Kurzweil is an inventor with some interesting ideas on how humans will soon be able to live much longer than the average(平均)78 years they do now.

The first challenge is how to stop our bodies from getting old and dying. Kurzweil doesn’t see this as a problem. With gene technology we’ll soon be able to “turn off” genes that cause ageing and disease.

This technology is getting cheaper and better. Kurzweil believes that from 2022, we’ll be adding more than a year to the average life.

Of course, if we’re all going to live longer, then there are going to be more of us on this already overcrowded(过度拥挤的) Earth. Many people think there are likely to be problems with resources such as food and energy. Kurzweil doesn’t agree. He says that the same technologies used to increase (提升) our lifetime will also be used to help with food production and energy needs. For example, he says, sunlight can give us 10, 000 times more energy than we really use now. We just need to develop the technology to make better use of it and make it cheaper. There are also new technologies that can recycle water cheaply. This means that dirty water can be made clean again at a very low cost. When you think that 80% of disease in the developing world is because of dirty water, you can see how this technology might help change the world.

But what are we going to do with all this extra time? Won’t we all get bored? Again Kurzweil says “no”. For a start, we won’t be stuck in old bodies. We’ll stay young for years. This will mean we’ll be able to try many more things than we can now.

The future according to Ray Kurzweil looks good—and we might just be around to see it.

25. What is Ray Kurzweil’s main idea about the future?

A. We can find more ways to have fun.                    B. We can live much longer than before.

C. We can buy food and drinks cheaply.                   D. We can live in a good environment.

26. How long may we live in 2050, according to the passage?

A. 210.                        B. 78.                          C. 106.                        D. 128.

27. What is Kurzweil’s plan to solve the problems with resources?

A. People should save energy as possible.                 B. People will get clean water from the sea.

C. People will pay a lot to get more sunlight.            D. People can develop technology to help.

28. From what kind of book can we most likely find this passage?

A. A science book.        B. A language book.      C. A romantic novel.     D. A science fiction.

D

Fizza was standing in the middle of a field. Cloudy was on one side of her and Golden was on the other.

Nervously, Fizza held onto Cloudy’s leather straps (缰绳) and kicked her leg high in the air. Unluckily, at that moment, Cloudy moved and Fizza fell to the ground. Fletcher laughed and laughed. It looked like he was going to fall off his horse.

“Here, let me help you,” he said, putting out his hand to help her get up.

“I can’t stop!”she cried out. “I can’t stop!”

Quickly, Fletcher came after her, took Cloudy’s straps and stopped her. He could see that she was crying.

A group of islands in the South Pacific is in danger of disappearing. Tuvalu will soon become the first country which is not suitable for people to live because of weather change and rising sea levels. Tuvalu is about 1, 050 kilometers north of its nearest neighbour Fiji. Its name means “eight standing together”, but in fact it is nine islands.

This tiny country is the fourth smallest in the world, after Monaco, the Vatican and Nauru.

In the summer, there are lots of hurricanes(飓风) and rough seasons. These hurricanes have recently become more and have begun to hurt life and pull down buildings and houses. They have also killed the fish in the seas around the island. This is very serious because the fish are an important source of food for the people.

Rising sea levels, caused by global warming, have increased the level of salt in the ground water. This water is the only source of fresh water for people and farm animals.

Of course Tuvalu’s greenhouse gases(温室气体) is not much because it’s such a small country but the Tuvalu government has begun a programme to deal with its own greenhouse gases. But this will not change the situation, and at last, the Tuvaluans will have to leave their islands.

New Zealand has agreed to take in 75 people per year, but there are 9, 000 people living in Tuvalu at the moment. So where will the people of Tuvalu go?

58. Where is Tuvalu?

__________________________________

59. Why should people in Tuvalu leave their islands?

60. How do people in Tuvalu feel?
