Andrew doesn’t speak much Spanish, but he found communication wasn’t a problem, “You communicated with love,” according to an article on his university’s website. And what he gave out, he got back, “__4__” Andrew’s first time as a volunteer only lasted a week, but by the end of that week, he knew he’d be back soon—because he saw love and hope.

Kurt Vonnegut was an American writer who lived from 1922 to 2007.His work used dark comedy, as well as features of science fiction, to discuss the problems of life in the 20th century.  33   Don’t waste your readers’ time

34    Even a short story can take several hours to finish if you’re a slow reader.Don’t make your readers feel they would rather do something better with their time.

Every character should want something

The characters in your story should want things.   35    Think about your own life: everything you do is because of something you want.Sometimes these things are big, but most of the time they’re small things.  36

A writer shouldn’t try to write for every person who might read their work.Instead, imagine one person and think about what your writing can achieve for them. Before you put your pen on the paper, try to think, “Who am I writing this for?”Break the rules

Perhaps the most important advice Vonnegut has is that good writers don’t always follow the rules. If they did, most writing would be very boring.  37    You never know—it might just work!

A.Write for one person

B.Imagine your readers

C.Reading something can take a long time.

D.If they don’t, then their story cannot move forward.

E.He is best known for his novel Slaughterhouse-Five.

F.Here are some tips Vonnegut shared with new writers.

G.So don’t be afraid to try something new in your writing.

In sunny California, Craig Rogers was sitting on his surfboard, scanning the distance for his next wave.  31   He looked down and was scared to see a great white shark biting the front of his board.“I could have touched its eye with my hand,” says Rogers. The shark had surfaced so quietly that he didn’t hear a thing. In his horror and confusion(慌乱), he waved his arms and accidentally cut two of his fingers on the shark’s teeth.  32   Then, although Rogers being in the water with blood flowing from his fingers, the five-meter-long shark simply swam away.

33   Of these, one-third are said to be great white attacks.Great whites are often described as “man-eaters”—creatures that hunt and kill humans—but this is factually incorrect.  34   In fact, a person has a greater chance of being killed by lightning than by a great white.

One of the most common explanations for great white attacks is that great whites don’t see well.It is thought that they often mistake a person for a seal or a sea lion—a very attractive snack. Some other shark researchers believe that great whites “attack” because they are actually curious animals that like to study things. They believe that it’s possible great whites use their bite not just to kill and eat, but also to gather information.  35  Even though such experiences are unlucky for people like Craig Rogers, perhaps when sharks bite surfboards, other objects, or even people, they are just trying to learn what they are.

A.Suddenly, the board stopped moving.

B.Great whites seldom kill their human victims.

C.More than 100 shark attacks happen worldwide each year.

D.He got off the opposite side of his surfboard, into the water.

E.He managed to balance himself on the board for quite a moment.

F.Another explanation for the attacks comes from sharks’ competitive nature.

G.According to this idea, when a great white realizes what it is biting, it simply lets go.

Li Meixi, 12, feels worried about her looks – not her face, but her clothes. When she sees fashionable people on the street, she tries to keep away from them.”  33  “said Li, from Chengdu, Sichuan.

What Li is experiencing is fashion anxiety(时尚焦虑).II’s been a hot topic online recently.  34 They are afraid of being seen as out of style.

A big reason that leads to fashion anxiety is fashion bullying (霸凌).Fashion magazines and advertisements sell the “latest and greatest’.trends(趋势) by telling us what to wear. They have made us care more about how we look. 35

Also, fashion anxiety comes because we are not confident enough. 36  This can make us

doubt or even dislike ourselves. The fact is that those people usually don’t notice us at all.

37   Instead of following them, the key is to find your own style. If you’re able to wear something with confidence, you will be the one starting a trend.More importantly, what you wear just shows what you look like, not who you are. What also matters is your personality and abilities.

A.I am afraid that they think I’m out of style.

B.People have the right to choose what to wear.

C.Fashion trends come and go, always changing.

D.No matter what we wear, keeping it clean is enough.

E.If we don’t follow the trends, we seem to fall behind.

F.These days, many people feel worried about their clothes.

G.We care too much about how fashionable people look at us.
