Jane was not a confident girl before, because she was fat and others often laughed at her. As a result, Jane became very shy. She was afraid to say hello to strangers. She was afraid to ask simple questions and speak loud in front of others. It seemed that she felt afraid of everything in her life. She used to believe that she would be like this all her life.

But one day, her friend Paul’s words changed her mind. He encouraged Jane to change herself. He said, “If you can give it a try, you will have a chance to make a change. But if you never try, your life is only going to get worse.” Jane was deeply touched by what Paul said. She thought, “Why not have a try? After all, I had nothing to lose.”

The first thing Jane did was losing weight. She had a strict diet and did exercise every day. After 6 months, she lost 90 pounds. This taught her that she could change herself.

Tom didn’t like Sundays. He had to wear shoes and go to Sunday school. He had to do homework, and it was boring. Mary tried to help him, but it was difficult. He wanted to do his homework because then he would get a blue ticket. If you had ten blue tickets, you could get a red one. If you had ten red tickets, you could get a yellow one. If you had ten yellow tickets, you could get a new book.

Tom had lots of tickets. He wasn’t very good at doing his homework, but he was good at trading. He gave Bill a piece of candy and a fishhook. Bill gave him a yellow ticket. He gave other boys some of the things he had from letting others paint the fence and got more tickets. Some were blue, some were red, and some were yellow. Finally, he had enough to get a new book.

That Sunday, the new girl came to Sunday school for the first time. Her parents came too, and the children learned that her father was a very important judge. The girl’s name was Becky Thatcher. The Sunday school teacher wanted to show Judge Thatcher that it was a good class. He asked if any of the boys or girls had enough tickets for a new book. Everybody was very surprised when Tom stood up. The Sunday school teacher was more surprised than anybody else. He counted the tickets. There were enough for a new book. He gave Tom the book, and Tom was allowed to sit with the important new people. Judge Thatcher said hello, but Tom could not speak. He was too nervous and thinking about Becky.

“What’s your name?” asked the judge.

One night, John came into the stable, calling, “Wake up. Beauty!”

“John,” he said, “Mrs Gordon is very ill. Ride to the doctor’s and give him this note.”

“Now, Beauty, do your best.” said John. I went as fast as possible. When we arrived at Dr White’s house, John told him: “Mrs Gordon is very ill. Squire Gordon thinks she is going to die Please go to her immediately.” “Yes,” said the doctor, “but my son has my horse. Can I have yours?” he asked.

Then he gave me cold water to drink. Soon all my body began to shake, and I felt very cold. A long time later John came back. He covered me with two or three warm blankets, and ran to the house for some hot water. He gave me some warm food, and then I think I went to sleep.

Over and over again, John said to himself: “Stupid boy! Stupid boy!”

Can you imagine an AI chatbot (聊天机器人) competing with you in an examination? Do you think you could get higher scores than it? Developed by US company OpenAI, ChatGPT has taken the Internet by storm, winning 100 million users since it came out in November 2022. People can ask the robot to write stories and emails, translate languages, and answer all kinds of questions.

On a bright March afternoon, some travelers moved through the snow along Bearskin Lake. There were three dads and four teens. The teens, 14 to 16 years old, chatted and laughed. They each were pulling a sled(雪橇)which was full of winter camping gear(用具). Their dads—Bob Feyen, Jesse Schomberg and Kevin Skwira-Brown—also pulled gear.

Even when they were young, the children did their share. “The rules, from the beginning, were that everyone has to pull a sled.” Kevin Skwira-Brown said. “We want them to grow up strong.” In the early years, the children pulled small sleds with just sleeping bags. Now, they pull full-size sleds.

For 10 years now, these dads and sons/daughters have been making this journey each winter. “Bob, Kevin and I had done this one winter with our children.” Schomberg said. “The kids thought it was great fun, so we made it a tradition(传统).”

On this 32-degree March afternoon, the group was going to Daniels Lake. They would camp there for three days. They all stayed in Schomberg’s tent.

Hannah Feyen told a story about a trip when she was young. “We were walking across a stream one time, and I lost a boot in it. I shouted to dad for help. He just shouted back ‘You can do it!’ and I did.” laughed Hannah.
