There were doors all around the hall, but they were all locked (锁上). Alice walked sadly down the middle, wondering how she got out again.
Suddenly, she came upon a little three-legged table. There was nothing on it but a tiny (极小的) golden key, and Alice’s first idea was that this might belong to one of the doors of the hall.
But, alas! Either the locks were too large, or the key was too small. However, on the second time round, she came upon a low curtain (帘子) she had not noticed before and behind it was a little door. She tried the little golden key in the lock, and she was pleased to find it fitted!

Once, a circle (圆环) broke. It missed a small part of itself. The circle wanted to be whole, so it went around and looked for its missing piece. But, because it wasn’t complete, it could roll (滚动) only very slowly. It smelled the flowers along the way. It talked with the worms (虫子). It enjoyed the sunshine. It found lots of different parts, but none of them fit. It left them all by the side of the road and kept on searching.
One day, the circle found a perfect piece. It was so happy. It could be whole, with nothing missing. It fixed itself and began to roll. Now that it was a perfect circle, it could roll very fast, but too fast to notice the flowers or to talk to the worms. The circle missed the flowers and the worms. It left its perfect piece by the side of the road and rolled slowly away.

There’s a story about the California gold rush (淘金热) that tells of two brothers who sold all they had and went prospecting(勘探)for gold. They discovered a vein of gold(矿石脉), bought it, and continued to get down to the serious business of getting the gold out of the mine. All they hoped was to make lots of money and change their lives.
All went well at first, but then a strange thing happened. The vein of gold disappeared! They tried hard but they couldn’t find any gold.
Finally, they gave up sadly. They sold their tools and rights to dig the mine(矿山)for a few hundred dollars, and took the train back home. Later a man named Tim who bought the gold mine ordered an engineer to examine(检查)the mine carefully. The engineer advised him to continue digging in the same place where the two brothers had left off. To his surprise, the new owner found gold at three feet deeper of the same place. With a little more patience, the two brothers would have been millionaires themselves.
It is also true for us. Sometimes we can’t make it just because we are not patient enough. As a result, even though we are so close to success, we just missed the opportunity. Do you need to dig three feet farther in your life?

参考答案
一、单项选择
1.C
【详解】句意:——看这位演员在舞台上倒立着弹吉他。是吉姆吗? ——一定是他。他告诉过我他会给我们惊喜。
考查情态动词表推测。mustn’t禁止,不得;can’t不可能,不会;must一定;may也许。根据“He told me he would surprise us.”可知,吉姆曾说过他会这样做,所以表演者就是吉姆的可能性是非常大的。故选C。
2.C
【详解】句意:有些人认为,如果他们有问题,他们可能会保守秘密。
考查连词辨析。though尽管;so所以;if如果;until直到。根据“Some people think they may keep them to themselves…they have problems.”可知前后是条件关系,表示“如果有问题,可能会保守秘密”,故选C。
