Honestly, I had never enjoyed reading science movies until a friend of mine handed a copy of The Three-Body Problem into my hands. “You’ve just got to read this novel!”

“But I have no interest in superheroes fighting aliens to save the world. I prefer real people dealing with real-life situations.”

“Exactly. That’s why I want you to read it”

But, he was right. I fell in love with the book from the very beginning and finished it in only a couple of days. One reason why it was such a page-turner was Liu Cixin’s wonderful story-telling style. I especially liked his way of dealing with time.It starts back in history, nearly 60 years ago. Then, it jumps forward 40 years, when the characters have become elderly men and women, before jumping back again.

And the lives of Ye Wenjie and Wang Miao certainly kept me turning the pages. However, I also fell in love with this book because it was thought-provoking (发人深省的). Yes, there are aliens in it, but the theme of this story is life on Earth and how we humans are making the planet in danger. Real-world science, history and philosophy (哲学) are made into this very attractive story.

The Three-Body Problem has enjoyed great popularity worldwide. It’s no surprise then, that it has been adapted (改编) into a TV series. At first, I didn’t like this idea. Books often lose a lot of their value when they are made into TV series. Books are slow. You need patience to understand what is going on. TV moves much faster. It is packed with action and cool characters. Young people are often more interested in what they see on their screens than in the stories and their messages. But once you do fall in love with reading, you will realize that it is a good book, not a TV series that will be your friend for life.

1.What can we learn from the first paragraph?

A.The writer wasn’t interested in science movies.

B.The writer’s friend wrote the sci-fi novel.

C.The writer has little interest in reading at all.

2.What questions can’t be answered in this passage?

A.Why do we humans cause the planet to be in danger?

B.What’s the theme of this story?

C.What kept me reading?

3.In which sentence should the word page-turner be put?

A.Amy thought the trip to Shanghai sounded like a ________.

B.The professor in my college always tells me in our learning experience that we need a ________.

C.People praised the movie was such a ________ that almost everyone loved it.

4.Which one is NOT the reason why the writer loves the novel?

A.The wonderful story-telling way.

B.The lives of Ye Wenjie and Wang Miao.

C.The TV series adapted from it.

5.What can we infer from the writer’s opinion?

A.A good book can make TV series more valuable.

B.There’s no need to adapt good books into TV series.

C.Young people should first watch the TV series instead of the book itself.

Tune(曲调): Pride of Fishermen

When autumn comes to the frontier, the scene(风景)looks drear,

South-bound wild geese won’t stay

E’en for a day.

An uproar rises with horns blowing far and near.

Walled in by peaks, smoke rises straight

At sunset over isolate town with fastened gate.

I hold a cup of wine, yet home is far  ▲ ,

The Northwest is not won and I’m obliged to stay.

At the flutes’ doleful sound

Over frost-covered ground,

None fall asleep,

The general’s hair turns white and soldiers weep.

Fan Zhongyan (989-1052) was famous for his work Notes on the Yueyang Tower. Its line “To be the first in the country to worry about the affairs of the state and the last to enjoy oneself is often used.Fan was not just a ci composer(词人), but also a famous statesman(政治家).

In the early Song Dynasty(960-1279), ci composers usually wrote about love and court(宫廷)life. But Fan Zhongyan’s ci included different topics. He focused on the life of soldiers. Pride of Fishermen is a good example.

Based on the writer’s own experience, this ci shows the hard life soldiers had and their homesickness(思乡). At the time, Fan led an army to fight against the Western Xia, which was to the northwest of Song. As he grew up in Suzhou, much farther south, he couldn’t get used to the weather. That’s why the first line of the piece uses the word “drear”. The following lines in the first part describe more about the hardship. For example, the isolated town was in great danger. The second part shows how much Fan and the soldiers missed home.

However, the ci doesn’t only focus on homesickness. Instead, it mixes both patriotic(爱国的)love with homesickness, creating a sad but real poetic atmosphere(氛围).

9.What is the Chinese for the tune of this ci?

A.摸鱼儿             B.渔父                      C.渔家傲                   D.渔歌子

10.The suitable word which can be put in the seventh line ()of this ci is ________.

A.near                 B.straight                  C.way                       D.away

11.Why did Fan Zhongyan use the word “drear” in the first line of the piece?

A.He hated to stay in the northwest of Song.

B.He couldn’t bear the hardship of being a soldier, so he didn’t like the scene.

C.The weather in the northwest was so different from his hometown, so he felt sad.

D.He thought things in the northwest were not good.

12.From this ci, we know Fan Zhongyan ________.

A.was good at fighting and guiding.         B.owned deep feeling for soldiers and homeland

C.played an important role in Song’s history     D.was a great ci composer and a famous statesman

13.What’s the main idea of the piece?

A.The hard life and the patriotic love of soldiers.      B.The anger to the enemy and the war.

C.Sadness and disappointment to the emperor.   D.Deeply missing families and hometown.

China has a long history, and many stories are hidden in ancient books, such as Shan Hai Jing, or Classic of Mountains and Seas. It is a fantastic geographical and cultural record of the pre-Qin China as well as a collection of Chinese mythology(神话).

The exact writer of the book and the time it was written are still uncertain. It was once thought that mythical characters such as Yu the Great or Boyi wrote the book. However, the general agreement among modern scholars(学者) is that the book was not written at a single time by a single writer, but rather by numerous people from the period of the Warring States to the beginning of the Han dynasty.

All in all, Shan Hai Jing talks about more than 550 mountains, 300 waterways and 400 mythical creatures. It is made up of 31,000 Chinese characters more or less. The whole collection is divided into 18 parts. Myths such as the Great Pangu, Nuwa, and Kua Fu are included in the book. These are stories of creation and the beginning of mankind. These stories are now being spread from one generation(代) to another in China.

There is nothing more attractive in Shan Hai Jing than the mysterious monsters(妖怪) described in it. For example, there is a kind of wild animal in Qingqiu Mountain. It looks like a fox but has nine tails. Its cry is similar to the cry of a baby. If you eat its meat, you will not be harmed by bad spirits. These monsters give readers a look at the ancients’ understanding and imagination of some unknown things.

As a record of ancient Chinese mythology, Shan Hai Jing is undoubtedly attractive. It is an encyclopedia(百科全书) that can show ancient social life.

14.According to the passage, Shan Hai Jing ________.

A.was set up by Pangu and Nuwa             B.was written by Yu the Great and Boyi

C.provides information about the ancients D.has a long history of about 1500 years

15.Which aspects(方面) does Shan Hai Jing cover?

① Geography       ② Outer Space      ③ Physics      ④ Chemistry       ⑤ History

A.① ② ③         B.② ③ ④               C.① ④ ⑤               D.① ② ⑤

16.What does the writer think of Shan Hai Jing?

A.Strange and meaningless.                     B.Unbelievable but knowledgeable.
