China is a country having the largest population in the world, with more than 1.4 billion people. However, it’s shown that China’s birth rate (率) is dropping. Although the government has tried to encourage people to have more children, China’s birth rate in 2021 was the lowest since 1949.

According to the National Bureau of Statistics (国家统计局) of China, 10.62 million babies were born in 2021, a birth rate of 7.52 per 1000 people. This is down from a rate of 8.52 per 1,000 people in 2020. The 2021 birth rate is also almost equal to the year’s death rate; 10.14 million deaths were recorded, a rate of 7.18 per 1000.

This means the natural growth rate of the population was just 0.34 per 1,000 people. It is the lowest since China’s Great Famine (饥荒) from 1959 to 1961 which killed about 30 million people and caused a population decline

Ning Jizhe of the National Bureau of Statistics told state media some of the reasons for the decline in birth are that people’s opinions about having children have changed, birth rates are dropping, and young people are taking longer to get married. Also, the high cost of living in cities is discouraging couples from having more children.

Another problem is that the population is aging faster than expected. China’s working age population is already dropping, which will put stress on the country’s ability to pay and care for an increasingly elderly country. This suggests China’s total population may have reached its peak (顶点) in 2021. It also shows China’s population growth is likely slowing faster than expected.

To increase birth rates, the Chinese government ended its “one child” rule in 2016. In 2021, couples would be allowed to have up to three children.

34.What was China’s birth rate in 2020?

A. 7.52 per 1000 people.                          B. 8.52 per 1000 people.

C. 7.18 per 1000 people.                           D. 0.34 per 1000 people.

35. What does the underlined word “decline” in paragraph 3 probably mean?

A. Change.             B. Fall.                         C. Rise.                 D. Level.

36. Which may be a reason for China’s dropping birth rate according to Ning Jizhe?

A. The cost of living in cities is high.

B. Young people no longer get married.

C. Having children changes people’s ideas.

D. There are too many old people to care for.

37. Which of the following can solve the problem with birth rate?

A. Keep carrying out the “one-child” rule.

B. Slow down the population aging process.

C. Encourage couples to have more children.

D. Increase China’s working-age population.

We usually understand when someone speaks or writes to us, and many gestures have meanings, too. But few of us ever considered what and how we eat as a way of communication. The food people eat during celebrations and ceremonies (仪式) can symbolize (象征) many things. In many cultures, people share food at meal times. Sharing bread or other foods is a common human tradition that can improve trust. Food can also have a particular (特别的) meaning, and play an important role in a family or culture’s celebrations or traditions. The foods we eat —- and when and how we eat them —- are often unique to a particular culture, or may even differ between the country and the city in one country.

In most cultures, bread represents nourishment (营养). It is also one of the most commonly shared foods in the world. Sharing bread whether at a special time or at the family dinner table, is a common symbol of companionship and togetherness. In fact, the word “companion” comes from the Latin com (together) and panis (bread). Many cultures also celebrate birthdays and marriages with beautifully decorated cakes that are cut an shared among the guests. Early types of cakes were simply a kind of bread, so this tradition has its root (根源) in the custom of sharing bread.

Food also plays an important role in many New Year celebrations. In the southern United States, piece of cornbread represent blocks of gold for prosperity (繁荣) in the new year. In Greece, people share a special cake called vasilopita. A coin is baked into the cake, which represents success in the New Year for the person who receives it. Most of the foods eaten during the Chinese New Year have symbolic meanings. Sometimes this is based on their shape: for example, long noodles symbolize long life. The symbolism can also be based on the sound of the word in Chinese. For example, people give out oranges because the word for “orange” sounds like the word for “good luck”.

42.Which of the following is NOT commonly considered as a way of communication?

A.Eating moon cakes at the Mid-autumn Festival.

B.Writing emails to your teacher.

C.Talking to your grandparents.

D.Shaking hands with someone when you first meet.

43.______________ can help improve trust among people according to the article.

A. Eating bread with family members                   B. Having lunch together

C. Sharing a pizza with friends                                    D. Cutting a cake into pieces

44. What is the root reason for sharing cakes at birthdays?

A. Birthday cakes are usually too big for one person to eat.

B. Cakes are a kind of beautiful and delicious dessert.

C. Cakes and bread have been the same food for many years.

D. Sharing cakes has got its tradition from sharing bread.

45. ______________ represent success for the new year in its own culture.

A. Coins in vasilopita          B. Oranges     C. Pieces of cornbread     D. Noodles

46. Which of the following is the best title for this article?

A. The importance of different foods                            B. The way of eating foods

C. What we eat really matters                               D. Another way of communication

Australia, the last continent (大洲) was discovered (发现) by ships from some European nations in the seventeenth century. These nations were less interested in changing it into a colony (殖民地) than in exploring it. As in the early history of the United States, it was the English who set up the colony in Australia. The history and the geography of these two British colonies have some other things in common (共同的) as well.

Australia and the United States are about the same in size, and their western lands are both not rich in soil. It was on the eastern coast of Australia and America that the English first settled, and both colonies soon began to develop towards the west. However, this westward movement took place more because the English were searching for better land than because the population was increasing. The newly colonized western part of both countries developed quickly after gold was discovered in America in 1849 and in Australia two years later.

Although the development of these two countries has a lot in common, there are some great differences as well. The United States gained its independence from England by revolution (革命) while Australia won its independence without having to go to war. Australia, unlike the United States, was firstly turned into a colony for English prisoners and its economic development was in wheat growing and sheep raising. By 1922, for example, Australia had fifteen times more sheep than it had people, or almost half as many sheep as there are people today in the United States. Yet, although there are these and other main differences, Australia and the United States have more in common with each other than either one has with most of the rest of the world.

47. Who turned Australia into a colony?

A. Britain                                      B. Several European countries

C. The United States of America      D. None of the above

48. In the early history of America and Australia, both colonies developed towards the west mainly for the reason that ______________.

A. gold was discovered there    B. the population was increasing rapidly in the east

C. fewer people lived there              D. the English thought there might be richer land there

49. In the early 1920s, ______________.

A. the population (人口) in Australia was greater than that of the United States

B. there were more sheep in Australia than in the United States

C. Australia had one fifteenth as many people as sheep

D. the United States had twice as many sheep as people

50. Australia, unlike the United States, ______________.

A. won its independence by peaceful means

B. did not discover gold until the late 1840s

C. was the last and biggest continent to be discovered

D. was not rich in gold in its western part
