“Oh!” said Bobbie, “It was like a great wild animal going by!”

“I wonder if it is going to London,” said Bobbie. “I’m sure Father is there. I miss him very much.”

“Let’s go down to the station and find out,” said Peter.

They walked along the edge of the railway line to the station and then up to the platform (站台). They saw the Station Master was half asleep behind a newspaper.

There were a great many railway lines at the station. On one side of the big station yard was a large pile of coal. There was a white line on the wall behind, near the top of the pile.

“What does the white line stand for?” Bobbie asked.

“It’s to show how much coal there is,” said the Station Master, who was standing behind them with a friendly smile. “Then we can know if anybody steals (偷) some. ”

The following three days were all wet, and it was very cold in their new house.

“Can we make a fire?” asked Bobbie.

“We can’t make a fire in June,” said Mother.

After tea, Peter told his sisters, “I have an idea, I’ll tell you about it later.”

And two nights later, Peter said to his sisters, “Come and help me.”

On the hill, just above the station, there were some big stones in the grass. Between the stones, the girls saw a small pile of coal.

“Help me carry it up to our house.” said Peter.

After three journeys up the hill, the coal was added to the pile by the back door.

Another week later, Mrs. Viney looked at the pile of coal and said, “There’s more coal here than I thought.”

The children laughed silently and said nothing.

Trees are one of the oldest citizens (公民) of our earth. Just like us, trees change a lot when they grow. At one to three years old, young trees learn how to protect themselves.    26    Most young trees have large, deep green leaves so that they can catch enough sunlight and change it into their food and energy.    27

29    At this time, they still have their important place in nature. In many ways, the life of trees is like our own life experience.    30

A.The trees reach their largest sizes.
