Tebelis couldn’t eat that night. As he fell asleep, he thought of the impossible task before him.

That night, Tebelis had some strange dreams. Suddenly, Tebelis opened his eyes. This was it, the answer to his impossible task!

“I can use water to mill the grain (磨谷物),” he said to himself. “I can make a...a watermill!”

The laziest boy in Greece worked through the night for his plan.

The next morning, Tebelis described his idea in detail to his father. At first, Agathon didn’t believe that water could turn a heavy wheel.

“Our cow is old and sick. We could never finishing milling all that grain in a week by ourselves,” Tebelis said. “I’m sure my idea will work. The stream behind our house is the perfect place to build my watermill.”

Agathon felt that the boy wouldn’t give up easily this time and agreed.

Later that morning, Tebelis cut down a small tree and cut the wood into boards of different sizes. He worked day and night. A few days later, the work was finally done. They watched and waited...

Then slowly, ever so slowly, the millstone began to turn. It turned faster, faster, faster. It was working!

In just a few days, they managed to mill each and every basket of Alexander’s grain. It was the time that Alexander’s soldiers returned to collect their flour (面粉). The lead soldier studied the machine for a long time. Then they collected their baskets and went away.

The next day, Tebelis heard voices, and, looking up, he found himself face to face with King Alexander once more.

“I have heard of this ‘watermill’ that you have built,” Alexander said. “Show me.”

The king examined the machine and then said, “They call you Tebelis, but that name no longer fits. I have a new name for you: Nestor, ‘the wise one.’”

He liked his new name, and he liked his new life.

Months passed. “I have an idea for another machine,” he told his father one sunny afternoon.

That evening Holmes again wore different clothes, and a large, black hat. He changed his face, his hair—everything. He was a different man.

We walked together to Serpentine Avenue. “You see,” said Holmes to me, “I don’t think she wants others to see the photo. But where is it? At her bank? No. Such a woman likes to keep important things herself. I’m sure it’s in her house.”

“But how will you know?” I asked. He said, “She’ll show me. She’ll have to.” Just then Irene’s taxi arrived. One of the men in the street ran to open the door and then another man pushed him. Other men were also pushing and shouting, and a fight began. Irene was in the middle of it, but Holmes ran to help her. Then suddenly he fell to the ground, with blood running down his face. Irene hurried to her front door, but she looked back. “How kind of him to help me! Is the poor man hurt?” she called.

Some people carried Holmes into the house. I waited outside the window and watched. Then Holmes put up his hand, and I threw the smoke-stick into the room. At once, the people in the street and in the house all began to shout “Fire!” very loudly.

The house was full of smoke. I walked away, and ten minutes later Holmes came to meet me.

“Well done, Watson,” he said. “Have you got the photo?” I asked.

“I know where it is. She showed me,” he answered.

“But why did she show you?”

“It’s easy,” he said, and laughed. “You saw all those people in the street? I paid them to help us. It wasn’t a real fight and the blood wasn’t real. When people shout “Fire!”, a woman runs to the most important thing in her house, her baby, her gold, or a photo. Irene ran to find her photo which is in a cupboard in the living room. I saw it. But I did not take it. Tomorrow we will go to the palace and tell it to the King first. The King himself can take the photo from the cupboard. And then we will go.”

Last year on Mother’s Day,  someone from our community invited people to share stories about their mothers.

A policeman said his mother took him the opera in St. Louis on Saturdays. He listened to dialects (方言) he didn’t understand. He grew to love opera. Now every Saturday he listens to a radio station that plays opera in the afternoons, enjoying Italian voices and fondly remembering his mom.

A woman shared that she was only 17 months old when her mother died. Her father remarried. She values (珍视) the things learned from her stepmother (继母)—how to keep house, cook and care for children. “But it wasn’t a mother’s love,” she said. “If you have a mother and you’ve known a mother’s love, don’t take it for granted (把它视为当然).”

Asuccessful businessman was 9 years old when his mom took him out of school on his birthday. His driver said, “Why did he leave school?”

“My mom took me out to lunch for my birthday.” he said.

His driver said, “Your mom loves you like nobody else Don’t you ever forget that, OK?  And take care of your mom!”

Another person shared that when he immigrated (移民) to the US as a young man, his parents weren’t happy. He came anyway and landed in Fayetteville, Arkansas. He found a roommate, and every weekend they drove to the roommate’s home where his mother had food prepared and waited for them. They’d pick it up and have food for the week. The roommate’s mother became a stand-in mother with whom he has cherished (珍惜) a lifelong bond.

It is good to tell others what your mother, or someone who has helped fill that role, means to you. But if your mother is still living, it might also be good to tell her.

34.Why does the former policeman listen to operas on radio every Saturday?

A.Because he wants to learn the dialects that he doesn’t understand.

D.Because he likes to enjoy Italian voices and it reminds him of his mother.

35.What does the underlined sentence “Your mom loves you like nobody else” mean?

A.It is you that your mom loves most.    B.It is your mom who loves you most.

C.Your mom can’t love you any more.   D.Your mom loves nobody but you.

36.What does the underlined word “stand-in mother” mean?

A.A mother full of love.B.A mother living with him.

C.A person filling the role of mother.D.A person taking care of him.

37.What does the author advise us to do?

A.It is better for you to tell your mom how much she means to you.

B.We should share more stories about our moms if we can.

C.We should always share our feelings with our mother.

D.It is good to tell others what your mother is like.

参考答案

1.B

【详解】句意:我和布里安都不喜欢那本书。它很无聊。

考查主谓一致。“neither…nor…”表示“两者都不”,是否定的意思,因此空格处应该用表示肯定的谓语动词,排除C和D。“neither …nor …”

until直到;if如果;so that以便;although虽然。“把好消息告诉你爷爷”的目的是“分享我们的开心”,用so that引导目的状语从句。故选C。
