①RVs (旅行房车) are a great way to tour the country and see the sights, but thanks to one father-daughter team, they’ve helped people who’ve lost their homes in California’s latest wildfires.

②The idea of Woody Faircloth, EmergencyRV Organization connects people who are willing to donate their RVs to those in need. So far, Faircloth with his daughter Luna along for the ride — has sent 95 RVs to California area wildfire victims (受害者). Otherwise they might wait months for emergency housing (应急居所).

③Faircloth first got the idea for the organization in 2018. Like many that year, the father was touched by the news of California’s deadly Camp Fire that burnt hundreds of homes during Thanksgiving week. The story of a man who lost almost everything but managed to survive the fire in his mobile home impressed Faircloth. Then he asked Luna what she thought about finding an RV and sending it to a family, so they could have a place to call home for Christmas, and she was 100% on board.

④Faircloth started a GoFundMe activity to provide money for the first RV that he and Luna sent to California. As the news of their journey spread, people started reaching out to him, offering to donate their RVs — and from there, EmergencyRV Organization soon formed. All the people think what Faircloth did will make a difference to those in need. It’s hoped that these donations can help more people.

⑤Many of those who receive mobile homes are firefighters. Their tireless work in fighting the fire did not prevent their own homes from burning. One such man is George Wolley who lost his own home in the Dixie Fire on August 4th. He said, “Before I got that RV, I felt like I was a burden (负担) on everybody that helped me... I slept a lot in tents and in my car. It gave me a place to go.”

⑥Faircloth’s organization continues to grow. He’s thankful for the many things he has and happy to be in a position to help others.

41. EmergencyRV Organization was started to ________.

A. teach people ways to prevent fires                          B. raise money to buy emergency cars

C. provide housing for wildfire victims                      D. collect and sell second-hand cars

42. What gave Faircloth the idea to set up the organization?

A. His interview with a man surviving a fire.            B. The news about a terrible fire.

C. His own experience of a wildfire.                        D. Donations from people to victims.

43. How did people feel about Faircloth’s behaviour?

A Angry.                       B. Excited.                   C. Worried.                  D. Hopeful.

44. Why was Wolley mentioned (提及) in the text?

A. To explain the danger of wildfires.                      B. To introduce the work of firefighters.

C. To show the burden on car owners.                      D. To give an example of RVs’ receiver.

45. What’s the proper structure (结构) for the passage? (① — Paragraph 1, ② — Paragraph 2...)

Understanding Graphics(图表)

When we are reading, we often see one or two graphics in a text. Have you ever thought about these questions: Why are they there? What information do they give? Do they help with our reading and understanding?

Graphics are things like pictures, maps, charts and tables. They give information to readers. Very often, we can see different kinds of graphics in books, magazines and newspapers. Writers use graphics to attract (吸引) the readers and give them some special information. Graphics help to understand the given information in a text. It is not always true that a picture means more than a thousand words. But many things are easier to show than to tell and they may also be easier to understand. Graphics are just the right things that give a lot of information but it doesn’t take much time to read and understand.

The right way to read and understand a graphic is to look at the picture and the words together. In a graphic, only a few words are used to explain what the picture shows you. Sometimes, numbers and percentages (百分比) are also given to go well with the words to explain things.

Now look at the graphic on the right. It is how a writer used a graphic to show the number of hours spent sleeping by British teenagers each day. Can you understand it?

across穿过(表面);through穿过(内部);out外面;against碰撞。beat against the window表示“敲打窗户”。故选D。
